Cross-Cultural Acceptance Of The Euro: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Public Information Marketing, Steven W. Staninger
Cross-Cultural Acceptance Of The Euro: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Public Information Marketing, Steven W. Staninger
Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship
The introduction of the euro currency is a major social, cultural, and economic event in the history of Europe. A massive public information marketing campaign has failed to encourage widespread acceptance of the new currency. This paper analyzes the reasons for this failure, and suggests strategies for future campaigns.

Scripted Thought: Processing Korean Hancha And Hangul In A Multimedia Context, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We compare the cognitive processing of words written in alphabetic scripts with the cognitive processing of words written in logographic scripts. We suggest that the processing of words written in alphabetic scripts relies more heavily on the storage of--and the serial rehearsal properties of--short-term memory's phonological loop. In contrast, the processing of words written in logographic scripts relies more on the storage of--and the spatial-relational rehearsal properties of--visual short-term memory. A series of three experiments investigates implications of these processing differences within a single language, Korean, where words can be written in the alphabetic Hangul or in the logographic Han-cha. …

Foreign Country Priorities In The Internationalization Process: A Measure And An Exploratory Test On British Firms, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Derek S. Pugh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
After a critical analysis of the psychic distance aspect of the Uppsala model of internationalization and empirical studies to test it, this paper proposes a measure to enable comparison between target foreign countries in the priority given them in the internationalization process. An International Priority Index is developed for each target country, and used as the dependent variable in a model to analyze the effects of the independent variables of size of market, affluence of market, geographical distance and cultural distance on foreign country priority choice of home country firms. The measure and the model are given a first test …
Augmenting Applications With Hyper Media, Functionality And Meta-Information, Roberto Galnares
Augmenting Applications With Hyper Media, Functionality And Meta-Information, Roberto Galnares
Dissertations
The Dynamic Hypermedia Engine (DHE) enhances analytical applications by adding relationships, semantics and other metadata to the application's output and user interface. DHE also provides additional hypermedia navigational, structural and annotation functionality. These features allow application developers and users to add guided tours, personal links and sharable annotations, among other features, into applications. DHE runs as a middleware between the application user interface and its business logic and processes, in a n-tier architecture, supporting the extra functionalities without altering the original systems by means of application wrappers.
DHE automatically generates links at run-time for each of those elements having relationships …

Selecting International Modes Of Entry And Expansion, Gregory E. Osland, Charles R. Taylor, Shaoming Zou
Selecting International Modes Of Entry And Expansion, Gregory E. Osland, Charles R. Taylor, Shaoming Zou
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
Selecting a mode for entering or expanding in a foreign market is a crucial strategic decision for an international firm. This article identifies and compares the most influential factors that affect the international modes of entry and expansion decisions of US and Japanese firms. Using mail surveys, this is one of the first studies on this subject to collect data from top executives in both Japan and the USA. Findings reveal that the Japanese are particularly sensitive to external risk and other target market factors. For Americans, company factors, such as international experience, appear to be most important when selecting …

