Inter-Row Robot Navigation Using 1d Ranging Sensors, Tyler A. Troyer, Santosh Pitla, Ethan Nutter
Inter-Row Robot Navigation Using 1d Ranging Sensors, Tyler A. Troyer, Santosh Pitla, Ethan Nutter
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications
In this paper a fuzzy logic navigation controller for an inter-row agricultural robot is developed and evaluated in laboratory settings. The controller receives input from one-dimensional (1D) ranging sensors on the robotic platform, and operated on ten fuzzy rules for basic row-following behavior. The control system was implemented on basic hardware for proof of concept and operated on a commonly available microcontroller development platform and open source software libraries. The robot platform used for experimentation was a small tracked vehicle with differential steering control. Fuzzy inferencing and defuzzification, step response and cross track error were obtained from the test conducted …

Tractor Hydraulic Power Data Acquisition System, J. B.W. Roeber, Santosh Pitla, Michael F. Kocher, Joe D. Luck, Roger M. Hoy
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications
Tractor hydraulic power is used on a wide range of agricultural implements; however, the availability of operational hydraulic data at points other than full engine throttle position is limited. Operators could utilize this hydraulic data to maximize field efficiency and minimize machinery costs when determining suitable machinery for field operations. A field usable hydraulic test apparatus capable of measuring tractor hydraulic pressure and flow rate data was developed. The goal of this study was to determine if a hydraulic flow and pressure measurement device could be installed on the rear of a tractor to provide implement hydraulic power consumption at …

In-Field Fuel Use And Load States Of Agricultural Field Machinery, Santosh Pitla, Joe D. Luck, Jared Werner, Nannan Lin, Scott A. Shearer
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications
The ability to define in-field tractor load states offers the potential to better specify and characterize fuel consumption rate for various field operations. For the same field operation, the tractor experiences diverse load demands and corresponding fuel use rates as it maneuvers through straight passes, turns, suspended operation for adjustments, repair and maintenance, and biomass or other material transfer operations. It is challenging to determine the actual fuel rate and load states of agricultural machinery using force prediction models, and hence, some form of in-field data acquisition capability is required. Controller Area Networks (CAN) available on the current model tractors …
Groundwater Transit Time Distribution And Mean From Streambed Sampling In An Agricultural Coastal Plain Watershed, North Carolina, Usa, Troy E. Gilmore, David P. Genereux, D. Kip Solomon, John E. Solder
Groundwater Transit Time Distribution And Mean From Streambed Sampling In An Agricultural Coastal Plain Watershed, North Carolina, Usa, Troy E. Gilmore, David P. Genereux, D. Kip Solomon, John E. Solder
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications
We measured groundwater apparent age (s) and seepage rate (v) in a sandy streambed using point-scale sampling and seepage blankets (a novel seepage meter). We found very similar MTT estimates from streambed point sampling in a 58 m reach (29 years) and a 2.5 km reach (31 years). The TTD for groundwater discharging to the stream was best fit by a gamma distribution model and was very similar for streambed point sampling in both reaches. Between adjacent point-scale and seepage blanket samples, water from the seepage blankets was generally younger, largely because blanket samples contained a fraction of ‘‘young’’ stream …
Comparing Various Hardware/Software Solutions And Conversion Methods For Controller Area Network (Can) Bus Data Collection, Samuel E. Marx, Joe D. Luck, Santosh Pitla, Roger M. Hoy
Comparing Various Hardware/Software Solutions And Conversion Methods For Controller Area Network (Can) Bus Data Collection, Samuel E. Marx, Joe D. Luck, Santosh Pitla, Roger M. Hoy
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications
Various hardware and software solutions exist for collecting Controller Area Network (CAN) bus data. Digital data accuracy could vary based upon different data logging methods (e.g., hardware/software timing, processor timing, etc.). CAN bus data were collected from agricultural tractors using multiple data acquisition solutions to quantify differences among collection methods and demonstrate potential data accumulation rates. Two types of data were observed for this study. The first, CAN bus frame data, represents data collected for each line of hex data sent from an ECU. One issue with frame data is the resulting large file sizes, therefore a second logging format …
Removal Of Cattle Manure Constituents In Runoff From No-Till Cropland As Affected By Setback Distance, John E. Gilley, Aaron J. Sindelar, Brian L. Woodbury
Removal Of Cattle Manure Constituents In Runoff From No-Till Cropland As Affected By Setback Distance, John E. Gilley, Aaron J. Sindelar, Brian L. Woodbury
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications
Vegetative filter strips located at the bottom of a hillslope have been shown to substantially reduce nutrients and sediment in runoff. Cropland areas could serve a similar function. However, little scientifically derived information is available to help identify the setback distances required to effectively reduce the transport of contaminants in runoff. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of setback distance and runoff rate on the concentrations and mass transport rates of selected constituents following land application of beef cattle manure to a no-till cropland area. The study site had a residue cover of 8.84 Mg ha-1 …

