The Danger Of Visual Seduction: Netherlandish Prints Of Susanna And The Elders, Susan Dackerman
The Danger Of Visual Seduction: Netherlandish Prints Of Susanna And The Elders, Susan Dackerman
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
In 1563, the Council of Trent issued a decree which stated, "...all lasciviousness is to be avoided, so that images shall not be painted and adorned with seductive charm." In the wake of this mandate, and other Netherlandish mandates intended to bolster the Council's decrees, prints of the biblical heroine Susanna proliferated in the Low Countries. The majority of these engravings, etchings, and woodcuts portray the attempted seduction of a provocative female nude by two old men, a scene which explicitly manifests "lasciviousness" and "seductive charm." This dissertation examines why these erotically charged prints of Susanna and the Elders flourished …
A Series Of Sermons And Growth Experiences In Marital Covenant Love Relationships In The Ottawa East Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Vaudré Pierre Jacques
A Series Of Sermons And Growth Experiences In Marital Covenant Love Relationships In The Ottawa East Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Vaudré Pierre Jacques
Professional Dissertations DMin
Problem
In my interactions with my church members or more precisely with married couples, I have become aware of their idiosyncrasies in the realm of marital conflicts. It is hoped that this project will help to salvage marriages. However, this project is written from a preventive stance.
Method
In this project, a theological basis for marital covenant relationship was developed. Second, a series of five sermons and five growth seminars were conducted with some married couples and persons contemplating marriage. Third, pre- and post-questionnaires were distributed in order to assess the understanding of what is being discussed.

Tune In The Bible: A Computer-Based Adult-Learning System, Bradford C. Newton
Tune In The Bible: A Computer-Based Adult-Learning System, Bradford C. Newton
Professional Dissertations DMin
Computers have been utilized in virtually every arena of American society to convey information and to educate. This project was designed to investigate the adult-learning literature and then produce a computer-based Bible study program that would interest and motivate the user to further investigation of the Bible's contents and message. The adult-learning literature survey yielded significant principles that were applied to the formulation of scripts and storyboards for a computer learning system called "Tune in the Bible." This computer program was produced using the IBM development software, "Linkway Live!"
Twelve participants were engaged to review and evaluate the content, effectiveness, …
Enlisting Volunteers In Ministry, Jerry Louis Fore
Enlisting Volunteers In Ministry, Jerry Louis Fore
Professional Dissertations DMin
Problem
Involving church members in ministry annually challenges church leaders. To meet this demand within the Seventh-day Adventist church, a committee typically nominates church members to fill prescribed offices—places of need. Filling offices, however, too often causes a committee to overlook some people or to mismatch interests, talents, and tasks.
Method
While serving the Kansas City Central Church as senior pastor, I introduced a Bible-based process to involve members' gifts and talents in ministry. Using trained interviewers in this one-year pilot project, members became involved after matching their talents and interests with tasks. After the church approved the project, I …
Diners In America : An Evolutionary Process, Jill Gardner
Diners In America : An Evolutionary Process, Jill Gardner
Honors Theses
A diner is now, as it has always been, a restful spot. It is a restful spot that is currently branching out into chains to capitalize on this same sentiment all over the nation. It focuses on the caricature like qualities that people recognize in a diner. People are willing to pay a little more, not much more, but a little more, to get away from McDonald's. These restaurants have been built with old memories but with new conveniences and some new menus. Finally, with health food on the march, I have to ask--where else can you eat a big …
A Taxonomy Of Types Of Uncertainty, Byrne Elliot Lovell
A Taxonomy Of Types Of Uncertainty, Byrne Elliot Lovell
Dissertations and Theses
This study considers an expanded meaning of "uncertainty" as it affects decision-makers. The definition adopted is based on a decision-maker who is uncertain, i.e. aware of the insufficiency of her knowledge for the purpose of rationally determining which option to choose. A taxonomy of uncertainties is developed from this definition. The first stage is a Generalized Decision Model, which expands on a standard decision model often assumed in technical works by allowing uncertainty over components of the model that are assumed to be perfectly known in the standard model. These additional potential "subjects" of uncertainty include the feasibility of options, …
The Woman In The Dock Is A Monster: An Investigation Of Female Criminality In The Hearings Of The Perth Supreme Court, 1890-1914, Debra A. Fletcher
The Woman In The Dock Is A Monster: An Investigation Of Female Criminality In The Hearings Of The Perth Supreme Court, 1890-1914, Debra A. Fletcher
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Published scholarly works on female criminal activity are limited both by their meagreness and lack of supporting empirical basis, being grounded in stereotypes and assumptions. Accurate studies based on the collection and analysis of data are required to address this paucity and to provide an historical for contemporary studies. It is, however, an accepted fact that historically women commit significantly less crimes than men and their criminal activity is generally of a far less violent nature. However, when women do physically harm others, the act most often involves family members and utilises domestic tools in the commission of the crimes. …
