Metal ions play an essential role in the functioning of all biological systems. They interact with charged and polar groups of all biopolymers. The study of structural and functional properties of metal binding proteins is an important area of modern physical and chemical biology. Metal cations and metal binding proteins are involved in all crucial cellular activities. Many pathological conditions are correlated with abnormal metal metabolism. Encyclopedia of Metalloproteins is a key resource that provides basic, accessible, and comprehensible information about this expanding field.

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Wojciech Budzianowski
This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.
Breaking The Theft-Chain-Cycle: Property Marking As A Defensive Tool, William J. Bailey, David J. Brooks
Breaking The Theft-Chain-Cycle: Property Marking As A Defensive Tool, William J. Bailey, David J. Brooks
Bill Bailey
The theft of property and its associated impact effects many parts of society. For example, a considerable amount of resources are expended in trying to reduce property theft, as such crime engenders both a financial and emotional impact (Grabosky, 1995, p. 1) on those involved. Factors such as fear of crime, increased insurance premiums and victimization are all outcomes of property crime. Much of the past research has focused on the mitigation of such crimes, collectively termed as ‘crime prevention’. Crime prevention are “any actions designed to reduce the actual level of crime and/or the perceived crime” (S.P. Lab, 2010, …
Singlet Excited States Of Anions With Higher Main Group Elements, Ryan C. Fortenberry
Singlet Excited States Of Anions With Higher Main Group Elements, Ryan C. Fortenberry
Ryan C. Fortenberry
Previous studies have shown that dipole-bound excited states exist for certain small anions. However, valence excited states have been reported for some closed-shell anions, but those with singlet valence excited states have, thus far, contained a single silicon atom. This work uses high-level coupled cluster theory previously shown to reproduce excited state energies to better than 0.1 eV compared with experiment in order to examine the electronic excited state properties of anions containing silicon and other higher main group atoms as well as their first row analogues. Of the 14 anions involved in this study, 9 possess bound excited states …
Theoretical Electronic And Rovibrational Studies For Anions Of Interest To The Dibs, Ryan C. Fortenberry
Theoretical Electronic And Rovibrational Studies For Anions Of Interest To The Dibs, Ryan C. Fortenberry
Ryan C. Fortenberry
The dipole-bound excited state of the methylene nitrile anion (CH2CN−) has been suggested as a candidate carrier for a diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 803.8 nm. Its corresponding radical has been detected in the interstellar medium (ISM), making the existence for the anion possible. This work applies state-of-the-art ab initio methods such as coupled cluster theory to reproduce accurately the electronic excitations for CH2CN− and the similar methylene enolate anion, CH2CHO−. This same approach has been employed to indicate that 19 other anions may possess electronically excited states, five of which are valence in nature. Concurrently, in order to assist …

The Anthropogenic Influence On Cuejdi River Water Quality, Andreea Ghiurcă, Andreea Lămășanu, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
Water pollution is caused in rural areas, especially by uncontrolled waste deposits located in river bed and in urban areas is discharged, irregular, untreated sewage. The Cuejdiu River is a tributary of the Bitriţa River in the left side, with a total length of 24 km. Evaluation of water quality of the Cuejdiu River was achieved by processing the results obtained from tests analyzed for 30 samples, taken on March 17, 2012, between the mouth of the River Bestriţa and up to the exit of the village Cuiejdi. Analysis of water samples were performed in the laboratory of the Department …
Ultimate Detectability Of Volatile Organic Compounds: How Much Further Can We Reduce Their Ambient Air Sample Volumes For Analysis?, Ki-Hyun Kim
Ki-Hyun Kim
To understand the ultimately lowest detection range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air, application of a high sensitivity analytical system was investigated by coupling thermal desorption (TD) technique with gas chromatography (GC) and time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS). The performance of the TD-GC-TOF MS system was evaluated using liquid standards of 19 target VOCs prepared in the range of 35 pg to 2.79 ng per μL. Studies were carried out using both total ion chromatograms (TIC) and extracted ion chromatograms (EIC) mode. EIC mode was used for calibration to reduce background and to improve signal to noise. …