Quantifying The Fate Of Agricultural Nitrogen In An Unconfined Aquifer: Stream-Based Observations At Three Measurement Scales, Troy E. Gilmore, David P. Genereux, D. Kip Solomon, John E. Solder, Briant A. Kimball, Helena Mitasova, Francois Birgand
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications
We compared three stream-based sampling methods to study the fate of nitrate in groundwater in a coastal plain watershed: point measurements beneath the streambed, seepage blankets (novel seepage-meter design), and reach mass-balance. The methods gave similar mean groundwater seepage rates into the stream (0.3–0.6 m/d) during two 3–4 day field campaigns despite an order of magnitude difference in stream discharge between the campaigns. At low flow, estimates of flowweighted mean nitrate concentrations in groundwater discharge ([NO-3 ]FWM) and nitrate flux from groundwater to the stream decreased with increasing degree of channel influence and measurement scale, i.e., …

This Dissertation presents a Multi-Objective Sustainable (MOS) model to integrate economic, social, and environmental sustainable objectives into TAM decision-making. The objective is to develop a holistic multi-objective asset management approach integrating environmental and social sustainability related performance measures with traditional indicators, such as asset condition and …
Single-Family Housing Construction Cost In The Greater Baton Rouge Area, Justin Pierce Estes
Single-Family Housing Construction Cost In The Greater Baton Rouge Area, Justin Pierce Estes
LSU Master's Theses
Most research focused on housing costs has noted a paucity of empirical cost data for residential construction, and researchers have suggested that collecting these data for individual metropolitan areas is ideal. The goal of this study is to obtain these data and compare them to national average sources to determine how well national data represent local costs. Data collection included obtaining prices from big box stores and through a survey of local Baton Rouge residential contractors for material, square foot and assembly costs for the major components of a house (i.e. foundation, wall, roof). From the material cost data evaluated, …

