Incentives, Swoopes, Pink Lockers, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

While I was on the road much of the last two weeks a number of things happened that caught my attention and now that I am back at my desk I would like to discuss a few of them. First, and indeed most curious, was the announcement from the NCAA that they would be offering financial rewards to those institutions whose student athletes actually perform as students. What a concept!

The Demise Of African American Participation In Baseball: A Cultural Backlash From The Negro Leagues, David C. Ogden Nov 2005

The Demise Of African American Participation In Baseball: A Cultural Backlash From The Negro Leagues, David C. Ogden

Communication Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Sixty years ago baseball was a major business and cultural force for African Americans. But the end of the Negro Leagues and the desegregation of baseball heralded a new era that marked the beginning of a cultural drift between baseball and African Americans. This paper will explore the social factors embedded in the Negro Leagues that gave baseball cultural relevance for African Americans and what is impeding those factors from operating again.

Modeling Fuzzy Rules With Description Logics, Sudhir Agarwal, Pascal Hitzler Nov 2005

Modeling Fuzzy Rules With Description Logics, Sudhir Agarwal, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

In real application scenarios, input data and knowledge is often vague. Likewise, it is often the case that exact reasoning over data is impossible due to complex dependencies between input data and target outputs. For practical applications, however, good approximations often suffice, and efficient calculation of an approximate answer is often preferable over complex processing which may take a long time to come up with an exact answer. Fuzzy logic supports both features by providing fuzzy membership functions and fuzzy IF-THEN rule bases. In this paper, we show how fuzzy membership functions and fuzzy rules can be modeled by means …

Bloggers Beware: The Five Commandments For Bloggers, Warren B. Chik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There is a need for Singapore bloggers to be aware of legal issues arising from their online diaries, particularly in the light of the recent cases involving seditious remarks made online by bloggers that resulted in jail terms and fines; and earlier in the year, a dispute arose over allegedly defamatory speeches made by a blogger about A*STAR’s Chairman, Philip Yeo, which was resolved amicably, but not without an apology. The threats of legal repercussions in the form of civil lawsuits and criminal charges serve as reminders of the potential legal problems that can arise from blogging, and indeed from …

Optimal Adaptation In Autonomic Web Processes With Inter-Service Dependencies, Kunal Verma, Prashant Doshi, Karthik Gomadam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present methods for optimally adapting Web processes to exogenous events while preserving inter-service dependencies. For example, in a supply chain process, orders placed by the manufacturer may get delayed in arriving. In response to this event, the manufacturer has the choice of either waiting out the delay or changing the supplier.

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Today your life could change dramatically.
• Your spouse or significant other decides life without you is better than life with you.
• Your child, your parent or perhaps even you discover a terminal illness has invaded your body.
• You lose your job where you've worked a minimum of 50 hours per week for the last five, 10. 15 or 20 years.
• You lose everything that is precious to you: your home, your possessions, your mementos. All you have left are your life and the clothes on your back.
Chances are any of the above scenarios would rock …

Research Note: International Issues In Media And Information Literacy, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

The emerging field of media and information literacy studies continues to be influenced by a wide range of interdisciplinary research. An inventory of current research on media and information literacy, using Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education (SIMILE) as a database, reveal emphases in studies about schools and education, library usage, mass media, intercultural communication, and global media. As individuals around the globe are empowered by their media and information literacy skills, it is possible that these abilities will be harnessed as cultural tools in the grassroots battles to maintain local and national identities.

Milk, Fashion, And The Love Boat, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 2005

Milk, Fashion, And The Love Boat, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It's difficult to know where to begin in this late October silly season that has produced some of the wackiest and best examples of self-righteousness by the people who claim to be 'leading' the major sports. Once again they have come forward to 'protect' our children from all sorts of evil forces loose in society.

Nl Or Al, Or What's The Difference?, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 2005

Nl Or Al, Or What's The Difference?, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The first two rounds of the playoffs have produced some amazing baseball, although once again I have been struck by the fact that FOX Sports, as did previous networks, continue to trot out inadequate and second rate announcers and analysts to present this high level of play and drama. With all of the excellent talent working major league baseball across the nation, one wonders how difficult it must be for the major networks to ignore the best and settle for second best, or at times even less.

Building Skills F2f – Using Chat Reference Techniques, Darcy C. Del Bosque, Kimberly Chapman Oct 2005

Building Skills F2f – Using Chat Reference Techniques, Darcy C. Del Bosque, Kimberly Chapman

Library Faculty Publications

The UTSA Library, like many organizations, has been experiencing a period of rapid growth and change. Even positive change can cause stress in departments, and one way to help employees deal with change, while still providing customer-oriented service, is to establish a regular forum for discussion that encourages departmental communication.

Training is an important aspect of employee development; however, the literature indicates that, in many organizations, training is often given little attention and relegated to the sidelines due to other demands on staff. With the hiring of new personnel, including a new Head of Reference and a Training Coordinator, the …