Paired Reading : An Investigation Into Using Parents As Tutors In One Mainstream High School, Miguel R. Fernandez
Paired Reading : An Investigation Into Using Parents As Tutors In One Mainstream High School, Miguel R. Fernandez
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Contemporary research on reading has investigated the use of parents and peer tutors in assisting schools to improve reading accuracy and comprehension. Some of the techniques that have been used are Hearing Reading, Paired Reading, Shared Reading, Relaxed Reading, Pause, Prompt and Praise and Direct Instruction. Of these techniques, Direct Instruction and Paired Reading have been shown to be the most effective programs using parents within the primary school setting. However, many studies in Paired Reading research have lacked experimental data using parents as tutors in high schools. The aim of this paper was to assess the impact of Paired …
A Comparison Between The Theological Approach Of The 1992 Australian Catholic Bishops' Statement On The Distribution Of Wealth In Australia, Common Wealth For The Common Good, And Some Selected Theological Types, Eamon Murray
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The Bishops of the Australian Catholic Church have been issuing annual statements on political, economic and social issues since 1940. The focus of this thesis, the 1992 Bishops' Statement, Common Wealth for the Common Good, has as its main theme the distribution of wealth in Australia. It is the culmination of a five year process of consultation and drafting by the Bishops' Committee for Justice, Development and Peace (BCJDP), under the direction of its Executive Secretary, Dr Michael Costigan. This thesis attempts to identify the theological approach, or perhaps approaches. of the Bishops' Statement by comparing it to five selected …
The Influence Of Primary School Music Programmes On Student Choice Of Music Studies In Lower Secondary Schools, Beverley Pascoe
The Influence Of Primary School Music Programmes On Student Choice Of Music Studies In Lower Secondary Schools, Beverley Pascoe
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The omnipresence of music in today's adolescent society in Australia is evidenced by the fact that adolescents, almost without exception, listen to and enjoy music throughout most of their leisure time, and indeed, much of their study time. A large portion of their financial resources is spent on music and its associated promotional material. It could be said that music plays a major part in their sub-culture and their lives. According to Davey (1991, p.ll), "Music is an addiction in our culture" and "the Walkman and ghetto blaster assure access wherever and whenever we choose." The obvious fulfilment and satisfaction …
The Parliamentary Career Of Michael Thomas Sadler, 1829-1833, Simon P. Karginoff
The Parliamentary Career Of Michael Thomas Sadler, 1829-1833, Simon P. Karginoff
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The thesis seeks to combine an historiographical reappraisal of Michael Thomas Sadler, 1780-1835, with an account of his political thought and actions during his parliamentary career, 1829-1833. Sadler was an Ultra-Tory, although he has also been called a Radical Tory. Central to Ultra-Tory philosophy was the defence of the Revolution Settlement, or Protestant Constitution. This thesis opens with an explanation as to why Sadler was chosen as a research subject. Section one gives a general background to Sadler. The thesis begins with a brief biographical sketch followed by a detailed historiographical assessment. Sadler’s basic philosophy is outlined and his opposition …
Science On Television : A Representational Site For Mediating Ideology, Helen C. Singleton
Science On Television : A Representational Site For Mediating Ideology, Helen C. Singleton
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The emergence of a new science paradigm has been identified. It is characteristically described as structuring an organic, holistic and ecological framework for understanding the nature of reality. The modern scientific paradigm with its characteristic underlying inorganic, reductive, and mechanistic vision of reality, discursively dominates Western societies' cultural sense-making with its attempts to unlock the 'mysteries' of nature. The radically different characteristics of the new paradigm science is linked to 'rising culture' articulated in the exploratory social change of alternative social movements. The holistic principles and ecological values found variously in the environment, feminist, and new age/holistic health, peace and …
Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Opera Sappho, A Critical Examination, Fiona Campbell
Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Opera Sappho, A Critical Examination, Fiona Campbell
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Over the past ten years there has been a considerable amount of renewed interest in the life and work of Australian-born composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks who wrote five operas and a substantial body of chamber music. Although most of her career as a composer was accomplished abroad, her works were a significant contribution to the development of Australian opera. There is a growing body of literature written about Peggy Glanville-Hicks, but nothing substantial has been written about her last great work, Sappho. The purpose of this minor thesis, therefore, is to examine this last grand, yet unperformed opera. This thesis will …
