Trinity College And Hartford:The Impact Of Community Learning Courses And Internships On Student Perceptions Of Hartford, Jennifer Martin Apr 2018

Trinity College And Hartford:The Impact Of Community Learning Courses And Internships On Student Perceptions Of Hartford, Jennifer Martin

Senior Theses and Projects

Trinity College is located in Connecticut's capital city of Hartford, which opens opportunities for student engagement with the city. Through participation in Community Learning Courses or Hartford Internships, both of which can be counted for course credit during a student's undergraduate years, students have the opportunity to be active in Hartford and the community. This research paper seeks to compare these student experiences and asks how do perceptions of Hartford vary among Trinity students, and are there differences between those who enrolled in Community Learning Courses verses Career Development internships? Relying on qualitative interviews with Trinity College juniors and seniors, …

L’Étranger À Travers L’Arabe: Meursault Contre-Enquête De Kamel Daoud Comme Relecture Postcoloniale D’Albert Camus, Carlos Gonzalez Apr 2018

L’Étranger À Travers L’Arabe: Meursault Contre-Enquête De Kamel Daoud Comme Relecture Postcoloniale D’Albert Camus, Carlos Gonzalez

Senior Theses and Projects

In this paper, I discuss the problem of naming and namelessness in Albert Camus’ The Stranger and in Kamel Daoud’s The Meursault Investigation as a way to explore postcolonial discourse surrounding names as a form of othering. In The Stranger, Camus chooses not to name the Arab that falls victim to Meursault, thereby setting into motion the narrative of The Meursault Investigation by Daoud, which acts as a retelling and response to Camus’ work. I argue that Camus’ decision not to name the victim, preferring instead to label him the Arab throughout the story, is a fundamentally orientalist act …

Urban Development In Hartford: Neoliberalism, Inequality, And Trinity College As An Anchor Institution, Eavan Flanagan

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis explores the ways in which neoliberal governance takes place in Hartford, CT, particularly as the city struggles to make ends meet. It looks at the Hartford's dependence on corporations, and its growing political and economic alignment with universities. This research examines the effects of urban renewal on the city, and how post-war policies and development shape the inequalities that exist in Hartford today. Lastly, this thesis examines the inequalities and spatial dynamics in Hartford's Southside neighborhood, Frog Hollow, and between Trinity College and Frog Hollow in particular.

Influence Of Alcohol On Time-Based Prospective Memory And Electrophysiological Measures In College-Aged Individuals, Christy C. Chan Apr 2018

Influence Of Alcohol On Time-Based Prospective Memory And Electrophysiological Measures In College-Aged Individuals, Christy C. Chan

Senior Theses and Projects

College students have higher rates of alcohol-use disorders (AUDs) than that of same-aged non-college students, with an estimated 31% of U.S. college students meeting the diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse (Borsari et al., 2007; Knight et al., 2002). College age is also a critical period for brain development, including regions responsible for the development of prospective memory (PM), making the brains of college students vulnerable to the effects of alcohol. This study investigated the influence of alcohol on the underlying brain activity associated with PM in light- and heavy-alcohol-drinking college students. PM was measured with the Memory for …

The Things We Carry: Pilgrim Identity And Material Culture Along Spain’S Camino De Santiago, Isabelle Moore Apr 2018

The Things We Carry: Pilgrim Identity And Material Culture Along Spain’S Camino De Santiago, Isabelle Moore

Senior Theses and Projects

In recent decades, the mediaeval Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route has enjoyed a significant resurgence in popularity. Despite the route’s Christian heritage as “the way of St. James,” todays Camino-walkers present an impressive range of spiritual, physical, and personal motivations for undergoing the route. This modern twist on an ancient tradition has sparked an academic discussion surrounding what constitutes a “pilgrim” versus a “tourist,” including the ways in which people of different motivating identities experience heritage. I investigated this dichotomy by walking the Camino Frances and conducting ethnographic fieldwork from St. Jean Pied de Port, France to Santiago, Spain. In …

Teatro Por La Identidad: Derechos Humanos E Identidad En El Teatro Argentino De La Posdictadura, Grace O'Donnell Apr 2018

Teatro Por La Identidad: Derechos Humanos E Identidad En El Teatro Argentino De La Posdictadura, Grace O'Donnell

Senior Theses and Projects

This research project analyzes the political and social effect of Teatro por la identidad’s most prominent productions A propósito de la duda (2000) by Patricia Zangaro, and El archivista (2001) by Héctor Levy-Daniel, during the post dictatorship era in Argentine theater. I will draw attention to the military dictatorship (la Junta Militar) who seized power from 1974 to 1983, and was responsible for the disappearance of 30,000 Argentines and the displacement of over 500 children. In response to these violations, the performances have led to a resurgence in the establishment of human rights organizations in Argentina. Through the use of …

