Male And Female He Created Them: Ælfric’S Lives Of Saints And Patristic Theories Of Gender, Rhonda L. Mcdaniel
Male And Female He Created Them: Ælfric’S Lives Of Saints And Patristic Theories Of Gender, Rhonda L. Mcdaniel
Dissertations
My dissertation researches the writings of the four Latin Doctors, Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Gregory the Great, in order to challenge the scholarly stereotype of misogyny and anxiety about women in the writings of these influential figures and, more importantly, to build the cultural foundation upon which to base an interpretation of Ælfric’s portrayals of male and female saints in the Lives of Saints.
Accordingly, in the first chapter I focus on the writings of the Latin Doctors concerning the practice of virginity and on their explications of the Trinity and the Creation and Fall of humankind. I then trace …

Concerto For Marimba And Orchestra, Scott Blasco
Concerto For Marimba And Orchestra, Scott Blasco
Masters Theses
The Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra is a three-movement work in the traditional concerto form. The first movement is roughly Sonata-form, the second movement is in essence a set of variations on two mutually derivative melodies over an almost constant rhythmic motive of five eighth-notes, and the third movement is a short through-composed finale based on a quirky, angular melody. The tonal scheme of the concerto is fairly traditional, in that the outer two movements focus on an 'A' tonal center, while the slower middle movement is based on an 'E' tonality. Quintal, extended and added-tone tertian, and mixed cluster-based …

Ava's New Testament Narratives: "When The Old Law Passed Away", James A. Rushing Jr.
TEAMS Medieval German Texts in Bilingual Editions
Ava is the first woman whose name we know who wrote in German. She wrote her poem - or poems - on the lives of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ sometime early in the twelfth century, no later than 1127. It seems certain that she was a layperson, and her work reflects a level of learning that raises all sorts of interesting questions about the education of the laity, especially the education of lay woman, and about the nature of authorship in the Middle Ages, generally and particularly in medieval Germany.
History As Literature, Graeme Dunphy
History As Literature, Graeme Dunphy
TEAMS Medieval German Texts in Bilingual Editions
This volume presents excerpts and translations of three thirteenth-century South German verse chronicles: Rudolf von Ems's Weltchronik, the anonymous Christherre-Chronik, and the Weltchronik of Jans Enikel. These three works are close in language, in date, and in conception, yet they also differ significantly, representing the perspectives of three distinct sections of medieval society: courtly, monastic, and urban. The excerpts have been chosen from the beginning of Rudolf's chronicle, the middle of the Christherre-Chronik and the end of Enikel, so that taken together they give something of an impression of the chroniclers' arrangement of material in a continuum from …
Steamboat Passenger Ferries In Nineteenth Century London: A Cultural Survey, Jennifer Wohlberg
Steamboat Passenger Ferries In Nineteenth Century London: A Cultural Survey, Jennifer Wohlberg
Masters Theses
Traditionally, steamboats and their history have belonged to the area of antiquarians. Many sources in my bibliography focus on the design and use of the boats and neglect the social and cultural impact the boats had on mid-Victorian London life. Steamboats, however, were an important transportation system in mid-Victorian London, so that a study of steamboats can provide an insight into mid-Victorian times. In this thesis, I will place steamboat design construction and use in the context of the social and cultural worlds of mid-Victorian London and the River Thames.
The results of my research yielded a thesis describing the …

The first movement Kite Festival is a traditional Chinese celebration in which people give thanks that the spring is coming. Then the lanterns are displayed on all the city streets.
As The Ruin Falls, Luke Dahn
As The Ruin Falls, Luke Dahn
Masters Theses
As the Ruin Falls is a two-movement work scored for full orchestra, augmented with bass clarinet, piano, and three percussionists. Though the title comes from a poem written by C.S. Lewis, it is in no way is a programmatic representation of the poem's content. Furthermore, the programmatic "scenes" in the second movement do not relate to the poem. The title was selected only to signify the work's rather ominous character.
The primary musical building block for the entire work is a four-note chord whose construction is symmetrical - two minor thirds separated by a perfect fourth: C-Eb-Ab-Cb (or B). The …

From Snakes To Meaning: Interpretation And Explanation Of Traditional Sub-Saharan African Religious Ethnographic Data, Joel Mort
Masters Theses
Concerns about accepted approaches to ethnographic data have arisen in terms of how scholars attempt to explain and interpret the formation, transmission, and persistence of seemingly bizarre religious ideas and practices. I would like to suggest a new way to make sense of ethnographic data regarding religious thought and action.
My contention is that the explanatory and interpretive methods employed by the majority of religion scholars are mistakenly and unknowingly informed by intuitive background theories. As a result of using intuitive assumptions rather than an established scientific theoretical tradition as the basis for interpretive inference the conclusions offered by these …

The Unfinished Woman: Images Of Single Women In Wharton, Parker, And Paley, Erin Wolverton
The Unfinished Woman: Images Of Single Women In Wharton, Parker, And Paley, Erin Wolverton
Honors Theses
Is the life of a single woman really worth living? The question permeates the culture of the post-feminist era. Women without children and without a committed relationship in their lives can be categorized in two ways: those who deliberately dismiss the idea of a spouse and those who have not found an acceptable one yet. Both categories carry their own social stigmas: a woman who can't trap a man is a failure, a woman who doesn't want one is unnatural. These prejudices have been a part of women's unconscious behavior since the earliest days of feminism.
Licensing Issues In The Acquisition Of Slides, Digital Images, And Digital Reproduction Rights For Two Digital Image Projects At Western Michigan University, Miranda Howard
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
" Advances taking place in digital imaging technology and projection are changing the way that libraries acquire images for classroom and research use. In the teaching of the visual arts and other subjects where material culture is at the heart of the discipline, pictures of objects are used as surrogates for actual artifacts, since pictorial surrogates allow instructors to talk about a work without having the actual piece present. One of the major changes in image acquisition brought about by new technology is that image vendors and the educational community are now much more attuned to the regulations of copyright …
The Tragedy Of The Rivers: Building Authority Over The British Water Environment, Kevin B. Vichcales
The Tragedy Of The Rivers: Building Authority Over The British Water Environment, Kevin B. Vichcales
Dissertations
"The Tragedy of the Rivers: Building Authority over the British Water Environment" examines the problem of rivers as common public resources in modern Britain. Viewed historically, the enduring problem of environmental pollution control in Britain has been the establishment of regulating authority over aspects of nature that are regarded simultaneously as economic resources, public utilities, and public amenities. Legislators, subject to pressure from industrial polluters, political parties, and advocates for environmental quality, sought at different times to locate authority at local, regional, national and extra-national levels. Each effort failed to resolve the issue of authority over the environment, because administrative …