An Analysis Of The Social Profile Of The Kilfoyles Of Rosewood Station, Geraldine Byrne
An Analysis Of The Social Profile Of The Kilfoyles Of Rosewood Station, Geraldine Byrne
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Thomas Kilfoyle (1842-1908) participated in the 1883-1885 overlanding expedition from Queensland to the newly opened Kimberley district. There he became one of the founders of Rosewood Station, a property which under the guidance of Kilfoyle and son Jack (1893-1962) became an outstanding example of successful owner/management of a north Australian beef cattle station. Among the objectives of this thesis it is important to identify the major features in the Kilfoyles' management policies which enabled them to survive environmental and economic changes which brought many of their neighbours into financial difficulty. An important element was their successful management of Aboriginal labour, …
Mary Mccarthy, Mary Gordon, And The Irish-American Literary Tradition, Stacey Lee Donohue
Mary Mccarthy, Mary Gordon, And The Irish-American Literary Tradition, Stacey Lee Donohue
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
There is a distinct literary canon in the United States, composed of Irish-Catholic-American writers, which requires different modes of criticism or evaluation than other U.S. literatures, particularly the dominant, largely Protestant or Protestant-influenced, American literary canon. In addition, as a recently recognized literary tradition, many women writers have either been ignored or unnoticed because their works do not immediately fit into the evolving criteria of evaluation for the Irish-American literary tradition. My purpose in this study is not to survey the Irish-American literary canon, but to examine two women writers who have not always been admitted to an innately misogynistic …
From Idyll To Exile: The Transformed Self In The Early Works Of Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, Elizabeth Powers
From Idyll To Exile: The Transformed Self In The Early Works Of Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, Elizabeth Powers
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines works of Goethe's pre-Weimar period and his autobiography, Dichtung und Wahrheit, which reconstructs that early period as the emergence of poet and oeuvre in terms of the abandonment of the idyll. It disputes the traditional view of Goethe as the poet of experience ("Erlebnis"). It seeks instead to demonstrate that Goethe wrote in the manner of his poetic forebears–by the imitation of literary models–and that "experience" was created in his work by emptying these models of their communal content. Once liberated from traditional literary forms, the new subjective lyric voice was literally homeless and its encounters with …
Greater Richmond Community Corps, Elizabeth Devoss
Greater Richmond Community Corps, Elizabeth Devoss
Honors Theses
The Richmond Community Corps was created by Mayor Leonidas B. Young in September 1994, in response to rising crime and violence in the Richmond community and in direct response to recommendations of the report of the Richmond Regional Crime Commission. Mayor Young, a second term council member, newly elected mayor and pastor in one of Richmond's most crime ridden areas, believes that crime and violence in our neighborhood's can be greatly affected if greater numbers of citizens get involved in making their communities safer places to live. As originally envisioned by Mayor Young, the Richmond Community Corps, would provide citizens …
Descriptive Case Studies Of The Socialization And Acculturation Of Two Mentored First-Year Elementary Teachers Within The Seventh-Day Adventist School System, Carole B. Smith
Dissertations
Problem. A qualitative design was employed in this study to: (1) investigate the experiences and perceptions of two first-year elementary teachers within the Seventh-day Adventist educational system, (2) gain a better understanding of new teachers’ socialization and acculturation during their first year of teaching, and (3) use beginning teacher concerns gleaned from this study and previous studies to identify the kinds of support that need to be offered in a new teacher induction program within the Adventist educational system.
Method. I studied two first-year teachers, employed full-time at the elementary level by Scenic Vista Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Qualitative data …
Mediating Contexts In Trans-Generational Faith Transmission : A Qualitative Study, David John Mcclintock
Mediating Contexts In Trans-Generational Faith Transmission : A Qualitative Study, David John Mcclintock
Dissertations
Problem. This descriptive study explored the experience of faith transmission across generations in order to seek to identify the conditions that are intrinsic to successful faith transmission, and conversely, the conditions that my lead to a rejection of faith in Jesus Christ.
Method. Diads were chosen purposively so that the diads were: (1) known to the interviewer, (2) representative of the convergent or divergent paradigm, (3) residents of Australia, and (4) composed of children between 20-40 years of age. Convergent diads were defined as diads in which all in the diad when interviewed were members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. …
The Book Of Joshua: Its Theme And Use In Discussions Of The Israelite Conquest And Settlement And The Relationship Of Archaeology And The Bible, David Merling Sr.
The Book Of Joshua: Its Theme And Use In Discussions Of The Israelite Conquest And Settlement And The Relationship Of Archaeology And The Bible, David Merling Sr.
