A Fresh Expression Of "And Are We Yet Alive?", George Hendricks, Kelli Taylor Jan 2019

A Fresh Expression Of "And Are We Yet Alive?", George Hendricks, Kelli Taylor

The Asbury Journal

The paper addresses the decline in membership and overall societal influence of The United Methodist Church. In response to these life-threatening developments, new forms of ministry are emerging within the church. Many of these new ministries are grouped under a program called "Fresh Expressions" which began in the Church of England and are effectively being implemented in American Methodism. Storefront churches are discussed, bi-vocational ministers are considered and the concept of the "Third Place" as a form of ministry is introduced. Three focused interviews are utilized to understand the need and necessity for changes in the way The United Methodist …

Reflections On The Institutional Church, Denis Fortin Jan 2019

Reflections On The Institutional Church, Denis Fortin

Faculty Publications

It should not come as a surprise to anyone anymore when we say that our denomination is a hierarchical institution. In an earlier article, I argued that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is a hybrid form of episcopalism similar to that of the Methodist Church in the United States. This represents a weakening of our Protestant heritage, meaning that Seventh-day Adventism is in dire need of a major realignment of its ecclesiology and ecclesial practices

Under The Stained-Glass Ceiling: The Ambiguous Position Of Ordained Women In Protestant America, Jesse Klitzke Jan 2019

Under The Stained-Glass Ceiling: The Ambiguous Position Of Ordained Women In Protestant America, Jesse Klitzke

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The ordination and pastorship of women in Protestant America is as ambiguous as it is rare. Due to the constitutional separation of church and state in the U.S, churches do not follow anti-discrimination laws, and can hire or reject women for employment at their own discretion. This thesis argues that this discretion has created a disconnect between the acceptance of female pastors that many Protestant denominations of Christianity advertise, compared to what actually comes to fruition for women who are ordained within these denominations. This thesis will ultimately present the adverse reality of being an ordained Protestant woman in America …

Training Friends And Overseas Relief: The Friends Ambulance Unit And The Friends Relief Service, 1939 To 1948, Nerissa Kalee Aksamit Jan 2019

Training Friends And Overseas Relief: The Friends Ambulance Unit And The Friends Relief Service, 1939 To 1948, Nerissa Kalee Aksamit

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This transnational case study investigates the establishment and development of training programs by two British faith-based voluntary relief organizations, the Friends Ambulance Unit (FAU) and the Friends Relief Service (FRS), during the Second World War and explores the implementation of learned skills by members of those organizations working during the immediate postwar period in the British Occupation Zone in Germany. It contributes new perspectives to scholarship on humanitarianism as it highlights both the continuities and ruptures in the approaches to and practices of humanitarian aid. It identifies the Quaker traditions that shaped the work of the FAU and FRS—particularly the …

Equipping The Congregation Of East Belmont Baptist Church In Belmont, North Carolina For Outreach Through The Development And Implementation Of An Active Prayer Ministry, Jeff Dean Taylor Jan 2019

Equipping The Congregation Of East Belmont Baptist Church In Belmont, North Carolina For Outreach Through The Development And Implementation Of An Active Prayer Ministry, Jeff Dean Taylor

Doctor of Ministry Projects

In a local congregation, joining the spiritual practice of prayer with the ministry of outreach provides the church with an effective ministry tool to connect the congregation to its community and beyond. The East Belmont Baptist Church searches for effective ways to carry out the mission of making Christ known to others by equipping themselves through study and sermons to use prayer as a ministry in the community. Through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, congregational members meet people where they are and minister to them through intercessory prayer.
