"The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the use of ultrasonic energy, pH adjustment, and addition of polyelectrolytes in dewatering coagulant sludges. Emphasis was placed on the effects of the ultrasonic power output level and period of conditioning, the chemical conditioning of the sludge, and the type and origin of the sludge. Dewatering is thought to be the most practical approach for reducing the volume of coagulant sludges and efforts are being made to improve their dewatering characteristics.

"The use of crushed waste glass as an aggregate in asphaltic concrete has been suggested as a means for re-using glass separated from municipal refuse. Laboratory studies and field installations have generally utilized clean glass obtained by hand sorting bottles from the other refuse and crushing them to produce a desired gradation. For this type of asphalt to be economical though, the glass fraction must be separated mechanically. For mechanically separated materials, the glass-rich fraction also contains such items as metal, bone, rubber and other non-glass materials.

"Different modifications and newer methods of treatment which utilize the basic trickling filter concepts, such as the Bio-Disc process, have been developed to increase the efficiency of wastewater treatment. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and evaluate a newer such method called the splash plate concept.
The splash-plate concept utilizes a series of circular plates mounted horizontally on a vertical axis. This allows the wastewater being treated to travel over one plate to the edge and splash down to the next lower plate and so on throughout the tower. "The anaerobic filter is essentially a plug-flow, packed-bed, column type reactor in which the anaerobic bacteria responsible for the waste stabilization are attached to the filter media. This process is a relatively new concept in waste treatment which has been used only in laboratory studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate anaerobic filter performance when used to treat an actual industrial waste under controlled conditions of flow rate, organic strength and temperature.

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the ability of water treatment processes, especially coagulation and chlorination, to remove trace organic materials from raw river water. Trace organic concentrations were determined using the Organics-Carbon Adsorbable (O-CA) technique, a miniaturized Carbon Adsorption Method (CAM).

"A non-trivial simulation model has been developed which combines driver and vehicle dynamics with the roadway into one system. The model was successfully simulated on a portion of an existing roadway with the dynamic response and performance of the simulator being subjectively realistic. By implementing the idea of the interaction of variables, a much more detailed and representative response is obtained as compared to previous models based solely upon a single-factor-effect approach. "The purpose of this investigation was to study the magnitude and distribution of sulfur dioxide in the air surrounding the smelter of Missouri Lead Operating Company (now AMAX Lead Company of Missouri) in southeast Missouri, and evaluate the inter-relationships between sulfur dioxide incidents, meteorological factors, and plant operations.
Field research was conducted employing two weather stations and three sulfur dioxide monitoring stations. The data obtained from strip charts at each station were recorded and analyzed manually as well as by UMR computer facilities. "The mining and milling effluents from the Buick Mine of the AMAX Lead Company of Missouri have produced undesirable algal growths in Strother Creek below their tailings pond. A field and laboratory study was performed to determine the characteristics of the mining and milling wastewaters, and to study the effects of heavy metals and nutrients on algal growths. "The feasibility of utilizing the thermal energy from an electric power plant to operate an activated sludge process at elevated temperatures (above 40°C) was assessed.
The practicality of using this heat was determined from a heat transfer analysis and the operation of the activated sludge process was evaluated from laboratory studies of a batch process treating domestic and synthetic sewage.
The tank size for a thermophilic activated sludge chamber could be reduced by 40 to 50% as compared to ambient temperatures. For thermophilic processes a temperature of 55°C is recommended because the transition phase between mesophiles and thermophiles is around …

"This study was undertaken to investigate factors governing the release of pollutants from sediments and subsequent effects on water quality. Studies were carried out to: 1) determine the characteristics of selected sediments; 2) determine the level of release of pollutants under batch and fill and draw conditions; 3) determine the effect of temperature and pH on release mechanisms; 4) determine the importance of microbial (uninhibited) release and physio-chemical (inhibited) release processes.

"The limited number of rest areas in the State of Missouri does create a major problem for the motorist travelling in this state.
The author became more aware of this problem from personal experience and decided to investigate it. For that he interviewed over one thousand motorists on the only rest area that is located on 1-44, near the city of Stanton. He also took traffic counts to determine the average daily traffic volumes of Highway 1-44 and of the rest area stated above.
