Maritial Matters, Rowan Cahill
Maritial Matters, Rowan Cahill
Rowan Cahill
Between 2006-2009, Rowan Cahill published a number of commentaries relating to the Anzac tradition, and to the Australian martial tradition generally, on the Leftwrites experiment in progressive group blogging. A selection of these commentaries follows; they represent views of the Australian martial experience at radical odds with mainstream Australian histories. The issues raised are still relevant, especially as the Australian government is currently spending its way through millions of dollars as it prepares to commemorate/celebrate the centenary of the Gallipoli landing (2015). Leftwrites is archived in the Pandora web archive of the National Library of Australia.

MARRYING OUT: a documentary radio series about mixed marriage and religious bigotry: 2 x 55mins A woman is denied a deathbed visit to her father. A couple’s honeymoon vehicle is sabotaged. A man is cut out of three wills. Children practise their faith in secret. A quarter of the population is barred from applying for jobs. The cause: religion. The place: Australia. The time: until the 1960s. Just two generations ago, before multiculturalism was the norm, Australian society was polarised between two groups: Protestants and Catholics. Religion was code for identity, with tensions fuelled by historical grievances that dated back …

The Affective Power Of Sound: Oral History On Radio, Siobhan A. Mchugh
Siobhan McHugh
Using illustrative audio clips, this article offers insights into the historical symbiosis between oral history and radio and the relationship between orality, aurality, and affect that makes radio such a powerful medium for the spoken word. It does so through a discussion of the concept of affect as it applies to oral history on radio and through a description and analysis of crafting oral history for the radio documentary form. This article features audio excerpts from radio documentaries produced by the author. Listening to the audio portions of this article requires a means of accessing the audio excerpts through hyperlinks. …
Islands Of Multilingual Literature: Community Magazines And Australia’S Many Languages, Michael R. Jacklin
Islands Of Multilingual Literature: Community Magazines And Australia’S Many Languages, Michael R. Jacklin

Australian literary studies has for some decades recognised the significance and contribution of multicultural writers to the national literary landscape; however, it has shown less interest in the multilingual nature of much of this writing. This article brings into focus a number of Australian magazines in which multilingual literature has been promoted, from the 1920s Brisbane publication The Muses Magazine, to the 1990s multicultural, multilingual women’s magazine Ambitious Friends, which featured creative work in Arabic, Lao, Spanish and Vietnamese. Further illustrations, specific to Vietnamese Australian writing, will be provided from Integration: The Magazine for Vietnamese and Multicultural Issues, published in …

Critique Of The Discourse Of Authentic Leadership, Rita A. Gardiner Ms
Rita A Gardiner
This article considers the new management discourse of authentic leadership is deeply problematic because it fails to take into account how social and historical circumstances affect a person’s ability to be a leader. It examines some of the arguments made by proponents of authentic leadership theory, and contrasts these claims about authenticity with Hannah Arendt’s concept of uniqueness, as well as considering Heidegger’s notion of authenticity as resoluteness. It also looks at the ways in which authentic leadership fails to address issues related to power and privilege by looking specifically at how silence operates. The author argues that it is …

The three case studies involve intercultural conflict between migrants and the host society, but also conflicts between migrants of different origin or culture, and intra-communal conflict. These conflicts occur in digital networks and are influencing and are influenced by what is called here by the different research teams interchangeably as ‘real’, ‘offline’, ‘material’ or ‘physical’. Nevertheless, the intention of the research design and philosophical standpoint is to integrate virtuality and materiality as far as this is possible in the analysis. In Cyprus, urban spaces are contested by migrant and anti-migrant groups and played on-line and off-line in an interplay that …

"For A Single Lady To Travel": Geographic Mobility And Female Independence In Leonora Sansay's Secret History And Laura, Sarah E. Thompson
"For A Single Lady To Travel": Geographic Mobility And Female Independence In Leonora Sansay's Secret History And Laura, Sarah E. Thompson
Sarah E. Thompson
In contrasting the comparative success of the worldlier, more sophisticated Clara and Mary in Secret History with the pathetic fate of the eponymous protagonist in Laura, Sansay presents geographic mobility as an essential facet in the successful development of individual female agency for the women of Early America. Although Sansay does not wholly reject the values associated with a traditional feminine role, particularly in regards to concerns about sexual morality, Sansay ultimately creates in Laura and Secret History a world in which the more experience a woman has, the better equipped she is to respond to the inequalities of power …
Spirit Injury And Feminism: Expanding The Discussion, Nick J. Sciullo
Spirit Injury And Feminism: Expanding The Discussion, Nick J. Sciullo
Nick J. Sciullo
To discuss spirit injury, it is at first necessary to articulate a space in the theoretical diaspora to conceptualize spirit injury as a concept deeply tied to the historical tradition of several theoretical frameworks. “Spirit injury” is a phrase popularized by critical race feminist Adrien Katherine Wing. It is a term utilized in critical race feminism (CRF) that brings together insights from critical legal studies (CLS) and critical race theory (CRT). Wing’s training is as a lawyer and legal scholar, not as a communication scholar, yet her work may help communication scholars more keenly theorize harm and violence. Her scholarship …

