Racioethnic Diversity On The Web: A Lost Opportunity, Angela L. Farrar, Albert Bartlett, Jonathan Probber Jan 1999

Racioethnic Diversity On The Web: A Lost Opportunity, Angela L. Farrar, Albert Bartlett, Jonathan Probber

Hospitality Review

The authors report the generally poor results attained when the NAACP assessed the diversity management performance of 16 major hotel companies. Then, as an alternative means of assessing the same hotel companies’ commitment to diversity, they report the results of an analysis of the world-wide web pages the companies use to represent themselves in the electronic marketplace. Analysis of the web sites found virtually no evidence of corporate concern for diversity.

The Direct And Indirect Influences Of Human Values On Product Ownership., Michael W. Allen, Sik Hung Ng Jan 1999

The Direct And Indirect Influences Of Human Values On Product Ownership., Michael W. Allen, Sik Hung Ng

Michael Allen

The present study proposes a conceptual model of how consumers' choice of products may be influenced by the human values that they endorse. The model suggests that values can influence product choice directly or indirectly depending on the meaning of the product and the kind of judgement used to evaluate that meaning. Speci®cally, values would have a direct influence on product choice when consumers attend to a product's symbolic meaning and make an a€ective judgement, and have an indirect influence (via tangible attribute importance) when consumers attend to a product's utilitarian meaning and make a piecemeal judgement. To test the …

Functional Analysis: Deriving Systems Knowledge From Bibliographic Information Resources, R. Watts, A. Porter, Cherie C. Trumbach Jan 1999

Functional Analysis: Deriving Systems Knowledge From Bibliographic Information Resources, R. Watts, A. Porter, Cherie C. Trumbach

Management Faculty Publications

Analyses of particular technology developments provide vital managerial intelligence. Framing of such analyses is key to maximize their managerial value. This paper presents a case analysis of automotive fuel efficiency technologies, posed as a functional analysis, rather than as a technology analysis. This functional perspective provides a systems frame of reference, yielding enhanced managerial knowledge. The case illustrates the use of bibliometric methods to glean systems intelligence from large abstract databases.

A Model To Integrate Data Mining And On-Line Analytical Processing: With Application To Real Time Process Control, Rahul Singh Jan 1999

A Model To Integrate Data Mining And On-Line Analytical Processing: With Application To Real Time Process Control, Rahul Singh

Theses and Dissertations

Since the widespread use of computers in business and industry, a lot of research has been done on the design of computer systems to support the decision making task. Decision support systems support decision makers in solving unstructured decision problems by providing tools to help understand and analyze decision problems to help make better decisions. Artificial intelligence is concerned with creating computer systems that perform tasks that would require intelligence if performed by humans. Much research has focused on using artificial intelligence to develop decision support systems to provide intelligent decision support.

Knowledge discovery from databases, centers around data mining …

Creating A Registration Database Using Microsoft Access 97, Darren A. Otte

Graduate Research Papers

Every business or organization that conducts any type of training, whether on a small or large scale, must deal with logistical issues. There are several ways of keeping track of relevant and important information, including anything from paper based systems to off the shelf computer applications. Very often, these methods are cumbersome or not applicable to the needs of the organization. This research project focuses on the customization of training registration information and logistics for a specific company, for the purposes of this paper called XXXX, using a database.

Specifically, a Microsoft Access database was created to keep track of …

Customizable And Ontology-Enhanced Medical Information Retrieval Interfaces, Gondy Leroy, K.M. Tolle, Hsinchun Chen Jan 1999

Customizable And Ontology-Enhanced Medical Information Retrieval Interfaces, Gondy Leroy, K.M. Tolle, Hsinchun Chen

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This paper describes the development and testing of the Medical Concept Mapper as an aid to providing synonyms and semantically related concepts to improve searching. All terms are related to the userquery and fit into the query context. The system is unique because its five components combine humancreated and computer-generated elements. The Arizona Noun Phraser extracts phrases from natural language user queries. WordNet and the UMLS Metathesaurus provide synonyms. The Arizona Concept Space generates conceptually related terms. Semantic relationships between queries and concepts are established using the UMLS Semantic Net. Two user studies conducted to evaluate the system are described.

Local Coherence And Its Limits: A Second Look At Second Sentences, Desmond Allison, Susheela Varghese, Siew Mei Wu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Our article takes up Joy Reid's (1996) proposal that second sentences deserve a second look in academic writing research and pedagogy. Reid's data and commentaries indicate that second sentences, the sentences following topic sentences, make important but generally underrated contributions to the (in)coherence of students' written paragraphs. Her study, in a U.S. university, found that English as a second language (ESL) student writers often developed paragraphs that did not meet the expectations of experienced native English speaker (NES) readers. We offer a contextualized critique and partial replication of Reid's exploratory study. Our research, in Singapore, investigates second sentence writing by …

East Vs. West: Strategic Marketing Management Meets The Asian Networks, George T. Haley, Chin Tiong Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Strategic management in Asia is different. Decision-making differs from that taught in Western, and even Asian, schools of business. In the last decade, the influence of Japanese management systems on Western management practice has become evident. Though the Japanese economy is the world's second largest, and Japan's population substantial, neither compares with the combined economies and combined populations of non-Japanese Asia. The influence of the most aggressive elements of the non-Japanese Asian business communities, the Overseas Chinese and Overseas Indian Networks cannot help to be felt on Western management practice. This article explains why this difference in decision-making styles exists, …
