Will Marion Cook (1869-1944): Shows List And Songs And Instrumental Numbers, Peter M. Lefferts
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
The present material supplements my on-line document “Chronology and Itinerary of the Career of Will Marion Cook.” That put into some kind of order a number of biographical research notes, principally drawing upon newspaper and genealogy databases. It is one in a series ---“Chronology and Itinerary of the Career of”---devoted to a small number of African American musicians active ca. 1900-1950. In those other documents, compositions were interleaved with other kinds of references following a chronological sequence. Instead of doing the same for Cook, his shows and songs and instrumental numbers, spanning a creative career of almost a half century …

J.R.R. Tolkien And The 1954 Nomination Of E.M. Forster For The Nobel Prize In Literature, Dennis Wilson Wise
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Wise speculates on the involvement of J.R.R. Tolkien in the group nomination of E.M Forster for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954; he discusses not only the politics behind the nomination but reads Forster’s Howards End and A Passage to India in the light of the tension between Tolkien’s interests in nationalism and inter-racial cooperation.

The Otherworlds Of Men, Aaron Morris
The Otherworlds Of Men, Aaron Morris
English Theses & Dissertations
The Otherworlds of Men is a collection of short stories that draws equally from the traditions of speculative science fiction dystopias and western noir. The stories often have a plot grounded in gritty realism, similar to the stories of Annie Proulx, Daniel Woodrell, Cormac McCarthy, and Jim Harrison; however, the main character typically is typically injured by a psychic wound that leads to a speculative, otherworldly occurrence. The characters experience time travel, out of body experiences, wormholes to other worlds, spaceflight, distortions of relativistic physics, and, in one case, a character is haunted by Geronimo’s ghost. The characters experience these …

Finding The Centre: 'English' Poetry After Empire, Mark Williams, Alan Riach
Finding The Centre: 'English' Poetry After Empire, Mark Williams, Alan Riach
Kunapipi
The Australian poet Les Murray has talked about 'the dreadful tyranny where only certain privileged places are regarded as the centre and the rest are provincial and nothing good can be expected to come out of them. I figure the centre is everyv/here. It goes with the discovery that the planet is round, not flat. Every point on a sphere is the centre. It seems to be a corollary of the discovery of the roundness of the world that people haven't taken seriously yet'.

Culture And Mental Health: Considering The Role Of The Complex Cultural-History In Irish-American Population, Tiffinie Patricia Sesko
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study investigates the mental health of Irish immigrants and first generation Irish Americans. As the Irish-American population makes up such a large portion of the entire population of the United States, it is important we acknowledge its origin and take that into account where mental illness and treatment are concerned as the Irish culture has a pronounced effect on mental health. The intended audience of this review are expert and non-expert members of the clinical setting and community who may gain insight on helping a client or family member find a way to understand and express repressed feelings affectively. …

Excerpt: "I'm crazy about trains! says Doc Holliday (Jason Robards) to his friend Wyatt Earp (James Garner) in Hour of the Gun (Sturges Ch. 6), explaining why he's waiting on the Contention train. The Catholic Church And The Formation Of Human Rights Doctrine In El Salvador, Edward Mikus Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The Catholic Church’s focus on human rights in the years following the Second Vatican Council led to increased political activity amongst the clergy in socially stratified El Salvador. This development, in turn, led to a breakdown in relations between the Church and the Salvadoran State
Poverty Reduction As A Christian Call: A View On Microfinance Loans From Pentecostal Churches In Zambia, Irene Banda
Poverty Reduction As A Christian Call: A View On Microfinance Loans From Pentecostal Churches In Zambia, Irene Banda
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
The impact of microfinance activities in reducing poverty has received mixed reviews. Some studies show positive impact while others show increasing criticism towards practices considered deleterious to poor people’s welfare. There are similar opinions amongst Pentecostal churches in Zambia. These churches acknowledge the usefulness of microfinance, but because of negative experiences, they are concerned about its efficacy. The general observation of these churches is that spiritual maturity helps those living in poverty identify the root causes, and are therefore able to plan tangible ways out of poverty. They assert that when people grow spiritually and biblical principles like those in …

Commuters, Wanderers, And 'International Mongrels': Resistance And Possibility In Post-Immigrant Literature, Leslie Singel
Commuters, Wanderers, And 'International Mongrels': Resistance And Possibility In Post-Immigrant Literature, Leslie Singel
Theses and Dissertations
The recognizable motifs of the immigrant tale have been upended, as the traditional
narrative has been adapted to capture the multitude of directions, individuals, nations, and paths
of the twenty-first century migrant. In four chapters, I examine selected works from the authors
Colum McCann, Junot Díaz, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to argue for a new
designation, “post-immigrant literature.” Post-immigrant literature treats critically the themes of
loss, regret, and forced assimilation from perspectives shaped by post-colonial, post-modern and
post-identity politics thinking. Rather than narratives stressing the limitations imposed by
deterministic social forces, post-immigrant texts posit more agency, and anxiety, …

Unpolished Emeralds In The Gem State: Hard-Rock Mining, Labor Unions, And Irish Nationalism In The Mountain West And Idaho, 1850-1900, Victor D. Higgins
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Irish immigration to the United States, extant since the 1600s, exponentially increased during the Irish Great Famine of 1845-52. For many Catholic Irish, the legacy of colonization and the Famine intensified an existing narrative of forced exile and dispossession. It also endowed them with a predisposition to identify similarities between colonial exploitation and capitalism. These factors fed a growing Irish nationalism on both sides of the Atlantic, protean in the 1700s, which reified in the 1800s, around Anglophobia. In the Mountain West where mining spearheaded exploration and settlement, the Irish made up the largest ethnic group in hard-rock mines in …
