The Ethicality Of Point-Of-Sale Marketing Campaigns: Normative Ethics Applied To Cause-Related Checkout Charities, Jay L. Caulfield, Catharyn Baird, Felissa K. Lee Jan 2020

The Ethicality Of Point-Of-Sale Marketing Campaigns: Normative Ethics Applied To Cause-Related Checkout Charities, Jay L. Caulfield, Catharyn Baird, Felissa K. Lee

Management Faculty Research and Publications

“Would you like to contribute to XYZ charity by adding a dollar to your bill today?” Point-of-sale campaigns for fundraising are common to grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants and warehouse clubs. Commonly referred to as ‘checkout charity,’ these fundraisers have generated over $4.1 billion in contributions for nonprofits over the past three decades. Yet little research has focused on the ethicality of this type of campaign. To address this need, we analyze the issue using behavioral ethics (moral identity and emotional triggers of behavior) and normative theory (consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics). We consider three stakeholder perspectives, including the nonprofit initiating …

Putting The Horse Before The Cart: The Influence Of Trigger Events On Justice Perceptions And Work Attitudes, Bonnie S. O'Neill, John L. Cotton Jan 2017

Putting The Horse Before The Cart: The Influence Of Trigger Events On Justice Perceptions And Work Attitudes, Bonnie S. O'Neill, John L. Cotton

Management Faculty Research and Publications

To date very little research on organizational justice and work attitudes has focused on what starts the process that leads to these perceptions. A considerable amount of organizational research is focused on the end result (e.g., employees’ perceptions, attitudes, or behaviors), which can become difficult to effectively manage or change after-the-fact in a timely or productive manner (Tekleab et al., 2005). In this paper, two studies are conducted that explore a variety of events employees might notice and how they influence workplace outcomes. Study One explores 16 trigger events from prior research and surveys employees in a manufacturing organization about …

Investigating The Effects Of Daily Inventory Record Inaccuracy In Multichannel Retailing, Thomas J. Kull, Mark Barratt, Anníbal C. Sodero, Elliot Rabinovich Sep 2013

Investigating The Effects Of Daily Inventory Record Inaccuracy In Multichannel Retailing, Thomas J. Kull, Mark Barratt, Anníbal C. Sodero, Elliot Rabinovich

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Inventory record inaccuracy (IRI) challenges multichannel retailers in fulfilling both brick-and-mortar and direct channel demands from their distribution centers. The nature and damaging effects of IRI largely go unnoticed because retailers assume daily IRI remains stable over time within the replenishment cycle. While research shows that a high level of IRI is damaging, in reality the level of IRI can change every day. We posit that daily IRI variation increases the uncertainty in the system to negatively affect inventory and service levels. Our research uses data collected daily from a multichannel retailer to ground a discrete-event simulation experiment. Going beyond …

Exploring Firm Characteristics That Differentiate Leaders From Followers In Industry Merger Waves: A Competitive Dynamics Perspective, Jerayr (John) Haleblian, Gerry Mcnamara, Kalin Kolev, Bernadine J. Dykes Sep 2012

Exploring Firm Characteristics That Differentiate Leaders From Followers In Industry Merger Waves: A Competitive Dynamics Perspective, Jerayr (John) Haleblian, Gerry Mcnamara, Kalin Kolev, Bernadine J. Dykes

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Research in strategic management has shown that the timing of firm participation in a merger wave matters, as early movers have been shown to outperform later ones. However, while the consequences of the timing of action within a merger wave have been assessed, the causes that drive these timing effects remain unknown. We draw on the competitive dynamics perspective to investigate firm-level factors that influence the large-scale strategic behavior of leading or following within industry merger waves. We develop hypotheses based on the competitive dynamics argument that the awareness-motivation-capability of firms will influence the timing of competitive action. Consistent with …

Industry Implications Of Value Creation And Appropriation Investment Decisions, David R. King, Rebecca J. Slotegraaf

Management Faculty Research and Publications

As managers weigh their resource investment decisions, we argue that these investments have a direct impact on the growth and volatility of the firm’s industry. With data covering 377 industries across 16 years, we investigate relationships for aggregate firm investments on the growth and volatility of industry profit and sales. Results reveal important, complex relationships between investment in value creation and appropriation and different elements of the industry environment.

Development Of An Occupational Embeddedness Measure, Gary A. Adams, Jennica R. Webster, Danelle M. Buyarski Jan 2010

Development Of An Occupational Embeddedness Measure, Gary A. Adams, Jennica R. Webster, Danelle M. Buyarski

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a measure of occupational embeddedness.

Design/methodology/approach

The construct of occupational embeddedness was defined in terms of the forces that bind people to their occupation. Then a four-part study was conducted to develop a measure of it.

Findings

In Part 1, items were developed and judgmental evidence for their content validity was generated. In Part 2 the initial psychometric characteristics were examined. The results supported the internal consistency reliability and factor structure of the measure. In Part 3, Part 2 was replicated and showed that occupational embeddedness had a negative relationship to …

Organizational Alignment And Supply Chain Governance Structure: Introduction And Construct Validation, Bryan Ashenbaum, Arnold Maltz, Lisa Ellram, Mark A. Barratt Jan 2009

Organizational Alignment And Supply Chain Governance Structure: Introduction And Construct Validation, Bryan Ashenbaum, Arnold Maltz, Lisa Ellram, Mark A. Barratt

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

– The purpose of this paper is to introduce and validate two new constructs with the potential to sharpen our understanding of how and why firms integrate their internal supply chains and assess the governance structure of their supply chains. The first construct, organizational alignment (OA), is a reflective scale measuring the extent to which upper management attempts to foster integration between internal supply chain functions. The second, supply chain governance structure (SCGS), is a formative index, and is a first attempt at developing a measurement instrument to assess SCGS along multiple dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

– Following a literature review, …

Generating Opportunity From Uncertainty, David R. King Jan 2009

Generating Opportunity From Uncertainty, David R. King

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Learning to deal with uncertainty makes organizations more robust. Leaders can take steps to help their organizations take advantage uncertainty. When continued success transitions from informed decision to luck, small differences in the ability of organizations to handle uncertainty can have a large impact. An example from military history is used to outline current day lessons for military and business leaders.

