Pride And Protest: A Veteran And An Activist Discuss The American Flag, Jeremy Dobbins, Will Davis

Veterans' Voices on WYSO

When President-elect Donald Trump visited Vandalia earlier this year, a young man named Tommy DiMassimo rushed the stage. He was arrested and sentenced to one year’s probation. This month, a Federal judge ended that probation early without objection from the Department of Justice. Tommy DiMassimo is an activist, and before the Trump incident, he participated in a march at Wright State University protesting racism and police brutality where he stood on an American flag. Many veterans were outraged. Marine Corp veteran and Wright State student Jeremy Dobbins of Springfield was there, and upset by the demonstration. Our Veterans’ Voices series …

Clubs For The Unclubbable: Humor And Literary Sociability, Laura Kasson Fiss Dec 2016

Clubs For The Unclubbable: Humor And Literary Sociability, Laura Kasson Fiss

TechTalks

What’s a club for the unclubbable? A book or magazine. This notion underlies a strain of humor about clubs in the aftermath of Britain’s 1870 Education Act. Beneath the jokes about men gathering to hide behind their newspapers lies an earnest aspiration to create a print equivalent of a club ethos: an institution that cultivates fellow feeling. Humorists such as Jerome K. Jerome, J. M. Barrie, Israel Zangwill and G. K. Chesterton jokingly redefined the club for new classes of readers, who tended to be “unclubbable” not because of the quality of their sociability, but for reasons of class, gender, …

Learning From The Past: 19th Century Student Perspectives On Science Education, Andrew Fiss Dec 2016

Learning From The Past: 19th Century Student Perspectives On Science Education, Andrew Fiss

TechTalks

This talk indicates the central conceit of my research: that we can improve twenty-first-century STEM education through recovering student perspectives from the nineteenth century. In the US, many of the subjects, rationales, and pedagogical techniques in our current classrooms started to appear around the time of the Civil War, and studying the past can therefore tell us about the roots of our current problems of underrepresentation, standardization, and science engagement. Student perspectives are especially important, as they are today, because they provide diverse accounts of the pitfalls and promises of past classes. In this respect, my research looks to unlikely …

Livd: Issue 15.2: "Letting Go", Portland State University. School Of Art + Design Dec 2016

Livd: Issue 15.2: "Letting Go", Portland State University. School Of Art + Design

LIVD

Layout, imagery, and editing: Meredith James

LIVD is a semi/annual publication produced in the Pacific Northwest, dedicated to the intersection of art, design, culture and how these influence lived experience.

LIVD pays hommage to the inspiring and idealistic efforts of the early twentieth century avant-garde, balancing the academic with the personal and experimental.

Issue 15.2 includes contributions responding to the following prompt: screwing up, messing up, vulnerability, shame... that sort of thing. Why isn't the prompt simply: failure? Because something strange happens when you ask people to talk about failure, they start talking about something else entirely.
