Why Should Educators Care About Argumentation?, Harvey Siegel Jan 1995

Why Should Educators Care About Argumentation?, Harvey Siegel

Philosophy Articles and Papers

Educators who are reflective about their educational endeavours ask themselves questions like: What is the aim of education? What moral, methodological, or other constraints govern our educational activities and efforts? One natural place to look for answers is in the philosophy of education, which (among other things) tries to provide systematic answers to these questions. One general answer offered by the philosophy of education is that the aim of education consists in fostering the development of students' rationality. On this view, education has as its fundamental task both the development of students' reasoning ability, and also the fostering of a …

Queen Anne's Lace, Patricia Z. Cowden Jan 1995

Queen Anne's Lace, Patricia Z. Cowden

Intertext

This paper, an assignment for Chris Madden's Writing 105 Class, asked us to write about a time or event which caused us to change our minds about something important to us. I thought that there couldn't be a better change for me to write about than the one that seemed to be culminating at that moment. We were asked to explain and contextualize our original belief, identify how our ideas had changed, and account for the process of re-thinking. Writing Queen Anne's Lace was quite a release, and the experience has left me fascinated with the power of writing to …

Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt Jan 1995

Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt

The Bridge

In the 1995-96 academic year Grand View College will

celebrate its first hundred years of life. In anticipation of

this milestone, suggestions have been made to designate

1994-95 the "Year of Grundtvig," and to formally observe

with the entire Grand View community the influence of

the great Dane upon the college and its educational philosophy.

What, after all, could be more fitting for a college

whose most recent Academic Mission Statement proudly

declares its founding "by Danish immigrants who sought

to give the educational vision and ideals of N.F.S.

Grundtvig an institutional presence?"

Paired Reading : An Investigation Into Using Parents As Tutors In One Mainstream High School, Miguel R. Fernandez

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Contemporary research on reading has investigated the use of parents and peer tutors in assisting schools to improve reading accuracy and comprehension. Of these techniques, Direct Instruction and Paired Reading have been shown to be the most effective programs using parents within the primary school setting. However, many studies in Paired Reading research have lacked experimental data using parents as tutors in high schools. The aim of this paper was to assess the impact of Paired …
