'Why Must I Be The Only Woman To Lose My Birthright?’ Gender And Modernity In Upper-Class Twentieth-Century American Life, Margaret Lowe

A 2007 CART Summer Grant would provide the critical time and resources I need to complete detailed archival for my proposed monograph: ‘Why Must I Be the Only Woman to Lose My Birthright?’ Gender and Modernity in Upper-Class Twentieth-Century American Life. A social history, this project will highlight the ways in which upper-class men and women (mostly from New England) both resisted and shaped the emergence of American modernity. With a close analysis of a broad range of primary sources, including personal papers, letters, diaries, medical and scientific tracts, and periodical literature, my research will illuminate the specific gender and …

Mistakes Rebuilt: Parallels In The Construction And Reconstruction Of The World Trade Center Site, 1973 And 2003, Lauren Gallow
Lauren L. Gallow
On September 11, 2001, as terrorist planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, few Americans were likely thinking of the rebuilding process that would inevitably ensue. However, since the site is so deeply invested with both commercial and public interests, the project to redesign the World Trade Center has become one of the most unique and challenging revitalization projects in history. While the political and commercial forces charged with rebuilding the World Trade Center site have outwardly appeared to be heavily concerned with the outpouring of public sentiment expressed concerning this project, in reality the redesign …

Revenge, Robert J. Stainton
Revenge, Robert J. Stainton
Robert J. Stainton
This paper discusses, in a preliminary manner, what revengeis. (It does not address the rationality or moral standing of revenge.) In particular, it proposes four elements of revenge —an agent, a recipient, a harm intended by the former, and a harm done by the latter which provokes the revenge. Based on these four elements, it highlights both agent-internal conditions forgetting revenge, and agent external ones. Along the way, the paper contrasts revenge with related phenomena like merely getting even, and retribution.
