Out Of The Movement And On To Today: The Contemporary Impact Of The Students For A Democratic Society, Lindsay M. Hawley '06
Out Of The Movement And On To Today: The Contemporary Impact Of The Students For A Democratic Society, Lindsay M. Hawley '06
Honors Projects, History
Given the substantial amount literature on the Sixties, it is only natural that much scholarship would exist on the Students for a Democratic Society, one of its largest protest organizations. Divisions abound in literature on SDS. Some view the group as the most vital force of"the Movement," the general term for the widespread political and social counterculture that emerged in the Sixties. Others, like Andrew Hunt, contest this strong focus on SDS as the dominant protest organization of the era. Historians like Todd Gitlin make broad claims to the immense practical impact of SDS on society-"as an amalgam of reform …

The Cult Of Millenial Motherhood And The Rhetoric Of Female Reform: Domesticity, The Millenium, And Gender Constructions In Antebellum America, Erie M. Roberts '06
Honors Projects, History
Early American reform has long been a subject of study and interest for scholars of American history. The period between 1820 and 1850, during and directly after the Second Great Awakening, gave rise to myriad different reformers and reform movements, all with different agendas. Yet, within specific movements, and even among different ones, reformers held similar ideologies that wielded great influence over the movements they led. This was especially true of conservative female reformers, many of whom believed in domestic ideologies that prescribed a separate, yet equal sphere of influence for women. As Linda Kerber, Ruth H. Bloch, and Barbara …

"Spirit Of Health" And "Goblin Damned": The Ghost Of King Hamlet As A Symbol For The Religious Ambialence In England During The Religious Reformation, Bridget O'Connor '06
Honors Projects
A mysterious apparition appears during the opening scene of Hamlet, paradoxically seeking revenge and eternal peace. The Ghost of King Hamlet, unlike the supernatural spirits in most of Shakespeare's plays, is one of the most significant characters in Hamlet because he is the catalyst that sets the play in motion. Without him, Hamlet would never have known the truth about his father's death and would never have embarked upon the mission to kill Claudius. Because the Ghost's role is so pivotal to the plot, it was essential that the Elizabethan audience believed that the Ghost was real in order for …

I have found that poetry provides not only a space for the articulation of voice, but also a space for vocal play. Unlike spaces containing singular, masterful voices, poetic space can be poly-vocal. Much more than the voice of a critical essay, the voices of poems can dream, argue, create, question, collide, sometimes all at the same time, in new and relevant ways. While some poems function with linearity and mastery-they make arguments and stick to them--others employ a more sensing, associative language. Some navigate the space between such states, or take on both at the same time, and still …
