Jill Channing

What would Virginia Woolf do if she taught at a community college today? She did teach at the closest thing to a community college of her time. In her twenties, Woolf taught for three years at Morley College, an evening institute set up for working men and women in London (Bell 105).

The Spread Of Lithobolia, Emerson Baker Dec 2007

The Spread Of Lithobolia, Emerson Baker

Emerson Baker

In the holiday 2007 issue of New England Ancestors, Diane Rapaport introduced readers to the strange case of the "Stone-Throwing Devil" that attacked the Walton family of Great Island (present-day New Castle, New Hampshire). Throughout the summer of 1682, the Waltons and their home and tavern were constantly pelted with rocks. In addition to this stony assault, objects moved about the house or disappeared, and people heard strange noises. Since no culprits were ever seen, the Waltons believed the cause was what contemporaries called "lithobolia, or the stone-throwing devil" (lithobolia is Greek for stone-thrower).

The Waltons became convinced that …

"Migrant, Tourist, Pilgrim, Monk: Mobility And Identity In A Global Age", William T. Cavanaugh Dec 2007

"Migrant, Tourist, Pilgrim, Monk: Mobility And Identity In A Global Age", William T. Cavanaugh

William T. Cavanaugh

Globalization is often portrayed as ushering in a world without borders, a mobile world where everything is shifting. This essay aims to nuance this portrayal by examining different kinds of mobility in the globalized world and the identities they create. It begins with examining two typical figures from a globalized world: the migrant and the tourist. Then two figures from religious traditions—the pilgrim and the monk—are examined as resources for a positive response to globalization.ABSTRACT FROM AUTHORCopyright of Theological Studies is the property of Theological Studies and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites or posted …

"In All Things Love" Immigration, Policy-Making And The Development Of Preferential Options For The Poor, Michele R. Pistone, John J. Hoeffner Dec 2007

"In All Things Love" Immigration, Policy-Making And The Development Of Preferential Options For The Poor, Michele R. Pistone, John J. Hoeffner

Michele R. Pistone

The invitation to write for this symposium stated that the preferential option for the poor “asks us to define what law and public policy would look like if consideration for the poor was at the heart of our conception of the common good.” Inquiries of this kind are useful and necessary—to a point. They also can become counter-productive. The issue of immigration, which we discuss here to illustrate our larger point about the general appropriateness of claiming that a specific policy prescription is demanded by the preferential option for the poor, presents the complications of the matter in particularly stark …

Edge Of Empire, 1671-1716: Documents Of Michilimackinac (Copublication With Mackinac Island State Park Commission), Joseph Peyser

Jose Antonio Brandao

Few places were as important in the seventeenth-century European colonial New World as the pays d’en haut. This term means "upper country" and refers to the western Great Lakes (Huron, Michigan, and Superior) and the areas immediately north, south, and west of them. The region was significant because of its large Native American population, because it had an extensive riverine system needed for beaver populations—essential to the fur trade—and because it held the transportation key to westward expansion.
It was vital to the French, who controlled the region, to be on good terms with its peoples. To maintain good …

James R. Fleming

The selection of research articles on climate change and anthropogenic greenhouse warming presented here appeared in peer-reviewed journals over the course two centuries, from 1824 to 1995. Each article is significant in its own right. Some are landmark papers. Each is accompanied by a short essay that provides historical context and points the reader to additional readings and citations.
