We investigate how the accounting treatment of intangible assets on managers’ likelihood of issuing voluntary earnings guidance (MEF). We find that unrecognized intangibles (immediately expensed) are negatively associated with MEF issuance, while recognized intangibles (capitalized) show a positive association. These findings hold across various factors such as analysts’ coverage, industry type and for a subsample that excludes software firms permitted to capitalize software development costs under SFAS No. 86. In additional, we investigate the cross-sectional determinants of MEF issuance based on the characteristics of firm intangibility. We find a significant increase in the likelihood of MEF issuance for higher unrecognized …

In an era of rapid advances in artificial intelligence, the deployment of robots in organizations is accelerating. Further, robotic capabilities are expanding to serve a broader range of leadership behaviors related to task accomplishment and relationship support. Despite the increasing use of robots in various roles across different industries, research on human-robot collaboration in the workplace is lagging behind. As such, the current research aims to provide a state-of-the-science review and directions for future work in this underdeveloped area. Drawing on current leadership paradigms, we review human-robot collaboration studies from four academic disciplines with a history of publishing such work …

Research on the relationship between work stress and employee creativity has been mixed. This study on 823 female attorneys in China identifies employee creative self-efficacy and employees’ value of Zhongyong as moderators in this relationship. In this study, work stress is assessed by the perceived work uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study found that although Zhongyong, which involves an employee’s ambidextrous thinking, can be helpful for employee creativity, low levels of Zhongyong are better for employee creativity in an uncertain context such as the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the fact that high levels of Zhongyong result in …

After Howard, Before The Mirage: The Early Corporate Era Of Nevada Casinos And The Shifting Visual Landscape Of Las Vegas, David Schwartz
Executive Vice President & Provost Faculty Publications
Las Vegas casino history is often divided into the “classic” or “Rat Pack” era and the “corporate” or “megaresort era.” Classic Vegas starts in the early 1950s as the burgeoning gaming industry established itself on the Strip and can be said to end in 1967, when Howard Hughes’ purchase of five casinos signaled the start of a new regime. The megaresort era started in 1989 with the opening of The Mirage, and the time between Hughes’ arrival and Steve Wynn’s game-changer is typically brushed over as a mere precursor to the massive changes of the 1990s.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rationale and process of creating a new course focused on business sustainability in the University’s Department of Business Administration. Currently, the University offers just one business sustainability course, delivered once every two years as a January study-abroad course in Chile. While an outstanding experience, a limited number of students can take advantage of the opportunity. After identifying this gap in our business programs, we created a stand-alone course that focuses on business sustainability. This paper addresses the following questions: What is the business case for adding the course? What should the …

The casino closures that swept through the United States were entirely unprecedented. Never before had an entire hospitality industry been shut down overnight. Why Change In The Gaming Industry Should Never Surprise Anyone, David Schwartz

There has been a great deal of change in the news lately for the gaming world. After more than a decade as head of MGM Resorts, Jim Murren is stepping down. The Chinese coronavirus outbreak has sent Macau gaming revenues into a tailspin. On a happier note, a big brand name is returning to a Las Vegas casino, with the announcement that Hilton will be operating three hotels as part of the Genting Group’s Resorts World development. Change is in the air. But that’s nothing new, and nothing the industry shouldn’t be expecting.

The large, positive correlation between speaking time and leader emergence is well-established. As such, some authors have argued for a ``babble hypothesis'' of leadership, suggesting that only the quantity of speaking, not its quality, determines leader emergence. However, previous tests of this notion may have been problematic. Some studies have asserted a causal effect of speaking time on leader emergence based on experimental studies, but have limited participant communication, access to reliable information, or both. Other studies have used more ecologically valid designs, but have not always controlled for relevant participant traits or roles, suggesting potential endogeneity effects. Testing the …

Identifying Stabilizing And Destabilizing Factors Of Job Change: A Qualitative Study Of Employee Retention In The Hong Kong Travel Agency Industry, Monica W.C. Choy, Ken Kamoche

This study aims to investigate and compare the congruent and incongruent perceptions of managers and frontline employees toward employee retention in Hong Kong travel agencies. An integrated model was developed using data from 32 interviews with 16 manager–employee dyads. Key factors influencing employee turnover include high customer contact, anti-social working hours, working environment, office location, supervisor and co-worker relations, remuneration, and career prospect. We conclude by reviewing the theoretical and practical implications for travel trade industry management with regard …

Academic Self-Concept As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Reported Leadership Ability, Jeffrey A. Miles, Stefanie E. Naumann
Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles
One of the most frequently reported student learning outcomes on college campuses is leadership ability. Thus, identifying the factors associated with leadership development is an important area for research. Previous studies have found mixed results in the relationship between gender and leadership perceptions. The current study proposes that academic self-concept intervenes in the relationship between gender and leadership, and helps to explain these earlier mixed findings. In a study of 597 undergraduate students from a private west coast university, we found that academic self-concept fully mediated the relationship between gender and self-reported leadership ability. Implications for research and practice are …

Supply Chain Management Has Changed The World Economy, Michael Gravier

I’m making a bold assertion: global supply chain management practices are single-handedly holding down inflation across the globe. Economists have been asking for a while now why inflation stubbornly remains below “ideal” levels, despite uses of various policy levers. There is some evidence that it could be due to the ability of modern global supply chains to continue to find new and cheaper sources of production—the power of competition—coupled with old fashioned managerial innovation.