Silicone Hollow Fiber Membrane Bioreactors For Mixed Aerobic And Anaerobic Treatment Of Gas Phase Toluene And Trichloroethylene, Alexander Lee Korff
Masters Theses
"Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are common in effluent waste streams from many sectors of industry and low-cost emission control technologies have the potential to mitigate long-term impacts on the environment. Federal Regulations, such as the Clean Air Act and National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPS), as well as state regulations are imposing stricter requirements on point-source emissions, with an emphasis on toxic VOCs. Trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), which are toxic VOCs, have been used since the 1920's for a variety of industrial applications like: degreasing, paint and printing operations, as extraction solvents, and for cleaning and drying …
Assessing Downstream Stormwater Impacts For Urban Watershed Planning, Johanna Meyer Pavlowsky
Assessing Downstream Stormwater Impacts For Urban Watershed Planning, Johanna Meyer Pavlowsky
Masters Theses
"The urbanization of watersheds has caused debilitating effects to downstream aquatic ecosystems in catchments and streams. The implementation of green infrastructure (GI), such as permeable pavements and bioretention facilities, has been shown to alleviate these effects by both reducing runoff and mitigating pollutants; however, the implements are often not designed with a specific goal of water improvement. This study targets understanding a small, impaired urban watershed, and the benefits green infrastructure may have to provide environmental, social, and economic improvement to the watershed.
Portions of Rolla including much of the S&T campus drain into the impaired urban waterbody Frisco Lake, …
Evaluation Of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (Uhpc) In Joints Of Bridge Girders, Saipavan Rallabhandhi
Evaluation Of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (Uhpc) In Joints Of Bridge Girders, Saipavan Rallabhandhi
Masters Theses
"Joints are often considered as the weak link in a structure and often deterioration of the structure initiates from the joints. Joints transfer the stresses from super-structure to sub-structure and in this process are subjected to large transfer stresses. Not much attention is given to the design of joints as they are positioned in low moment regions and typically a 4 to 6 ksi (28 to 41 MPa) concrete is used to fill the joints. One of the solution to this problem is Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). In the recent past significant research has been done to use UHPC in …
Influence Of Mix Design Parameters On Dynamic Segregation Of Self-Consolidating Concrete And Consequences On Performance Of Precast Beams, Aida Margarita Ley Hernandez
Influence Of Mix Design Parameters On Dynamic Segregation Of Self-Consolidating Concrete And Consequences On Performance Of Precast Beams, Aida Margarita Ley Hernandez
Masters Theses
"Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) is more vulnerable to stability problems as a consequence of its high flowing ability compared to conventional vibrated concrete. Dynamic segregation refers to the tendency of the concrete constituents to separate from the suspended matrix, usually in horizontal direction while being cast into the formwork or due to an impact. Similarly to static segregation, dynamic segregation can affect the homogeneity of SCC. Therefore, it is highly essential to ensure a proper dynamic stability in order to enhance the uniformity of in-situ properties of pre-stressed beams.
In this research project, the effects of SCC mix design parameters are …

Impacts Of Water Sources On The Effectiveness Of Point-Of-Use Water Treatment, Robert Brophy
Impacts Of Water Sources On The Effectiveness Of Point-Of-Use Water Treatment, Robert Brophy
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Disinfection of drinking water provides a safe, reliable, and clean water supply and has been protecting public health successfully throughout the 20th century. However, factors such as deteriorating infrastructure, introduction of microbial pathogens, or disinfection byproducts create problems and reduce the effectiveness of a drinking water treatment plant. Every day the public is drinking known carcinogens that are regulated by the EPA and tested for quarterly by treatment plants. To combat rising costs involved with upgrading source water treatment, point-of-use treatment is a popular option that treats water as it leaves the distribution system instead of being treated before discharge. …
An Exploration Of Structural Timber Innovation, Simon Beskitt
An Exploration Of Structural Timber Innovation, Simon Beskitt
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In many undergraduate programs of study, civil and structural engineering students are exposed to introductory material regarding timber construction. The information received in the undergraduate experience typically consists of a brief summary of the basic mechanical properties of wood but does not significantly cover timber design. Much greater emphasis is placed on design practices involving steel and concrete, likely due to their prominence in contemporary building trends in civil engineering. While it is true that wood is one of the older materials in terms of its utilization in structural and architectural design, it is certainly not an antiquated choice. Wood …
Rubber Roads For The Rubber City: Testing The Suitability Of Rubberized Asphalt For Roads In Northeast Ohio, Jessica M. Fraser
Rubber Roads For The Rubber City: Testing The Suitability Of Rubberized Asphalt For Roads In Northeast Ohio, Jessica M. Fraser