Using Institutional Characteristics To Estimate Return On College Education, Nate Choukas Apr 2018

Using Institutional Characteristics To Estimate Return On College Education, Nate Choukas

Senior Theses and Projects

Since the 1980s, the college wage-premium in the United States has reached all time highs. As a result, college education is a critical benchmark in securing high paying jobs. While the bachelor’s degree serves as a gateway into more lucrative careers, postsecondary education can be very costly, with some taking on substantial amounts of debt to finance their schooling. Despite the increasing wage-premium, there is an even wider earnings disparity amongst college graduates than between graduates and non-graduates. Research on higher education returns suggests that most individuals – even those ranked as having low ability – benefit financially from their …

Immigration Enforcement In The Age Of Trump: Local Government Responses To Federal Immigration Rhetoric And Policy Change, Abigail Painchaud Apr 2018

Immigration Enforcement In The Age Of Trump: Local Government Responses To Federal Immigration Rhetoric And Policy Change, Abigail Painchaud

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis explores how local governments, and specifically police departments are responding to the federal immigration rhetoric and policy changes. Previous literature argues that the national government’s role in immigration will strongly shape how local governments respond and how they will change their policies. In the first section, this thesis examines sanctuary cities across the United States and uses a specific data set of sanctuary cities to determine their status and their changes under the new administration. I find that despite the constant change on the national level and the anti-immigrant rhetoric, localities around the United States are pursuing accommodating …

Resistencia Y Asimilación: El Espacio Liminal En El Teatro Cubanoamericano, Michael Mardoian Apr 2018

Resistencia Y Asimilación: El Espacio Liminal En El Teatro Cubanoamericano, Michael Mardoian

Senior Theses and Projects

The Cuban Revolution that took place in 1959 sparked a mass movement of Cubans to leave the island known as the Cuban Diaspora. To live in another place, a country and within a culture drastically different is a continual internal and external confrontation that many Cubans face living in the United States. Immigration and exile are central themes that emerge from Cuban literature and art. In the field of theater, many Cuban and Cuban-American playwrights such as Matías Montes Huidobro (1931), Alberto Pedro (1954-2005) and María Irene Fornés (1930), have illustrated the effects of immigration and exile on the displaced …

Leave-Taking’S Prevailing Effect On Real Wage Growth: Paid Vs. Unpaid Maternity Leave, Soe Han Tha Apr 2018

Leave-Taking’S Prevailing Effect On Real Wage Growth: Paid Vs. Unpaid Maternity Leave, Soe Han Tha

Senior Theses and Projects

Paid maternity leave’s effect on women’s real wage growth is indeterminate in theory. Paid maternity leave could help a woman return to the same job postpartum, reducing the unemployment in between jobs (which we see as external leaves). Simultaneously, paid maternity leave could incentivize women to take more leave within a job (which we see as internal leaves). According to the human capital theory, if more women increase leave-taking due to the subsidy on leave and the cheaper opportunity cost of pregnancy, women’s overall productivity will decline and their wage growth will slow down. This analysis uses the National Longitudinal …

A Comparison Of Offline And Online Measures Of Metacognition, Michelle Treglia Apr 2018

A Comparison Of Offline And Online Measures Of Metacognition, Michelle Treglia

Senior Theses and Projects

Both offline and online measures have advantages and disadvantages as ways of measuring metacognitive skills. The present study compared data using an offline measure of metacognition, The Metacognition Five (MC5), to an online think-aloud and reflect when prompted measure. The online measure used The Oregon Trail, a computer game used in social studies curriculum. The participants were 8th grade students who were asked to play The Oregon Trail once as a “novice” and then again as an “expert” (after having played six additional times on their own). The results suggest there is no difference in correlations between the offline …

Monetary Policy At The Zero Lower Bound: Implications Of High Costs Of Credit During A Recession, Louisa Kammerer Apr 2018

Monetary Policy At The Zero Lower Bound: Implications Of High Costs Of Credit During A Recession, Louisa Kammerer

Senior Theses and Projects

This paper examines the challenges policymaker (and firms) encounter when confronted by a recession at the zero lower bound, when traditional monetary policy is ineffective in the face of deteriorated balance sheets and high costs of credit. Within the larger body of literature, this paper focuses on the cost of credit during a recession, which constrains smaller firms from borrowing and investing, thus magnifying the contraction. Extending and revising a model originally developed by Walker (2010) and estimated by Pandey and Ramirez (2012), this study uses a Vector Error Correction Model to analyze the effects of relevant economic and financial …

