Six Faces Of Love: Shudraka’S Versatile Art In (Mruchhakatika) The Little Clay Cart, Mohan Limaye Dec 2015

Six Faces Of Love: Shudraka’S Versatile Art In (Mruchhakatika) The Little Clay Cart, Mohan Limaye

Mohan Limaye

In the realm of ancient India’s classical Sanskrit drama, Shudraka’s The Little Clay Cart (Mruchchakatikam, a Sanskrit play first performed in India around two thousand years ago) occupies a special place. Its author has received much praise for “his variety, his skill in the drawing of character, [and] his humor” (Ryder, Kale, Sharma, and Basham). But his treatment of love has not received enough attention.  This is where The Little Clay Cart excels.  In it, the theme of renewal or “Resurrection” -- literal as well as figurative -- is all pervasive.  This transformation occurs as a result of the enlivening and …

Diffractive Possibilities: Cultural Studies And Quantification, Ezekiel J. Dixon-Román Dec 2015

Diffractive Possibilities: Cultural Studies And Quantification, Ezekiel J. Dixon-Román

Ezekiel J Dixon-Román

The belief in the methods of quantification has not been widely shared in cultural studies. On the one hand, the dominant orientation of quantitative social science research continues to hold on to positivist assumptions of objectivity and the privileged access to the “truths” of natural phenomena via the logics of mathematics. On the other hand, cultural studies has maintained a hermeneutics of suspicion toward the methods of quantification. But, to what extent does this suspicion toward quantitative inquiry compromise the deconstructive project of cultural studies by falling into the trap of the quantitative/qualitative and, related, nature/culture binaries? Building on new …

The Imperial Graft: Horticulture, Hybridity, And The Art Of Mingling Races In Henry V And Cymbeline, Jean E. Feerick

Jean Feerick

The Oxford Handbook of Shakespeare and Embodiment brings together 42 of the most important scholars and writing on the subject today. Extending the purview of feminist criticism, it offers an intersectional paradigm for considering representations of gender in the context of race, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, and religion. In addition to sophisticated textual analysis drawing on the methods of historicism, psychoanalysis, queer theory, and posthumanism, a team of international experts discuss Shakespeare's life, contemporary editing practices, and performance of his plays on stage, on screen, and in the classroom. This theoretically sophisticated yet elegantly written Handbook includes an editor's Introduction that …

After Fifty Years: Notes On Reconsidering A Thesis On Macbeth, Clifford Davidson Dec 2015

After Fifty Years: Notes On Reconsidering A Thesis On Macbeth, Clifford Davidson

Clifford Davidson

How many scholars look back at their doctoral dissertations after a half-century and consider how much critical discussion has changed and how accepted methodologies have been overthrown. To be sure, as a graduate student I already was uncomfortable as early as the 1950s with the so-called “New Criticism,” which valued complexity and “organic unity” in a poem, novel, or dramatic work. Yet it was in those days quite impossible to imagine that the demise of current fashions of thought was in fact imminent, a shattering of the framework into which so much effort had been expended for so many years.

Hidden Stories, Inclusive Perspectives: Describing Photographs Of Jewish Refugees In Shanghai, Rachel Wen-Paloutzian Dec 2015

Hidden Stories, Inclusive Perspectives: Describing Photographs Of Jewish Refugees In Shanghai, Rachel Wen-Paloutzian

Rachel Wen-Paloutzian

When a collection of over 600 photographs and negatives was discovered in the backlog of Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Library’s Department of Archives and Special Collections, there were moments of surprise, intrigue, and fascination. While information about the collection is limited, the pictures have presumably been taken by Werner von Bolternstern, a photographer and avid postcard collector, who donated the collection (among many others) to LMU. The Werner von Bolternstern Shanghai Photograph and Negative Collection offers rare visual records and remarkable documentation of life in Shanghai, China, from 1937 to 1949. Besides Shanghai urban landscapes, historical architecture, and street scenes, …

Review Article: Could Isidore’S Chronicle Have Delighted Cicero? Using The Concept Of Genre To Compare Ancient And Medieval Chronicles, Jesse W. Torgerson Dec 2015

Review Article: Could Isidore’S Chronicle Have Delighted Cicero? Using The Concept Of Genre To Compare Ancient And Medieval Chronicles, Jesse W. Torgerson

Jesse W Torgerson

Richard W. Burgess and Michael Kulikowski’s A Historical Introduction to the Chronicle Genre
from its Origins to the High Middle Ages (Volume I in the authors’ planned series Mosaics of
Time: The Latin Chronicle Traditions from the First Century BC to the Sixth Century AD) posits
that medieval studies has neglected to engage in a systematic, historically-informed reflection
on the genre of chronicles. The present article asserts that this challenge to the field presents
a unique opportunity for an interdisciplinary discussion of wide scope and lasting duration. I
thus argue that Burgess and Kulikowski’s larger points may be reconciled with …

"New Strategies In Using Watermarks To Date Sub-Saharan Islamic Manuscripts" In Arts And Crafts Of Literacy In Sub-Saharan Africa, Brigaglia, A. And Nobili, M., Eds., Michaelle L. Biddle Dec 2015

"New Strategies In Using Watermarks To Date Sub-Saharan Islamic Manuscripts" In Arts And Crafts Of Literacy In Sub-Saharan Africa, Brigaglia, A. And Nobili, M., Eds., Michaelle L. Biddle

Michaelle Biddle

For more than a century watermarks have been used as an important component in cataloging, dating, and authenticating books, manuscripts, art work, musical scores, financial instruments and other paper items. The gains can be immense if watermarks and countermarks, not as singletons but in combination, are studied as only one aspect of a paper sheet and that examination is combined with study extending across many disciplines. The Andrea Galvani Pordenone paper mills provide a useful case study as to how we can deduce date ranges for their watermarks by using a holistic approach – combining paper sheet analysis with the …

Time And Again: Early Medieval Chronography And The Recurring Holy First-Created Day Of George Synkellos, Jesse W. Torgerson Dec 2015

Time And Again: Early Medieval Chronography And The Recurring Holy First-Created Day Of George Synkellos, Jesse W. Torgerson

Jesse W Torgerson

A literary and philosophical analysis of George Synkellos' (d. 810) historical vision in his 'Chronography'. The article argues that, despite the apparent disciplinary paradox, George Synkellos' vision of history coherently drew together an Aristotelian conception of time with his own exegesis of the scriptures, and a contemporary theology of the encounter with the divine in liturgical worship.
