How Can Jesus Save Women: Three Theories On Christ's Atonement, Reta Halteman Finger

Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship

In the early 1970s, a group of six evangelical women in Chicago began meeting. Their topic of conversation? The emerging secular movement of feminism and what it might mean in a Christian context. These discussions would eventually lead to the Daughters of Sarah, a mid-20th century American journal for the particular audience of Christian feminists. Reform And Democracy: British And American Reactions To The French Revolution, 1789-1801, Martha Lingua Wheless

Riley’S Empire: Northwestern Bible School And Fundamentalism In The Upper Midwest, William Vance Trollinger Jun 1988

Riley’S Empire: Northwestern Bible School And Fundamentalism In The Upper Midwest, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

In the 1920s a loosely-united band of militant conservatives launched a crusade to capture control of the major Protestant denominations. These fundamentalists staunchly affirmed the supernaturalness and literal accuracy of the Bible, the supernatural character of Christ, and the necessity of Christians to separate themselves from the world.

And in general, most historians have accepted the notion that religion played a comparatively minor role in the development of urban life in the region. Nevertheless, during the winter of 1908-1909, as many as 35,000 people a day gathered in downtown Spokane to hear Billy Sunday preach the gospel.
