For both China and Japan, the late 19th century and early 20th century can be characterized as a chaotic period of death and rebirth. Faced with the choices of “modernize or go bust,” the Meiji oligarchs and Qing empire scrambled to solidify a unique national identity amidst the waves of Western influence. As the most rapidly urbanized city in the world, Shenzhen’s history contains potential case studies of human-nature relationships. This thesis discusses the environmental history in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China from 1960 to 2010 from the perspective of the oyster industry. The study invokes the existing research about the industrial, cultural and urban planning history of Shenzhen in the last 40 years and discusses the environmental impact on marine ecology and oyster industry in Shenzhen. This research project is based on an analysis from photographs from newspaper and online media archives. All of the images the newspapers published from three specific media sources will be examined. These photographs have been accessed through online archives. This study will focus on images from the tail end of the war specifically from the years 2007-2009, as the war ended in May 2009. Since Pakistan’s inception, Gilgit-Baltistan, a sprawling region in Northern Pakistan, has not been granted provincial status due to its colonial association with the disputed region of Kashmir. Gilgit-Baltistan refutes its forceful integration with Kashmir, an unfortunate remnant of British divide-and-rule strategy, and demands provincial recognition and constitutional rights. Pakistan unfairly claims that it awaits the UN-sanctioned plebiscite in Kashmir to determine the region’s status. However, the likelihood of a plebiscite is little to none, since the Indian government officially annexed Indian-held Kashmir in August 2019, breaching the UN resolution on the plebiscite. Studies of the yakuza generally agree that full body tattoos would be one of the hallmarks of the criminal bands, simply another intimidation tactic. This mindset most likely comes from the idea that centuries ago, criminals tattooed as punishment would often seek out tattoo artists to convert their punitive markings into decorative ones. In attempting to hide the perhaps shameful proof of their misdeeds and their exclusion from society, criminals unconsciously used tattoos as a way to prove that they were still included in the group that rejected them. This thesis addresses Prince Sihanouk and the model of absolute monarchy in Cambodia during his ‘golden era.’ What is the legacy bequeathed to his country that emanated from his years as his country’s autocratic leader (1954-1970)? What did he leave behind? My original hypothesis was that Sihanouk was a libertine and ruthless god-king who had immense pride for his country. He fought for his people and had strong good intentions. This thesis explores Chinese Communist Party's political use of history as a fuction to conduce patriotism and to legitimize Party rule. The research initially focused on how anti-Japanese sentiments have grown in China since the Tiananmen demonstrations in 1989 and after the esablishment of a new educational system in 1991. It then explores the impact of CCP's bias referral to conservative Japanese textbooks and views of history. These studies suggested that under the Patriotic Education Campagin and CCP's representation of Japanese right wing textbooks in China, the state has established methods to control the anti-Japanese sentiments to take focus away …