Narratives Serially Constructed And Lived: Ethnicity In Cross-Gender Strikes 1887-1903, Ileen A. Devault
Ileen A DeVault
[Excerpt] The strikes narrated in this paper have illustrated different ways in which individuals' recognition of ethnic identity could interact with their recognition of gender and class identities. In each strike workers' identities developed along with the serial narrative of the particular strike situation. The use of Sartre's concept of the series helps us think about the many possible variations of class, ethnicity, and gender. Though Sartre planned to use his concept of series as a way to examine peoples' class identities, my employment of the concept broadens it to include other categories of identification as well. Using the concept …

Willa Cather As Equivocal Icon, Guy J. Reynolds
Guy J Reynolds
All icons are ultimately equivocal: you can’t think of an icon without thinking about iconoclasm. Iconicity is a function of place. Cather turned the creation of icons, and the sceptical deconstruction of icons, into a form of narrative quest that could animate a whole fiction. After Cather’s death, her coterie, Midwesterners who had come East, were faced with what to make of an iconic heartlands figure who had moved to this re¬gion. Cather’s status as Midwestern icon became, after her death, a subject of struggle among E.K Brown, his widow Peggy Brown, Dorothy Canfield, Edith Lewis, Alfred Knopf, Leon Edel, …

My “Country” Lies Over The Ocean: Seasteading And Polycentric Law, Allen P. Mendenhall
My “Country” Lies Over The Ocean: Seasteading And Polycentric Law, Allen P. Mendenhall
Allen Mendenhall
This essay considers the implications of the Seasteading Institute upon notions of law and sovereignty and argues that seasteading could make possible the implementation or ordering of polycentric legal systems while providing evidence for the viability of private-property anarchism or anarchocapitalism, at least in their nascent forms. This essay follows in the wake of Edward P. Stringham’s edition Anarchy and the Law and treats seasteading and polycentric law as concrete realities that lend credence to certain anarchist theories. Polycentric law in particular allows for institutional diversity that enables a multiplicity of rules to coexist and even compete in the open …

ALBERTO DOMINGUEZ identified himself as un Australiano de habla hispana - a Spanish-speaking Australian. As such, he gave enormously to the Spanish-speaking community of Sydney. Dominguez was a radio broadcaster with SBS and community radio stations in western Sydney, and a founding member of several Latin American cultural organisations. For many Spanish-speaking Australians who came as refugees from Latin America, Dominguez's radio-voice provided them with essential information and helped them settle in. Yet when he died as a passenger aboard American Airlines flight 11, which struck the northern tower of the World Trade Centre in September 2001, most media in …

In Search Of America, Ellen Bigler
Ellen Bigler
Taken collectively, Latinos are now the largest minority group in the USA. This chapter, with a focus on U.S. Latinos, explores the changing face of the USA in recent decades and the significance of this demographic change for the ongoing construction and negotiation of an American identity. The culture wars (e.g., debates over the canon, curriculum, and language) of the late 1980s and 1990s, and the contested role of schools in the arena of critical multiculturalism, are examined for insights into the bases of resistance to change. The author draws from her experiences in public schools as both a teacher …

Homing In On Paradigm Shift: Ryanair Leadership In The Age Of Expensive Air Trave, Uzoechi Nwagbara
Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara
This investigation borders on a critical evaluation of the leadership style of Ryanair in the age of expensive air travel. Another thrust of the paper is a critical look at the organizational model in place at Ryanair which has made it one of the world’s most successful airlines. In doing this we shall be exploring the leadership model and paradigms as well as leadership style that Michael O’Leary, the CEO of this airline has brought to bear in the organization, which have made it an airline of choice in Europe. Also, the study will be evaluating the transformational change occasioned …
'Mass Of Madness': Jurisprudence In E.M. Forster's A Passage To India, Allen P. Mendenhall
'Mass Of Madness': Jurisprudence In E.M. Forster's A Passage To India, Allen P. Mendenhall
Allen Mendenhall
Law-and-literature scholars have paid scant attention to E. M. Forster’s oeuvre, which abounds in legal information and which situates itself in a unique jurisprudential context. Of all his novels, A Passage to India (1924) interrogates the law most rigorously, especially as it implicates massive programs of ‘liberal’ imperialism and ‘humanitarian’ intervention, as well as less grand but equally dubious legal apparatuses – jail, bail, discovery, courtrooms – that police and pervert Chandrapore, the fictional Indian city in which the novel is set. The study of law in Anglo-India is particularly telling, if troubling, because India served as ‘a model for …