This research paper explores the benefits of using rubberized asphalt concrete (RAC) versus normal asphalt concrete (NAC) and why it is environmentally important. New road construction and repair of roadways due to potholes are always occurring in Northeast Ohio. Recently, the city of Akron’s transportation budget has increased, which includes projects such as reconstructing asphalt and resurfacing pavements throughout the city of Akron. Using rubberized asphalt may improve the quality of our roads and reduce roadway degradation which will likely save cities money.
Using rubberized asphalt recycles old tires, which do not decompose, and creates a positive use for them …
The Effect Of Green Structures On Hydrology In Urban Areas Of Akron, Ohio, Brooke Hayes, Brian Long
The Effect Of Green Structures On Hydrology In Urban Areas Of Akron, Ohio, Brooke Hayes, Brian Long
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Stormwater runoff is a major environmental concern in dense urban areas. Runoff in these areas contributes to flooding as well as water quality problems in the streams, lakes, and reservoirs downstream. The Cuyahoga River is the receiving waterbody for the City of Akron’s stormwater runoff. Currently, combined sewer overflow (CSO) from the city's outdated sewer system is the overriding reason for poor water quality in the Cuyahoga River.
Implementation of green infrastructure is one way to mitigate problems associated with stormwater runoff from urban areas. In this study, hydrologic modeling of the Little Cuyahoga watershed was conducted to determine how …
Heterogeneous Thermal Effects On Structural-Grade Steel, Eric Wickersham
Heterogeneous Thermal Effects On Structural-Grade Steel, Eric Wickersham
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The AISC Steel Construction Manual covers structural steel design while at atmospheric and elevated temperatures. The manual does not, though, cover what happens to the steel after it has cooled from elevated temperatures. To fill in this knowledge gap, A36 steel was studied with respect to three main criteria: time, temperature, and cooling. Time was sub-divided into a standard burn (17-20min) and a prolonged burn (90min). Temperature was sub-divided into an average burn (600-800⁰F) and an extreme burn (>1200⁰F). To reach such temperatures, a forge was constructed and used during the burning process. Cooling was sub-divided into standard (air …

Below-Grade Structurla Flexibility Study For Seismic-Resistant, Self-Centering, Concentrically-Braced Frames, Derek A.J. Hauff
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Self-centering, concentrically braced frames (SC-CBFs) are seismic-resistant lateral-load resisting systems for buildings that increase the lateral drift capacity in comparison to conventional CBFs. Two different substructures were examined on a six-story and a ten-story building to see which below grade structure was more efficient and how the flexibility from the addition of a basement compares to previous research of SC-CBFs structures without basements.
The study was completed in phases: modeling of forces in SAP2000, sizing of structural members, coding of structure into the modeling program Open System for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (OpenSees), and comparison of the output data.
Substructure one …
Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria Community Analysis: Isco/Isb Coupled Remediation, Christopher K. Bartlett
Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria Community Analysis: Isco/Isb Coupled Remediation, Christopher K. Bartlett
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Improved techniques for remediating groundwater systems are required for the more than 500,000 contaminated sites in North America. Many of these sites are the legacy of historical industrial operations, inappropriate disposal practices and accidental releases. The most widely observed contaminant at many of these sites is petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs). Recently, remediation efforts that involve the sequential application of treatment technologies have gained widespread interest. One specific sequential technology application or treatment train employs the aggressive nature of a chemical oxidation followed by bioremediation for polishing. When persulfate is used as the chemical oxidant its natural degradation by-product is sulfate, an …
Addressing The Impact Of Gavins Point Dam On The Lowermost~1400 Kilometers Of The Missouri River, Gregory Leaphart
Addressing The Impact Of Gavins Point Dam On The Lowermost~1400 Kilometers Of The Missouri River, Gregory Leaphart
Theses and Dissertations
The Missouri River originates in the Rocky Mountains in western Montana and joins the Mississippi River near St. Louis, Missouri. Beginning in the early 1900s, engineering efforts, such as dam construction, channel narrowing, and river alignment, were performed for flood control, navigational purposes, to use of water for agricultural and industrial needs, to produce hydroelectric power and the impounded lakes for recreation. These projects permanently altered the flow and sediment transport regimes in the river and the exchange of sediment with the surrounding floodplain. We focus on the long term effects of dam construction and channel narrowing on approximately the …
