Open Source Software: A History, David Bretthauer
Open Source Software: A History, David Bretthauer
Published Works
In the 30 years from 1970-2000, open source software began as an assumption without a name or a clear alternative. It has evolved into a sophisticated movement which has produced some of the most stable and widely used software packages ever produced. This paper traces the evolution of three operating systems: GNU, BSD, and Linux, as well as the communities which have evolved with these systems and some of the commonly-used software packages developed using the open source model. It also discusses some of the major figures in open source software, and defines both “free software” and “open source software.”

Religious Life, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Jesuit School of Theology
Religious life is a generic term for a variety of forms of Christian life that originated, as a radical response to the gospel, in the rst century and continue to develop in the present, predominantly among Roman *Catholics and *Eastern Orthodox but also, especially recently, among Protestants and Anglicans. The Protestant community of *Taize in France has fostered ecumenical exchange.

Cross-Cultural Acceptance Of The Euro: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Public Information Marketing, Steven W. Staninger
Cross-Cultural Acceptance Of The Euro: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Public Information Marketing, Steven W. Staninger
Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship
The introduction of the euro currency is a major social, cultural, and economic event in the history of Europe. A massive public information marketing campaign has failed to encourage widespread acceptance of the new currency. This paper analyzes the reasons for this failure, and suggests strategies for future campaigns.
Application And Robust H??Control Of Pdc Fuzzy Controller For Nonlinear Systems With External Disturbance, Wei-Ling Chiang, Treng-Wu Chen, Ming-Yi Liu, Chun-Jung Hsu
Application And Robust H??Control Of Pdc Fuzzy Controller For Nonlinear Systems With External Disturbance, Wei-Ling Chiang, Treng-Wu Chen, Ming-Yi Liu, Chun-Jung Hsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
In terms of Lyapunov's direct method, a stability criterion is derived to guarantee the stability of the system especially for the resonant and chaotic systems. The common P matrix of the criterion is obtained by using linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization algorithms to solve the robust fuzzy control problem. Based on the control scheme and this criterion, a fuzzy controller is then designed via the technique of parallel distributed compensation (PDC) to stabilize the nonlinear system. Finally, the proposed controller design method is demonstrated through numerical simulations on the chaotic and resonant systems.
A Fuzzy Autopilot Design Approach That Utilizes Non-Linear Consequent Terms, Robert Sutton, Paul J. Craven
A Fuzzy Autopilot Design Approach That Utilizes Non-Linear Consequent Terms, Robert Sutton, Paul J. Craven
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
This paper describes the development of a fuzzy autopilot for controlling the non-linear yaw dynamics of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) model. The autopilot design is based on a new approach that uses a Gaussian fuzzy inference mechanism. For the design study, the AUV model is hosted in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Simulation results are presented which illustrate the potential of this novel methodology.

Naturalized Epistemology And The Law Of Evidence, Ronald Jay Allen, Brian R. Leiter
Naturalized Epistemology And The Law Of Evidence, Ronald Jay Allen, Brian R. Leiter
Public Law and Legal Theory Papers
This paper important developments in epistemology, and defends a theoretical framework for evidence scholarship from the perspective of naturalized epistemology. It demonstrates that naturalized epistemology provides a firm conceptual foundation for much research into law of evidence. These developments in epistemology have not been much noted in legal scholarship, despite their importance in philosophy and their coincidence with some widely shared approaches to evidence scholarship. This article is a partial antidote for the unproductive fascination in some quarters of the legal academy with "postmodern" conceptions of knowledge and truth and to the even more common search by the legal professoriat …

The Miss America Pageant's Influence On The Self-Construction Of Its 1985 Contestants, Debra Deitering Maddox
The Miss America Pageant's Influence On The Self-Construction Of Its 1985 Contestants, Debra Deitering Maddox
Student Work
The author was a contestant in the 1985 Miss America Pageant, choosing to research how participants of that event made sense of their participation and how that participation affected their construction of themselves. Eleven state representatives were interviewed, including the winning Miss America and her 2nd and 4th runners-up. Interviewees were chosen upon consideration of region represented and final placement. This qualitative study utilized a semi-structured style of interviewing and protocol of 15 questions. Contestants’ narratives were analyzed within the frameworks of objectification theory and patriarchy. Results indicated that making sense of the Miss America experience could be a lengthy …
Automated Fault Detection In An Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor: Comparisons Of Biogas Production And Physicochemical Quantities, Alexandra Maria Almeida Carvalho Pinto
Automated Fault Detection In An Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor: Comparisons Of Biogas Production And Physicochemical Quantities, Alexandra Maria Almeida Carvalho Pinto
Doctoral Dissertations
A system capable of rapidly detecting toxic loads entering high-rate anaerobic reactors would greatly enhance their reliability, and could thereby increase their commercial acceptance. A high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment process, called the failure-causing load detector (FCLD), consisting of a small (4-liter) upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor having a short (10-min) hydraulic retention time (HRT), was used as a biosensor to rapidly detect potential problems with the influent wastewater. Sensors were used to monitor biogas production in the reactor, as well as pH, conductivity, and turbidity in the effluent from the reactor. The FCLD system was tested using the following …
Hafters And Crafters : Verbal Unruliness And The Contest For Artistic Discourse In The English Renaissance, David A. Haines
Hafters And Crafters : Verbal Unruliness And The Contest For Artistic Discourse In The English Renaissance, David A. Haines
Doctoral Dissertations
Chapter One argues for the recovery of the word haft. An account of the denotative varieties of haft provides a way of looking back into an implicit logic of rhetorical practice which has fallen out of use. Chapter Two focuses on two texts by John Skelton which demonstrate the rhetorical texture of "literary" contests: the flyting "Agenst Garnesche" (1514) and the interlude Magnyfycence (c. 1515). In the former, Skelton falls to verbal blows with his opponent, Christopher Garnesche, in an effort to exalt his own reputation at court while humiliating Garnesche. In Magnyfycence, Skelton enlarges an understanding of haft through …
Experiential Aspects Of Neglect: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Kurt D. Openlander
Experiential Aspects Of Neglect: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Kurt D. Openlander
Doctoral Dissertations
A review of the empirical literature on maltreatment points to the need for more knowledge about neglect, especially the subjective aspects of neglect. In order to gain information about this topic, twelve adult volunteers were interviewed in detail about various times in which they had experienced themselves as neglected. In accordance with the principles of existential phenomenology, a qualitative methodology for research within the social sciences, the transcribed interviews were thematized, in this case with the aid of a group of scholars trained in phenomenological interpretation. Three interrelated themes emerged against the ground of Interpersonal Relationships: Feeling Alone, Feeling Invisible …
Conceptual Constraints On Thinking About Genocide, David Moshman
Conceptual Constraints On Thinking About Genocide, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Our thinking is unavoidably constrained by our conceptual structures. To the extent that we reflect on and reconstruct our concepts, however, we can sharpen our thinking. The first section of this article considers the nature of concepts, highlighting a standard distinction between prototype-based and formal concepts. Drawing on these insights from cognitive psychology, the second section suggests that the ability to recognize and understand genocides is greatly restricted by Holocaust-based conceptions of genocide. In turn one can enhance one’s understanding via the construction and application of formal concepts of genocide. Extending this argument, I observe in the third section that …
