Image Selling: How Depictions Of Power Relations, Plasticity, And Abjection In High-Fashion Advertisements Construct Terrifying Social Narratives, Jennifer Lee Litton Dec 2011

Image Selling: How Depictions Of Power Relations, Plasticity, And Abjection In High-Fashion Advertisements Construct Terrifying Social Narratives, Jennifer Lee Litton

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This paper examines how high-fashion advertisements use visual rhetoric in order to construct social narratives related to power struggles, plasticity, and abjection. In creating these types of images, high-fashion advertisers send explicit messages to their viewers regarding the ways they should engage with the depicted social narratives, ranging from objectification to violence to death. Through a close rhetorical analysis and observational study of high-fashion advertisements, this paper discusses the problematic nature of the marketing techniques and how they skew interpretations of social issues.

Sequence Stratigraphy, Distribution And Preservation Of Organic Carbon, And Reservoir Properties Of The Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale, Of The Central Appalachian Basin; Northern West Virginia And Southwestern Pennsylvania, Roy L. Sexton Iv

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale of the central Appalachian basin is an unconventional resource play with approximate aerial extent of 34,000,000 acres (137,000 km²), and an estimated 84 trillion cubic feet (2.4 trillion m³) of recoverable natural gas and three billion barrels of recoverable natural gas liquids. Advances in drilling and completion technology have enabled economic production of hydrocarbons from the Marcellus. Despite increased exploration and production of the formation, uncertainties remain regarding controls on spatial and stratigraphic variations in reservoir properties such as total organic carbon (TOC), mineralogic composition, and authigenic components. Additionally, there is a lack of understanding …

Protocols For Use Of The Cela Academic Information System, Alexandra Mariaaguiar Leister Jul 2011

Protocols For Use Of The Cela Academic Information System, Alexandra Mariaaguiar Leister

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

The Academic Information System (AIS) is a digital database used by academic administrators in landscape architecture programs to store and analyze information about the operations of their academic units. It is an information access tool that allows administrators to compare information about their academic units with information from clusters of other academic units also involved in the education of landscape architects. The reasons for CELA to create the AIS were "to eliminate the making of critical decisions about landscape architecture education based on intuition-driven information reinforcing the idea that there are priorities for releasing the data" (Taylor, Ellis, Ozdil 2010). …

An Exploration Of The Attributes Of Sense Of Place In A Culturally-Diverse Dallas District: Learning From Cedar Springs Case Study, Susan Alford Jul 2011

An Exploration Of The Attributes Of Sense Of Place In A Culturally-Diverse Dallas District: Learning From Cedar Springs Case Study, Susan Alford

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Neighborhood centers rich in cultural diversity and history are desirable and special places for communities. Cedar Springs "The Strip" is a dynamic gay commercial neighborhood center serving Cedar Springs district's and is specified as unique although experiencing socio-spatial changes in character as expressed by its community (Vanderslice, 2008; Zillow, 2010). Even though research in literature reveals various definitions of sense of place, it is not clear what attributes make a particular place special and desirable such as Cedar Springs district which in turn can inform design and plans to respond to the community's sense of place. This research identifies and …

Optimization Of Operating Parameters For Minimum Mechanical Specific Energy In Drilling, Todd Robert Hamrick May 2011

Optimization Of Operating Parameters For Minimum Mechanical Specific Energy In Drilling, Todd Robert Hamrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Efficiency in drilling is measured by Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE). MSE is the measure of the amount of energy input required to remove a unit volume of rock, expressed in units of energy input divided by volume removed. It can be expressed mathematically in terms of controllable parameters; Weight on Bit, Torque, Rate of Penetration, and RPM. It is well documented that minimizing MSE by optimizing controllable factors results in maximum Rate of Penetration. Current methods for computing MSE make it possible to minimize MSE in the field only through a trial-and-error process. This work makes it possible to compute …

Art Educators And Practicing Artists: Strengthening The Curriculum And Building A Creative Community, John Christopher Williams May 2011

Art Educators And Practicing Artists: Strengthening The Curriculum And Building A Creative Community, John Christopher Williams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

An artist residency consists of a visiting artist (dance, musical, theatrical, or visual) creating work in and teaching their craft to an audience of participants. Artist residencies take place in a variety of settings, in public and private schools, after-school programs, in day care and preschool programs, community centers, and adult recreational and care facilities. Over time in a school setting artist residencies have evolved to include school curriculum, input and collaboration from the host teacher. I believe artist residences could become a catalyst for school curriculum change to focus on the arts. Arts integrated residencies and curriculum can impact …

"Chance" Screenplay, Simone Laroche May 2011

"Chance" Screenplay, Simone Laroche

Honors Capstone Projects - All

My Capstone Thesis is a creative screenplay pursuing the complexities of predestination and our innate obsession to control fate. I became intrigued with the idea that our decisions or actions dictate outcomes we may have had the ability to prevent or perpetuate. I recently found it difficult to accept my misfortunes for ineptitude or lack of preparation. Instead I called it “fate” or “destiny” that circumstances were not meant to work in my favor. In hindsight I realized I had allowed my passivity to compensate for my lack of commitment and courage to take risks. Granted, I do believe regardless …

Toward An Ontology Of Design Philosophy In Landscape Architecture: Developing A Personal Design Philosophy, Rhonda Erin Fields Mar 2011

Toward An Ontology Of Design Philosophy In Landscape Architecture: Developing A Personal Design Philosophy, Rhonda Erin Fields