Reducing Causal Ambiguity In Acquisition Integration: Intermediate Goals As Mediators Of Integration Decisions And Acquisition Performance, Margaret Cording, Petra Christman, David R. King Jan 2008

Reducing Causal Ambiguity In Acquisition Integration: Intermediate Goals As Mediators Of Integration Decisions And Acquisition Performance, Margaret Cording, Petra Christman, David R. King

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Integration is a difficult process, but one that is vital to acquisition performance. One reason acquirers encounter difficulties is that the integration process exhibits high levels of intrafirm linkage ambiguity – a lack of clarity of the causal link between integration decisions and their performance outcomes. We introduce the construct of intermediate goals as a mechanism that reduces intrafirm linkage ambiguity. Our structural model results, based on a sample of 129 horizontal acquisitions, indicate that the achievement of two intermediate goals (internal reorganization and market expansion) fully mediates the relationships between four integration decisions and acquisition performance.

The Department of Defense has demonstrated success in managing innovation. The military’s approach to innovation management extends beyond traditional distinctions between internal and external innovation modes. Summarizing specific innovation strategies available to managers develops recognition of this growing reality. The article concludes with resulting lessons that can be more widely adopted by managers.

R&D Investment Level And Environment As Predictors Of Firm Acquisition, Michael Heeley, David R. King, Jeffrey Covin Jan 2006

R&D Investment Level And Environment As Predictors Of Firm Acquisition, Michael Heeley, David R. King, Jeffrey Covin

Management Faculty Research and Publications

R&D investments contribute to the development of firm technology resources, and the possession of such resources often increases a firm’s attractiveness as a potential acquisition target. However, the value ascribed to a firm’s technology resources by would-be acquirers may be moderated by its industry’s environmental characteristics. Using data from 2886 firms, we find that investments in R&D predict acquisition likelihood and that R&D investments are most strongly associated with acquisition of firms under conditions of high environmental munificence and dynamism. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

Strategic Predictors Of Successful Enterprise Systems Deployment, John E. Ettlie, Victor J. Perotti, David A. Joseph, Mark Cotteleer

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose The delivered wisdom to date has enterprise system purchase and implementation as one of the most hazardous projects any organization can undertake. The aim was to reduce this risk by both theoretically and empirically finding those key predictors of a successful enterprise system deployment.

Design/methodology/approach A representative sample of 60 firms drawn from the Fortune 1000 that had recently (1999-2000) adopted enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems was used to test a model of adoption performance with significant results.

Findings Leadership (social learning theory), business process re-engineering (change the company not the technology) and acquisition strategy (buy, do not make) …

An Initial Look At Technology And Institutions On Defense Industry Consolidation, John D. Driessnack, David R. King Jan 2004

An Initial Look At Technology And Institutions On Defense Industry Consolidation, John D. Driessnack, David R. King

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Conventional wisdom holds that defense industry consolidation resulted from decreased defense spending. However, we maintain that understanding dynamic changes in key defense institutions helps provide a more complete explanation for observed consolidation. Specifically, we examine the interaction of evolving technology and changing institutions. Institutions reviewed include procurement policies, weapons requirements process and the procurement organizations. We take an initial look at the industry and highlight how these changes influenced transaction costs in the defense industry more fully explain the forces driving consolidation and provide greater insight to policy makers seeking to improve the performance of the defense industry. Further research …

Complementary Resources And The Exploitation Of Technological Innovations, David R. King, Jeffrey G. Covin, W. Harv Hegarty Jan 2003

Complementary Resources And The Exploitation Of Technological Innovations, David R. King, Jeffrey G. Covin, W. Harv Hegarty

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Technological innovation often results when the resources of a small firm are combined with those of a large one. This is because small and large firms characteristically possess complementary resources whose combination can facilitate innovation success. The possession of complementary innovation-producing resources by small and large firms helps explain patterns of interaction among firms in dynamic, technology-based industries. Propositions are developed that outline how typical resources of small and large firms can be used to explain industry-level phenomena surrounding technological change.

Exploring Business-To-Business Marketsites, Mark Barratt, Karsten Rosdahl Jun 2002

Exploring Business-To-Business Marketsites, Mark Barratt, Karsten Rosdahl

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Business-to-business (B2B) marketsites are quickly becoming one of the major issues for companies in their search for opportunities to improve visibility of their trading activities and sources of further cost reduction. The paper begins with a synthesis of potential benefits resulting from participation in marketsites and then provides a number of initial classifications of marketsites. The paper then introduces some of the major inhibitors and enablers of marketsites and views these from a number of perspectives such as the structure of marketsites, the degree of centricity and the types of products purchased through such marketsites. Finally, some recommendations for further …

Using 4gl Tools In Project-Oriented Courses, Linda Salchenberger

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The widespread availability of fourth generation languages (4GL's) and CASE (computer-aided software engineering) tools has presented students with the opportunity to design and implement real-world systems as class projects within the span of a one-semester course. The use of these tools during the systems development life cycle is discussed based on experiences with a microcomputer-based system which was developed by students in an upper division MIS class. The methodology used for directing student projects and some particular problems faced when using 4GL's as development tools are addressed.
