The Pacific Northwest has frequently been categorized as the least churched and least religious section of the country. And in general, most historians have accepted the notion that religion played a comparatively minor role in the development of urban life in the region. Nevertheless, during the winter of 1908-1909, as many as 35,000 people a day gathered in downtown Spokane to hear Billy Sunday preach the gospel.