A Fuzzy Expert System For Small Business Loan Processing, Vipul K. Gupta, Serkan Celtek
Journal of International Information Management
In recent years, managerial applications of artificial intelligence, especially in the area of financial services, has received considerable attention. In this paper, a fiizzy logic expert system is developed for approvals of small business loans. Previous studies have used non-fuzzv expert systems. But the fuzzification of the variables used in a business loan approval decisionmaking promises more efficient results. Furthermore, another distinct feature of this paper is its focus on small business loans. CubiCalc fuzzy expert system shell is used to develop the expert system. Knowledge acquisition is made using the resources and expertise of a Small Business Development Center. …
Describing Intelligent Agent Behaviors, Walt Truszkowski, Jagannathan V. Iyengar, Fred Mills
Describing Intelligent Agent Behaviors, Walt Truszkowski, Jagannathan V. Iyengar, Fred Mills
Journal of International Information Management
The development of new intelligent agents requires an interdisciplinary approach to programming. The initial challenge is to describe the desired agent behaviors and abilities without necessarily committing the agent development project to one particular programming language. What are the appropriate linguistic and logical tools for creating a top level, unambiguous, program-independent, and consistent description of the functions and behaviors of the agent? And how can that description then be translated easily into one of a number of program languages? This article provides a case study of the application of a simple Belief, Desire, and Intention (EDI) first order logic to …
Internet Business Model Patents: Obvious By Analogy, Margo A. Bagley
Internet Business Model Patents: Obvious By Analogy, Margo A. Bagley
Faculty Articles
Part I of this Article provides a look at Internet business model patents in light of key patentability requirements mandated by the Patent Act. Part II traces the evolution of the analogous art component of the non-obviousness determination and illustrates how the malleability of the doctrine, as exemplified in several Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit decisions, has particular relevance to prior art definitions for Internet business model patents. Part III of this Article then examines the doctrine of equivalents and explores how the likelihood of improper application of this doctrine in the Internet business model context is increased. …
Impact Of Corporate Casual Wear On Productivity In The Workplace, Joe Luis Hernandez
Impact Of Corporate Casual Wear On Productivity In The Workplace, Joe Luis Hernandez
Theses Digitization Project
In today's workplace there are many reasons why businesses are encouraging their workforce to dress in a more casual manner. Personnel within the workforce who dress casually report improvements ranging from morale to customer relations after the implementation of more relaxed dress codes. It will also be necessary to consider whether or not business casual dress facilitates the tearing down of social and communication barriers.
Does Vanity Describe Other Cultures?: A Cross Cultural Examination Of The Vanity Scale, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, John Watson
Does Vanity Describe Other Cultures?: A Cross Cultural Examination Of The Vanity Scale, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, John Watson
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
Vanity is a psychological construct that describes a person's excessive concern with physical appearance or achievement. A scale, recently developed to measure this construct, has been psychometrically validated using data from U.S. respondents. The goal of this paper is to determine if this scale can be used cross-culturally. If the scale has cross-cultural applicability, it can be used as a counseling device to guide and alert individuals to certain tendencies. The scale also can be used to track foreign cultures as they adopt a consumerism ethos more aligned to Western consumer culture. Based on data from 475 young adults in …

Latino Access To Health Care: The Role Of Insurance, Managed Care, And Institutional Barriers, J. Emilio Carrillo, Fernando M. Trevino, Joseph R. Betancourt, Alberto Coustasse
Management Faculty Research
The health care system in the United States is the most expensive and yet arguably among the least cost effective in the developed world (Anderson, 1998). Despite the highest per person health care spending among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations, the United States still ranks below many along a variety of health indicators (Woolhandler & Himmelstein, 1991). In a complicated health care system where the rules are many and economic forces drive both structure and function, the needs of vulnerable populations inevitably suffer. This chapter explores the consequences of these market forces on a vulnerable population--Latinos …

Information Systems Development And Practice In Organisations In Sri Lanka : An In-Depth Case Study, Sunil G. Rajapaksege
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis describes an investigation of information systems development and practice in a privatised state owned enterprise (North-West Cement Company Limited or NWCL) in Sri Lanka between J95M-2000. The objectives of my study were: (1) to understand the approaches used by NWCL for information systems development; (2) to understand how these approaches relate to the organisational, socio-cultural, economic and political realities of organisations in Sri Lanka; (3) to outline a theory to better understand information systems development and practice for organisations in Sri Lanka; and (4) to make recommendations which could be used to improve information systems development and practice …
On The Interaction Of Alphabetic And Logographic Words With Sounds And Images, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han
On The Interaction Of Alphabetic And Logographic Words With Sounds And Images, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
It is well established that reading alphabetic words is dominated by phonological (sound-based) processes, whereas phonological processes do not appear to dominate the processing of Chinese logographs, where visual processes are more pronounced (for reviews, see Tavassoli, in press; Zhou & Marslen-Wilson, 1999). Most previous demonstrations of these linguistic differences have relied on low-level processes that potentially do not involve short-term memory. For example, they have attempted to assess differences in the speed (measured in milliseconds) by which phonological and semantic information get activated in the brain. Our research adds to a growing stream of consumer behavior research that has …

This paper provides a report of work in progress to implement integrated access to multiple digital collections that are described using a variety of metadata formats. Using the emerging resource discovery and digital library management system, ENCompass, a team at Cornell University Library is experimenting with the principle of modularity–as described by Lagoze–in which a metadata format tailored for simplicity (Dublin Core) is used alongside other, more complex metadata formats.
