To define ourselves as Americans, we often like to invoke the still-potent idea, inherited from the Puritans, of a "city upon a hill." Steeped in a mythic discourse on our earliest conception of America as an elect nation, this phrase envisions the community at large as "the pilot society for the world" engaged in a noble experiment of innocence, consensus, justice, and freedom for all, while driving to achieve myriad forms of greatness. Heritage is important to regional development in terms of promoting a sense of place and a sense of identity for those in the region. Heritage is often expressed through culture and the arts as a means of manifesting a community’s sense of what the community or region is about. For Indigenous communities this is particularly relevant given the lack of social capital as a result of colonialism and displacement. The trajectory of religious phenomena has been to give a reflective, yet

formative understanding of the ethos endemic to a culture. Pursuant to this

thought, the ethos of African American religion can rightfully be described as a

religious sociological construct, mired in a myriad of changes. These changes

have had a profound effect on how African Americans relate to their God, their

world, and themselves. The chief aim of this enterprise is to chronicle the

transformation of Black Religion in the United States, noting the social and

This booklet contains a documentation of the first round of Acting for the Future which uses participative drama workshops and a professional theatre performance to promote positive mental health and suicide prevention. The first round was implemented by Smashing Times Theatre Company from January to December 2005 and funded by Area Development Management and Dormant Account Fund Disbursement Board. The project is still on going. Few studies report long term follow-up of community gatekeeper training programs that aim to facilitate help-seeking for suicide and there are none in Aboriginal communities. This study aimed to determine long term effects of the Shoalhaven Aboriginal Suicide Prevention Program (SASPP), which used community gatekeeper training as its primary strategy. Following consultation with the Aboriginal community, a brief questionnaire and semi-structured interview was completed by 40 participants who attended a community gatekeeper workshop 2 years earlier. Fifteen of the 40 participants stated that they had helped someone at risk of suicide over the 2-year follow-up period. Intentions to help and …

Responsible design practice should include environmental advocacy and a focus on community — subjects often lacking in design education. My creative project is the result of investigations into how designers integrate nature into their design process. By increasing their awareness for communal and environmental advocacy at the undergraduate level, students can develop responsible design practices at the beginning of their career. The result is the student's accumulation of integrity.

From Underground Cult To Public Policy For Citizens: Democratizing An Open Source Artifact At A Policy Level In South Korea, Kwang-Suk Lee

Purpose - This study explores the feasible use of free and open source software (FOSS) at a policy level in South Korea, which is reacting against being locked into only one technology company, Microsoft.

Methodology/Approach - Based on participatory democratic theory, this paper suggests that the normative role of the state is as a public mediator in the development of an IT infrastructure encouraging greater freedom of choice and the establishment of an electronic environment — such as the community-based use of software technology — for citizens to use easily and freely.