The Effects Of Early Life Stress On Long-Term Potentiation In Pathway From The Medial Prefrontal Cortex To The Basolateral Amygdala, Thomas Gitchell Apr 2018

The Effects Of Early Life Stress On Long-Term Potentiation In Pathway From The Medial Prefrontal Cortex To The Basolateral Amygdala, Thomas Gitchell

Senior Theses and Projects

A leading neurocircuitry model of emotional regulation points to the pathway from the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) to the basolateral amygdala (BLA). This pathway has been implicated in fear conditioning and extinction studies and its malfunction is hypothesized to underlie affective disorders such as PTSD and anxiety. Interestingly, the mPFC-BLA pathway shows delayed maturation in both humans and rats, rendering it vulnerable to early life stress (ELS). Indeed, several studies have linked ELS to emotional dysregulation as well as changes in the amygdala and PFC. However, no study has ever been done on the effect of ELS on long-term potentiation …

Exploring The Intentionally Diverse Charter Model: A Potential For Progress In Meaningful School Integration, Jennifer Martin Apr 2018

Exploring The Intentionally Diverse Charter Model: A Potential For Progress In Meaningful School Integration, Jennifer Martin

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis explores the potential of the intentionally diverse charter model. By first analyzing the presence of charter schools in our educational system and then exploring past and contemporary segregation in the United States, this thesis highlights the need for educational policy that addresses bringing meaningful diversity into schools. This thesis makes an argument for the merits of intentionally diverse charter schools as a way to innovate best practices for the charter school sector as well as the potential for these innovations to be adopted by traditional public schools. This work builds upon existing scholarship to highlight the potential in …

The Appropriation Of African Objects In Pablo Picasso’S Les Demoiselles D’Avignon, Madison Hummer Apr 2018

The Appropriation Of African Objects In Pablo Picasso’S Les Demoiselles D’Avignon, Madison Hummer

Senior Theses and Projects

In the early summer of 1907, after months of preparatory studies, Picasso completed the first version of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. By mid-summer, he'd repainted two of the heads of the nude female forms to resemble African reliquary figures. This thesis examines this decision under the greater context of early-20th century colonialism. Why did Picasso include Africanizing elements in the Demoiselles, and to what extent can we apply the term "cultural appropriation" to his decision in modern art history?

Beyond The Binary: How Discourses Affect Non-Binary People's Access To Gender-Affirming Healthcare, Lori Puopolo Apr 2018

Beyond The Binary: How Discourses Affect Non-Binary People's Access To Gender-Affirming Healthcare, Lori Puopolo

Senior Theses and Projects

Sociological literature on the medicalization of trans people has looked at how medical providers use a medical model of trans identity to determine which trans people may have access to gender-affirming healthcare. This study adds to the conversation by looking at how discourses affect non-binary people’s access to gender-affirming healthcare. While medical providers use a dominant discourse on trans people to regulate non-binary people’s bodies, non-binary people internalize these same discourses to either delay their own care. Online, non-binary people discuss among one another to inform themselves of their options. As they gather more information, they become more willing to …

What Do You Mean I Got A D+? Effects Of Feedback Type And Quality On Academic Performance, Metacognition, And Motivation In High School Students, Daisuke Katsumata Apr 2018

What Do You Mean I Got A D+? Effects Of Feedback Type And Quality On Academic Performance, Metacognition, And Motivation In High School Students, Daisuke Katsumata

Senior Theses and Projects

Numerous studies have established that feedback is among the most effective ways to improve student achievement. However, not all studies have defined feedback in the same way, so the effectiveness of feedback has depended on how it has been defined and the context in which it was provided (Hattie & Timperely, 2007). This study investigated the effects of a feedback intervention on student academic performance, metacognition, and motivation. The students in the study came from two sections of a high school world history class at an inter-district magnet school in Hartford, Connecticut. All feedback was provided by the same teacher …

College Women's Interest In An Over-The-Counter Oral Contraceptive, Haley Dougherty Apr 2018

College Women's Interest In An Over-The-Counter Oral Contraceptive, Haley Dougherty

Senior Theses and Projects

The purpose of this thesis was to learn whether an over-the-counter (OTC) oral contraceptive pill would benefit college students. To find out, I conducted sixteen semi-structured interviews with college students from Trinity College and Capital Community College, both located in Hartford, Connecticut. All participants either currently took oral contraceptives or had taken them in the past. This thesis accepts as its premise that oral contraceptives should be available OTC, but as a policy solution to increase access, I found that an OTC pill would have a limited effect.