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

This thesis uses qualitative inquiry to examine the process for developing a personal design philosophy. The larger goal of the study seeks to understand the universal and particulars of design as philosophy with the intent to develop an ontology for design philosophy in landscape architecture. "Design is a crucial factor in the relation between beings and worlds as they shape each other, yet as a philosophy, design itself hardly exists" (Willis, 2009). Willis and others in the field of design philosophy suggest that design as a philosophy has only recently begun to be studied. Further, to begin an understanding of …

Impact Of Suburbs: Assessing Tree Coverage Using Geo-Spatial Tools In The City Of Fort Worth, James Colton Yorek

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Throughout the last century, developers kept pace with the growing housing demand, and in doing so, former rural landscape continued to become part of the urban fabric (Corrigan et al, 2004; Secker 2007). This newly acquired land is primarily being shaped by development typically in the form of single-family residential subdivisions (Berger, 2006). With the increasing consumption of land for development there are increasing concerns from the public surrounding issues of land use changes, natural resources, and the protection of land through conservation efforts (Johnston et al, 2006). One of these issues is the acceptance of the urban forest as …

Elementary Schoolyard Landscapes As Outdoor Learning Environments: North Texas Stakeholders' Perceptions Of The No Child Left Inside Act, Shawn Marie Bookout

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

So that children can be exposed to a more stimulating outdoor educational experience, the United States public education system developed and implemented strategies to accomplish an integrative approach between indoor and outdoor learning (Gardner 1991; Wells and Evans 2003; Titman 1994; Moore 1986). One of these strategies is to allow for an enhanced connection between children and the outdoor environment through the betterment of school landscapes. As described by Wohlwill (1983), the outdoor environment is - that vast domain of organic and inorganic matter that is not a product of human activity or intervention. The purpose of this study is …

A Retrospective Population Based Cohort Study Examining The Black White Gap In Infant Mortality, Ina Marie Peoples

Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award

Black women in one US City have more than a 2-fold likelihood of experiencing a death in the womb or an infant death within the first year of life when compared to Whites. The purpose of this retrospective population based cohort study was to examine the unexplained high rates of Black fetal and infant (feto-infant) mortality in this city. The study was built on the perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) model. The PPOR model maps each death in a geographic region into four distinct periods of risk based on birth weight and age at death. The study relied upon 51,303 …

Progress Toward Removal Of The Purification Tag In A Putative Toxin Protein Via Site-Specific Mutagenesis And Proteolytic Cleavage, Joanna L. Fridlund, Bethany G. Taylor, Michael H. Godsey

CUP Undergraduate Research

Putative toxin protein BC_2332, isolated from Bacillus cereus, which is a relative of Bacillus anthracis, shows similarity in the active site to ADP-ribosylating proteins present in cholera and diphtheria. Preliminary attempts to measure the activity of the putative toxin were unsuccessful leading to the hypothesis that the purification tag is hindering the activity. This hypothesis is supported by crystal structure analysis showing the putative active site occupied by the purification tag. Our objective was to remove the purification tag, via two different methods, in order to relieve potential inhibition. Both methods have faced obstacles and the work is continuing.

Cultural And Historic Preservation Planning In Small Cities And Suburbs: A Study Of A Cultural Asset Inventory Of Kennedale, Texas, Gregory S. Collins

Public Affairs Theses

This thesis examines how smaller communities, which often lack the financial resources and the so-called "high culture" or marketable culture found in larger cities, can overcome challenges and develop cultural and historic preservation programs that perform the social function of unifying a community while also providing economic development opportunities that are connected to the community. The paper discusses "authenticity," and how this stated goal of city planners is actually a complex and contested concept rather than an objective standard that can be used to evaluate cultural planning programs. The paper reviews a number of cultural planning methods discussed in the …

Socioeconomic Background And Parental Values: An Examination Of Approaches To Bureaucratic Discretion At The Street-Level, Jesse R. Booher Jan 2011

Socioeconomic Background And Parental Values: An Examination Of Approaches To Bureaucratic Discretion At The Street-Level, Jesse R. Booher

Public Affairs Theses

Scholarly literature on policy implementation at the street-level generally focuses on how workers act in response to external pressures. Pressures can include policy rules, organizational culture, and the identities of the clients. Academia has produced scant work, however, examining how the identities and backgrounds of street-level bureaucrats influence their approach to the discretion inherent in their jobs. This study seeks to fill that literary gap. Using semi-structured interviews with street-level bureaucrats in North Texas, the study yields two strong relationships. First, a relationship exists between the participants' socioeconomic backgrounds as children and how they approach discretion inherent to street-level bureaucracy. …

Data Sharing Between Transportation Planning And Public Health: Issues And Opportunities Using A Regional Eco-Logical Framework, Michele Berry Jan 2011

Data Sharing Between Transportation Planning And Public Health: Issues And Opportunities Using A Regional Eco-Logical Framework, Michele Berry

Public Affairs Theses

Transportation planning has been shown to strongly impact public health yet collaboration and data or information sharing between the two communities is lacking. The Eco-Logical approach is a potential solution designed to advance transportation planning through an integrated planning process that includes other stakeholders. However, since the Eco-Logical approach provides no guidance on forming collaborations, network theory will be used to fill this hole. Both the Eco-Logical approach and network theory place heavy emphasis on information sharing and data exchange. This study will examine the current status of data sharing between transportation planning and public health through an analysis of …
