The Building And Establishment Of Washington, 1788-1809, Robert C. Harris
Masters Theses
Preface
The following research concerns the beginnings of our national capital. Of the people who have contributed to its development, many were Americans, while others were immigrants striving for freedom in their newly established nation. To all the most important task was to find a permanent site for their national capital.
Millions of Americans have visited Washington, D. C. since 1800, leaving their beloved city with diversified ideals for its future. Dr. H. Paul Caemmerer has several quotations from famous American personalities regarding the national capital.
The Social And Economic Background Of Goldsmith's Deserted Village, James R. Gray
The Social And Economic Background Of Goldsmith's Deserted Village, James R. Gray
Masters Theses
On May 26, 1770, Oliver Goldsmith's Deserted Village was published. This poem, which has been subjected to repeated attacks by those who claim that it contains more sentimentality than sense, is Goldsmith's best known, most often quoted, and most highly regarded work. Even when the poem is considered alongside such other familiar Goldsmith works as The Traveller (1784), The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), and She Stoops to Conquer (1773), it remains the single achievement that did more to enhance Goldsmith's reputation than all his other works combined. The poem's central argument is that the accumulation of wealth in England's middle …

Introduction
The face of England changed dramatically during the 19th century. Railway tracks seemed her agrarian greenness, mines pocked her highlands and the smoke-belching blemishes of Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham bulged into ugly prominence in her misdirection, casting a sooty pall that boded no good for her aristocratic tradition.

Masters Theses
Introduction
Purpose
The Victorian Age of English history produced many great political leaders. Among the best known are Chamberlain, Disreali, Palmerston, Salisbury, and Gladstone. These politicians were able to pacify many dissatisfied groups and produce many reforms. Yet one of the biggest problems they had to face was left unsolved throughout the Victorian period, and the later Edwardian period as well. This problem was Ireland.
This research project will deal with the man who made one of the most persistent efforts of the nineteenth century to solve the Irish problem. It will attempt to show how William Ewart Gladstone become …

By using the results of such a study, the institution can keep its program in step with the best educational theory and practice.

An Analysis Of The Bassoon And Its Literature, Larry Charles Mettler
Masters Theses
The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of bassoon literature. Special emphasis is given to the use of the bassoon in orchestral literature, from the seventeenth century when the bassoon merely doubled the bass part to its increased importance in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, when the bassoon was used as added color in the woodwind choir and orchestra and as a solo instrument. Before beginning the analysis of the bassoon part within orchestral literature, a brief historical account of the development of the bassoon is presented. The invention and improvements of the bassoon have a …

The history of the area has been studied, many of the leading characters have been interviewed personally, and a large amount of reading has been done in the records relating ot the events. Although greater emphasis has been placed upon those aspects of the case which were purely local, a number of larger factors contributing to its background and meaning have been presented briefly.

Hymnody In The Liturgical Aspects Of Worship, Philip Steen
Hymnody In The Liturgical Aspects Of Worship, Philip Steen
Masters Theses
The main purpose of this study was concerned with the relationship of hymns to services in the church. The author sought to answer the question, "What are the hymns that should be used for a certain service in the Church Year?” This would have to be explained from both a theological and musical viewpoint. In order to answer this question, it was necessary to include four minor areas of study (1) the history and use or hymns and hymn tunes, {2) the history and use of the Liturgical Year, (3) the elements that determine a good hymn and (4) the …
