Tatyana Markus: Hero Of Ukraine, Ariana L. Martineau Apr 2018

Tatyana Markus: Hero Of Ukraine, Ariana L. Martineau

Honors Projects

A dramatized telling of the story of Tatyana Markus, a young Jewish resistance fighter from Kiev, Ukraine. Under a false identity, she personally killed dozens of Nazis during WWII. Along the way she lost many people she cared about until she was captured herself. Tatyana has gone on virtually unknown throughout the world, so this play is an effort to spread word about this brave, amazing girl who was only in her early 20s. I think the themes are very relatable to today's society with the struggle of whether to stand up to injustice, or stand by. Especially since she …

A Hostile Neighbor: A Historical Analysis Of The Problematization Of Muslim Migration To Spain Department/Degree: Department Of Modern Languages And Literatures, Ellen Grove

Honors Projects

Since the death of fascist dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, Spain has witnessed one of the greatest explosions in its real population in the nation’s history, brought about by extensive migrations from Africa and the Middle East. The increasing presence of immigrants, particularly from predominantly Muslim-countries, has forced Spain to reflect on its own idiosyncratic past of coexistence and violent exclusion between Catholics and Muslims. This exposition investigates how Spain’s unique history has produced a confusing atmosphere for Muslim migrants, who profess a deep kinship towards the country, but who are systematically marginalized by Spanish immigration law.

Music As The Architect For Speech And Language: A Systematic Review, Savannah Vance May 2017

Music As The Architect For Speech And Language: A Systematic Review, Savannah Vance

Honors Projects

It is hypothesized that before the complexity of speech and language developed, much of human communication was based on basic forms similar to music and gesture (Hamilton, 2010). Differences in pitch and tone in conjunction with expressive gestures were used in conveying excitement, fear, danger, or happiness. Today, music is used as a way to express emotions when spoken words are just not enough. As a result, many have begun to see the significant relationship between the use of music and language in human development as a whole. Specifically, some speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are learning to accept music in speech …

I Presume You Have Heard Of Dr. Livingstone, Mary Eakins

Honors Projects

David Livingstone is perhaps one of the most famous missionaries of the nineteenth century. During the mid-1800’s he captivated the imaginations of the western world with his achievements and explorations in Africa- his walk across the continent, the infamous meeting with Mr. Stanley, and his grand funeral leading to his burial in Westminster Abbey. During his lifetime he was an explorer, an anthropologist, a botanist, a geographer, a cartographer, a doctor, and most importantly in his eyes, a missionary to the unreached people of Africa.

Phragmites Australis Haplotypes Present In Two Populations On San Salvador Island, Bahamas, Skylar Thompson

Honors Projects

Phragmites australis, common reed, is an invasive species present throughout North America. It is also found on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. The spread of Phragmites is a serious issue for the health and biodiversity of wetland habitats throughout the world, but invasive haplotypes are threatening such communities as they choke out other species, including native Phragmites. This study sought to discover the Phragmites australis haplotypes present on San Salvador Island, and consequently determine the risk of invasion for the island wetlands. Of the 10 samples from two separate sites that were taken, all were the Gulf Coast (I) …

Walking The Land: Exploring The Geographical, Cultural, & Historical Context Of The Bible, Sarah Veldman

Honors Projects

The history of the land of Israel is not much different from that of any other modern nation, besides the fact that it is the location for the majority of the events that are recorded in the most popular book in the world. In the United States alone, 88% of households own at least one Bible. In fact, most homes own closer to four copies of the book. The most well known and referred to book in the world is a compilation of stories that start at the creation of the world and continue through prophecies of the end of …

Does Materialism Predict Body Hair Removal Among Undergraduate Males And Females?, Brianna Ballew Apr 2016

Does Materialism Predict Body Hair Removal Among Undergraduate Males And Females?, Brianna Ballew

Honors Projects

Previous research indicates that materialistic women are more likely to want to alter their bodies (Henderson-King & Brooks, 2009). This study focuses specifically on the relationship between materialism and body hair removal. We collected information about the frequency of body hair removal, reasons for hair removal, and materialism (Richins & Dawson, 1992). Findings indicate that males and females do not significantly differ on materialist values. Correlational analyses reveal that for women, materialism is related to frequency of hair removal for several body sites; for men, however, materialism was related to body hair removal for only a single site. Qualitative analyses …

Project Summary And Developmental Programs For Ishew, Lindsey Lequia, Dallas Rohraff

Honors Projects

On a seemingly normal day during my study abroad in Ghana, we noticed that the sun was shining in a sky that seemed to have no clouds. We were taking a trip to visit the water source of a community that contained nearly 1,000 people. Although it amazed us to think that that many people were fetching water each day from a river, we understood that others do not have access to the purified, city water that we are fortunate to have at home. When we pulled into the community, the reality of their lifestyle contrasted with what we had …

Habermas And The Problems Of Translating Religious Speech, Chad Karsten Dec 2015

Habermas And The Problems Of Translating Religious Speech, Chad Karsten

Honors Projects

Contrary to the predictions of secular philosophers for the past several centuries, religion remains alive and well. In fact, in the past several decades, especially in the United States, the role of religion in politics has grown immensely. For the political philosopher Jürgen Habermas this poses a problem. How can a state remain neutral to competing worldviews, religions included, whilst respecting the equal rights of religious citizens to view themselves as authors of the laws that bind them? Habermas believes that religion is an important and useful force in postsecular democracy and as such must be given a chance to …

One aspect of the Holocaust that has a great deal of information to look at is the medical implications. This could be looking at the actual medicine that occurred in the concentration camps, including medical experiments, to the SS men and prisoners that were appointed as doctors in the camps, to so much more. This paper will focus on the doctors that worked in the concentration camps, both SS men and prisoners. First, SS doctors will be …