Room Temperature Syntheses Of Entirely Diverse Substituted Β-Fluorofurans, Li Yan, Kraig A. Wheeler, Roman Dembinski
Kraig A. Wheeler
Synthesis of highly substituted 3-fluorofurans is reported. The sequence began with preparation of tertbutyldimethylsilyl alk-1-en-3-yn-1-yl ethers from 1,4-disubstituted alk-3-yn-1-ones. Subsequent fluorination of alkenynyl silyl ethers with Selectfluor gave 2-fluoroalk-3-yn-1-ones in almost quantitative yield. Subsequent 5-endo-dig cyclizations using chlorotriphenylphosphine gold(I)/silver trifluoromethanesulfonate (5/5 mol%), N-bromo- or N-iodosuccinimide and gold(I) chloride/zinc bromide (5/20 mol%), all at room temperature, provided a facile method for the generation of substituted 3-fluoro-, 3-bromo-4-fluoro-, and 3-fluoro-4-iodofurans in good yields. Also, 2,2-difluoroalk-3-yn-1-ones were prepared by fluorination of alk-3-yn-1-ones under organocatalytic conditions. The structures of (Z)-tertbutyldimethylsilyl but-1-en-3-yn-1-yl ether, 3-bromo-4-fluorofuran, and 3-fluoro-4-(phenylethynyl)furan were confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

Seyed Reza nabavi
Nanocrystalline AMn2O4 (A = Co, Ni, Cu) manganite spinels were prepared by using the sol–gel auto combustion method under the same
synthesis conditions and their physico-chemical properties were studied by XRD, UV–vis DRS, SEM, BET and FTIR. Besides, the reducibility of
oxides was studied by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). The relationship between the properties and activity of spinels in oxidation of 2-
propanol and toluene was investigated. Among all, nickel manganite exhibited the most promising activity, in which the completed conversion of 2-
propanol and toluene occurred at 250 and 350 8C, respectively. Higher activity of nickel manganite oxide was explained …

mahdi shahmiri
Silver/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposites are prepared via quick precipitation method, using hydrazine as a reducing agent. Preparing of silver/PVA nanocomposites by this method is done for the first time. The samples are characterized by Uv-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Nonlinear optical properties are carried out by Z-scan technique using a blue CW laser beam operated at wavelength 405 nm. It is shown that the synthesized samples have negative nonlinear refractive index and the magnitude is in the order of 108. The nonlinear refractive index increases as amount of reducing agent increases.

Modelling Of The Adsorption‐Catalytic Processes In The Multi‐Dispersed Bed, Sergey V. Zazhigalov, Natali A. Chumakova, Andrey N. Zagoruiko
Andrey N Zagoruiko
The simulation work is dedicated to the multidispersed adsorption-catalytic packing, consisting of comparatively large pellets (say, 5-10 mm) of the catalyst-adsorbent and of catalytically active micro-fibers with typical thickness of ~10 microns. During the heating at the regeneration stage the micro-fiber catalyst must be heated much more rapidly than adsorbent-catalyst, due to the much higher unit outer surface area improving the heat exchange. When the adsorbent-catalyst temperature is becoming high enough for partial desorption of chemisorbed VOC, the temperature of the micro-fibrous catalyst will be already as high as necessary one for complete oxidation of desorbed VOCs. This theoretical concept …

Process Of Combined Oxidation Of Co And So2 In Waste Gases Of Non‐Ferrous Smelters At Platinum Glass‐Fiber Catalyst, Sergey V. Vanag, Andrey N. Zagoruiko
Andrey N Zagoruiko
The work is dedicated to the development of the efficient catalyst for the oxidation of CO in presence of significant amounts of SO2. It was experimentally shown that the Pt/Zr-Si glas-fiber-based catalyst is capable to provide complete CO conversion in SO2 presence at temperatures less 300 С, at the same time showing high resistance to deactivation. Application of such catalyst in the reverse-process will allow to raise essentially efficiency of purification of waste metallurgical gases from SO2 under presence of significant amounts (up to 1-2% vol.) of CO.

Carboxymethylation Of Kappa-Carrageenan For Intestinal-Targeted Delivery Of Bioactive Macromolecules, Kok Hoong Leong
Kok Hoong Leong
The work presented herein discusses the carboxymethylation of kappa-carrageenan, a natural linear polysaccharide, to afford a pH-dependent swelling property allowing for intestinal-targeted delivery of bioactive macromolecules. The carboxymethylation conditions with respect to the volume and concentration of sodium hydroxide (VNaOH, CNaOH), weight of monochloroacetic acid (WMCA), and reaction temperature (T) were optimized using a response surface method incorporating a multivariate spline interpolation technique (RSMS). Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled dextran (FD-4; 4.4 kDa) was used as a hydrophilic macromolecule model. Beads made from encapsulating FD-4 in the carboxymethylated kappa-carrageenan displayed pH-dependent swelling and encapsulation efficiency of 74%. The release of FD-4 was low …
