Building A Foundation For Knowledge Management Research: Developing, Validating, And Applying The Knowledge Internalization Construct, Kamphol Wipawayangkool

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

The notion of knowledge internalization (KI), albeit a critical link in Nonaka's (1994) organizational knowledge creation theory, has not been rigorously conceptualized and defined, let alone operationalized. To strengthen the foundation for knowledge management (KM) research, we attempt to fulfill the following research objectives in the three essays of this dissertation. In the first essay, by drawing from Anderson (1983)'s ACT (adaptive control of thought) theory and Glaser et al. (1985)'s framework on the dimensions of cognitive skills, we develop the construct of KI and demonstrate its nomological validity by examining its role in knowledge sharing phenomenon through its relationships …

Fundamental Signals, Future Earnings And Security Analysts' Efficient Use Of Fundamental Signals During 1991 Through 2008, Sherwood Lane Lambert

Accounting Dissertations

This dissertation builds upon one of the foundation articles in Fundamental Analysis, written by Abarbanell and Bushee [1997] (AB-97), that studied the relationship of fundamental signals (combinations of items reported in the financial statements) to future accounting earnings during 1983-1990. Guided by fundamental financial and managerial/cost accounting concepts, this study adds fundamental signals to the AB-97 earning-signals model. The added fundamental signals include proxies for operating leverage, market share, markup, and total manufacturing costs. A revised ("Experimental") long-term growth variable is introduced that allows for negative EPS (loss) values in the geometric mean growth rate computation. The expanded model is …

Data Mining In Financial Markets, Stephen Evans Jan 2011

Data Mining In Financial Markets, Stephen Evans

Information Systems & Operations Management Theses

Momentum in financial markets can cause securities prices to continue trending upward/downward based on the recent performance. This paper reviews a study that attempts to discover how much daily returns in the stock market can be explained by financial momentum. This study uses classification data mining to attempt to predict the direction of daily returns of randomly selected stocks from the Russell 1000 and Russell 2000 stock indexes. The study uses moving averages of historical daily stock prices as attributes, along with different data mining classifiers, to attempt to make these predictions. A secondary goal of this study is to …

The Rise Of Glocal Generation Y: How Its Personality And Psychological Contract Is Affected By Global Forces And Local Context, Seyedeh Hoda Vaziri Bozorg

Management Theses

When Generation Y started to enter the workforce in the early 2000s, discussions about their characteristics and their impact on organizations began among scholars around the world. A question has been raised whether the generational shift seen around the world shares common characteristics and whether globalization and technology advancement have lead to a Global Generation Y. This thesis criticizes the idea of Global Generation Y, and defines the concept of Glocal Generation Y, which is influenced by global forces but reacts differently based on its local context. However, there are still some common characteristics that can be used by human …

When Are Super Bowl Advertisings Super? An Empirical Analysis Of The Economic Impact Of Super Bowl Advertising, Jin-Woo Kim

Marketing Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the relationship between Super Bowl advertising and advertisers' market valuation. The first essay identifies several factors that influence the financial rewards of this media-placement strategy. Specifically, I examine the impact of each ad's featured characters and appeals, and the product benefits promoted, on abnormal stock returns for sponsoring companies that appear in Super Bowl ads. Event study results show that Super Bowl advertising from 2004 to 2008 is positively related to abnormal stock returns for advertisers. Cross-sectional regression analyses indicate that market value of Super Bowl advertisers is positively related to likeable characters, emotional appeals, and approach …

Developing Structural Maps Of Sales Research Knowledge: Three Essays, Chien-Chung Chen Jan 2011

Developing Structural Maps Of Sales Research Knowledge: Three Essays, Chien-Chung Chen

Marketing Dissertations

The overall goal of the dissertation is to analyze the accumulated knowledge and explore research gaps in empirical sales research. Therefore, applying a structural map derived from a comprehensive synthesis of empirical studies, researchers can efficiently and effectively identify constructs' positions in nomological networks and then explore new research directions. The dissertation includes three complementary essays. Essay 1 creates a structural map of constructs in a nomological network generated by meta-analysis and analyzed by social network analysis. Key constructs, bivariate relationships, missing links, and constructs' positions in nomological networks are identified. Essay 2 then detects moderator effects among constructs and …

Framing The Flu, Jennifer Lynn Mcmillen Jan 2011

Framing The Flu, Jennifer Lynn Mcmillen

Marketing Dissertations

Since Tversky and Kahneman's article on prospect theory in 1979, there have been many articles published on framing with mixed success in finding preference shifts and in which frame subjects are most persuaded. Framing has been a source of much research and debate in extant literature, regarding whether the effect even exists and if it does, what accentuates or mitigates the effects found. Using the flu as the context, this article incorporates sad versus happy moods and emotional versus rational appeals to highlight when the most persuasive frame changes and to provide practitioners a more complete picture on the most …

Are Coworkers Good Soldiers Or Good Actors?, Tae Seok Yang Jan 2011

Are Coworkers Good Soldiers Or Good Actors?, Tae Seok Yang

Management Dissertations

Drawing from attribution theory, I propose a field study which develops and tests a model to describe (1) how individuals use multiple observations of coworker behavior to form attributions about whether beneficial behaviors have self-serving or prosocial motives, (2) how the attributions regarding the motive for coworker behavior (self-serving or prosocial) moderate the influence of organizational citizenship behaviors on affect toward that coworker, and finally, (3) how such affect toward a coworker translates into more distal performance-related evaluations of coworkers. Specifically, two attribution cues, distinctiveness and consistency, are considered as mechanism through which coworkers form beliefs about the motives for …

Firm Governance And Shareholder Value Creation: A Study Of Cross-Border Acquisitions By U.S. Acquiring Firms, Dynah A. Basuil

Management Dissertations

Cross-border acquisitions have become an important part of the arsenal of strategies that firms deploy in internationalizing their operations. With the significant resources that are generally involved in such transactions and the wide range of performance outcomes, it is important that studies examine the factors that contribute to the performance of such acquisitions. My study seeks to do that. By drawing primarily on agency theory, I examine the role of firm governance in the creation of value from the perspective of shareholders at U.S. acquiring firms in international acquisitions. Further, guided by the tenets of transaction cost economics and resource …
