Expanding The Pool Of Volunteers: Enticing Ethnic Minorities To Become More Involved, Melanie J. Randle, Sara Dolnicar

In Australia the value of volunteering runs into the tens of billions of dollars each year. The multicultural nature of Australia has resulted in greater heterogeneity amongst volunteers; however minorities are still under-represented in mainstream volunteering. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour to structure the study, the volunteering behaviour of ethnic minorities is investigated. All three constructs are found to be relevant for volunteering; however, the role that each construct plays varies between ethnic groups. Findings are significant for managers trying to attract volunteers from different ethnic groups because marketing messages can be targeted to the factors most influential in …
Integrated Logistics And Supply Chain Management: The State Of Practice In Ireland, Austin Smyth, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney
Integrated Logistics And Supply Chain Management: The State Of Practice In Ireland, Austin Smyth, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney
Conference papers
The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland were provided with aid to offset locational disadvantages in the run up to the Single European Market. Since then the Republic has emerged as the fastest growing member of the E.U. Success has not been underpinned by the transport system, suggesting that business has had to overcome locational disadvantages by strong performance elsewhere in the supply chain. The evidence indicates that there are Irish firms operating supply chain management techniques at a truly international standard. The problem is that there are so few in that category Meeting Ireland’s competitiveness challenge means closing the …

Most academic disciplines have their symbolic and material ‘homes’ in the metropolitan centres of the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK). Consequently researchers working in Aotearoa/NZ face a choice as to the kinds of relations they develop with these metropolitan centres. We argue that researchers tend to adopt three particular modes of response: franchise, margin and locale. In this paper we illustrate each mode by reflecting on a joint research programme, Music and Organisation. We suggest researchers need to move beyond franchise and margin responses and develop methods of research that explore local issues using local …
Rational Risk/Benefit Analysis Of Genetically Modified Crops, Stanley P. Kowalski
Rational Risk/Benefit Analysis Of Genetically Modified Crops, Stanley P. Kowalski

Safety concerns over the use of molecular biotechnology in the improvement of crops has generated substantial, heated and confusing debates, often driven by ideology and hysterics. Modification of crops is not new, and biotechnology (in its broadest sense) has been used for over a century to accelerate the development of new crops for food, feed and fibre, so as to meet the demands of a growing global community. The introduction of crops developed via molecular biotechnology [Genetically Modified Crops (GMCs)] represents the latest step in this inexorable innovative progression of technology. However, misinformed concern has led to a broad embrace …

Tourism And Terrorism - Is There A Pattern Of Recovery Following A Terrorist Attack?, Mary Rose Stafford
Theses
The purpose of this research is to ascertain if there is a pattern of recovery in tourism following a terrorist attack. If so, what measures can be taken to mitigate against such a significant downturn in tourism as experienced by the tourism industry following the terrorist attacks of September 112001. The research conducted is a multi-method approach combining secondary research with primary research (in-depth interviews, case studies and tourist surveys) to provide a synthesis of research findings.
The findings suggest that there are defining phases to the recovery process but no clear pattern has emerged. A number of factors are …