Dissertations
Problem. It has been suggested that the biblical account of the Israelite conquest of Canaan and the archaeological data are incompatible. This study evaluates the five main Israelite settlement theories and reevaluates the Book of Joshua as it relates to archaeology.
Method. Chapter 1 surveys the five archaeological theories of the Israelite emergence in Canaan. Chapter 2 critiques each theory. Chapter 3 examines the Book of Joshua from an archaeological and thematic perspective. Chapter 4 highlights presuppositions that have been brought to the archaeological data and the Book of Joshua. Chapter 5 uses the discussions of chapters 2, 3, and …
The Soteriology Of Ellen G. White Compared With The Lutheran Formula Of Concord: A Study Of The Adventist Doctrine Of The Final Judgment Of The Saints And Their Justification Before God, Gunnar Pedersen
Dissertations
The topic. The Adventist doctrine of judgment is part of a larger salvation-historical perspective that in Adventist theology is termed the Sanctuary Doctrine. This doctrine depicts the post-ascension soteriological work of Christ as reaching its consummation in the judgment and the parousia. Critics of the Adventist doctrine of judgment consider it perplexing and even incompatible with the basic principles undergirding the classical Protestant doctrine on forensic justification, understood as a present, complete reception and possession of salvation both existentially and forensically.
The purpose. This study aimed at investigating to what degree theclassical Protestant principles of grace alone, Christ alone, and …
Change In Seventh-Day Adventist Theology: A Study Of The Problem Of Doctrinal Development, Rolf J. Pöhler
Change In Seventh-Day Adventist Theology: A Study Of The Problem Of Doctrinal Development, Rolf J. Pöhler
Dissertations
Problem. Like other churches, Seventh-day Adventists face the challenge of harmonizing the essential immutability of revelation in Christ and what seem to be significant doctrinal modifications. This study provides the first in-depth treatment of the intricate problem of doctrinal development from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective.
Method. Chapter 1 defines the problem, chapter 2 offers a historical-genetic survey of proposed solutions, while chapter 3 presents a systematic-typological analysis of possible responses to doctrinal change in Christian theology.
Chapter 4 investigates the extent, nature, and direction of Seventh-day Adventist doctrinal developments in the light of the religious background of the church and …
The Background And Meaning Of The Sealed Book Of Revelation 5, Ranko Stefanović
The Background And Meaning Of The Sealed Book Of Revelation 5, Ranko Stefanović
Dissertations
The primary task of this study was to determine the background of the sealed βιβλίον of Rev 5 and its meaning and significance in its literary context.
The historical survey shows that the interpretation of the sealed βιβλίον has undergone significant modifications in the course of time. The earliest documented Patristic references to Rev 5:1-5 indicate that the early church interpreted the sealed βιβλίον most likely in the context of the exaltation of the resurrected Christ as the eschatological sovereign. From the third century on, however, numerous studies regarding the contents and meaning of the sealed βιβλίον have led to …
The Sanctuary And The Three Angels' Messages 1844-1863: Integrating Factors In The Development Of Seventh-Day Adventist Doctrines, Alberto R. Timm
The Sanctuary And The Three Angels' Messages 1844-1863: Integrating Factors In The Development Of Seventh-Day Adventist Doctrines, Alberto R. Timm
Dissertations
The topic. The concepts of the cleansing of the sanctuary of Daniel 8:14 and the three angels' messages of Revelation 14:6-12 were viewed by Sabbatarian Adventists as the main integrating factors in the development of their doctrinal system.
The purpose. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the chronological development of the Sabbatarian Adventist interpretation of thecleansing of the sanctuary of Daniel 8:14 and the three angels' messages of Revelation 14:6-12 from 1844 to 1863, followed by an investigation across time of the relationship between those two integrating factors and the early Sabbatarian Adventist distinctive doctrines of …
A Descriptive Analysis Of Creation Concepts And Themes In The Book Of Psalms, Gnanamuthu S. Wilson
A Descriptive Analysis Of Creation Concepts And Themes In The Book Of Psalms, Gnanamuthu S. Wilson
Dissertations
This descriptive analysis provides a comprehensive and wholistic view of Creation in the Book of Psalms. It is viewed in the background of the rest of the Creation material found in the Old Testament and the ancient Near Eastern religious records. Hermeneutics and analytic induction have helped to create a synthesis of major concepts and themes about Creation.
After an introductory overview of the three categories of documents (chapter 1), a literature review on the Psalms (chapter 2) analyzes eleven major studies on Creation, then seven studies of individual Psalms, plus five minor studies. None of these provides acomprehensive, wholistic …
