In this essay, I examine two French translations of Edgar Allen Poe’s poem “The Raven”—the 1865 translation by Charles Baudelaire and the 1875 translation by Stéphane Mallarmé, which is accompanied by a series of illustrations by impressionist painter Édouard Manet. I argue that through their translations of “The Raven”, these two French poets enter into a competition not only with Poe, but also with each other. I find evidence of this competition in the translations themselves and also in the extra-textual content that supplements each translation. My argument is informed by secondary scholarship surrounding Poe, Baudelaire, and Mallarmé and by …

Desplazamiento Y Distanciamiento Lingüístico En El Teatro De Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda: La Mujer Que Cayó Del Cielo, Vy T. Phan
Senior Theses and Projects
In the 1980s, Rita Quintero, a Tarahumara from northern Mexico, was detained in a mental hospital in Larned, Kansas for twelve years because of ignorance and maltreatment from Kansas state officials and health care workers. As a result of their inability and lack of effort to understand her culture, the doctors diagnosed Rita with schizophrenia and forced her to take psychiatric medications. Rita’s case eventually caught national and international attention, especially through the work of the Mexican playwright, Victor Hugo Rascón Banda (1948-2008) who produced the theater piece La mujer que cayó del cielo (2000) to detail the actual events …

In this paper, I discuss the problem of naming and namelessness in Albert Camus’ The Stranger and in Kamel Daoud’s The Meursault Investigation as a way to explore postcolonial discourse surrounding names as a form of othering. In The Stranger, Camus chooses not to name the Arab that falls victim to Meursault, thereby setting into motion the narrative of The Meursault Investigation by Daoud, which acts as a retelling and response to Camus’ work. I argue that Camus’ decision not to name the victim, preferring instead to label him the Arab throughout the story, is a fundamentally orientalist act …

Perceptions Concurrentes De La Liberté Chez Sartre Et Camus Dans Le Théâtre Existentialiste, Kendall Hall

This thesis compares two existential writers, Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, and their perception of freedom through the medium of theatre. By comparing two plays written around the same time period, Caligula (1944) and Huis Clos (1944), and by examining aspects of theatre including the “mise en scène,” stage direction or action, and the voice of the actors, I show how their greatest point of contention is their definition of freedom and how they set up artificial situations (“situations-limites”) to articulate human freedom. Through a variety of supporting materials including theoretical texts by the two authors and secondary sources …

This research project analyzes the political and social effect of Teatro por la identidad’s most prominent productions A propósito de la duda (2000) by Patricia Zangaro, and El archivista (2001) by Héctor Levy-Daniel, during the post dictatorship era in Argentine theater. I will draw attention to the military dictatorship (la Junta Militar) who seized power from 1974 to 1983, and was responsible for the disappearance of 30,000 Argentines and the displacement of over 500 children. In response to these violations, the performances have led to a resurgence in the establishment of human rights organizations in Argentina. Through the use of …

The Cuban Revolution that took place in 1959 sparked a mass movement of Cubans to leave the island known as the Cuban Diaspora. To live in another place, a country and within a culture drastically different is a continual internal and external confrontation that many Cubans face living in the United States. Immigration and exile are central themes that emerge from Cuban literature and art. In the field of theater, many Cuban and Cuban-American playwrights such as Matías Montes Huidobro (1931), Alberto Pedro (1954-2005) and María Irene Fornés (1930), have illustrated the effects of immigration and exile on the displaced …
The Appropriation Of African Objects In Pablo Picasso’S Les Demoiselles D’Avignon, Madison Hummer
The Appropriation Of African Objects In Pablo Picasso’S Les Demoiselles D’Avignon, Madison Hummer
Senior Theses and Projects
In the early summer of 1907, after months of preparatory studies, Picasso completed the first version of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. By mid-summer, he'd repainted two of the heads of the nude female forms to resemble African reliquary figures. This thesis examines this decision under the greater context of early-20th century colonialism. Why did Picasso include Africanizing elements in the Demoiselles, and to what extent can we apply the term "cultural appropriation" to his decision in modern art history?
