Involver And Facilitator Environments: A Concept Of Environment With Behavioral Implications, Richard Mcrae Jul 1973

Involver And Facilitator Environments: A Concept Of Environment With Behavioral Implications, Richard Mcrae

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis begins with the assumption that environment and human behavior are two interacting components of any milieu. It is suggested that the social sciences (particularly psychology and sociology) have researched many of the relationships between environment and behavior, but primarily from a behavioral or social perspective. This thesis suggests that environmental design requires concepts of environment which relate to behavior, rather than concepts of behavior which relate to environment.

The major purpose of this thesis has been to translate behavioral data into environmental concepts which can be used by designers as design tools. Following the methodology outlined by Glaser …

Solar Energy For Tract Housing., Roy S. Brown May 1973

Solar Energy For Tract Housing., Roy S. Brown

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The United States, as well as other countries, is facing an energy crisis whose impact has already begun to be felt. The energy we use daily as utilities and take for granted in our homes has begun to run short. If present trends of production and consumption of energy continue, there will not be enough to power our homes by the end of this century.

The technology is already available to harness solar energy for individual (or multiple) dwellings for use as hot water, space heat, and air conditioning. Solar water heaters are available commercially on a small scale. Solar …

A Case Study For Rural Revitalization., Gerald Donald Percifield May 1973

A Case Study For Rural Revitalization., Gerald Donald Percifield

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Since the industrial revolution, there has been a steady outmigration from rural areas into the urban centers. The decrease of economic activity in rural America, caused by the mechanization of farming techniques, the increased size of farms and the centralization of manufacturing and industrial processes, has led to this continuous out-migration. Now, in the early seventies, we find that migration from rural to urban has overcrowded, polluted and congested these urban areas and left most of America vacant. This thesis attempts to show that a rural life-style is possible and that the problems that caused the migration from rural areas …

Community Performing Arts Centres For Small Cities In New Mexico., Timothy C. Christensen May 1973

Community Performing Arts Centres For Small Cities In New Mexico., Timothy C. Christensen

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Often in the process of developing a performing arts centre, decisions are made that affect the physical form of the facility before an architect has been selected. The reasons for this vary. The client (or clients) may have definite ideas about the facility and feel that he does not need an architect's help in making a program. Sometimes, the client wants a facility just like the facility in a neighboring community and only needs the architect to make a copy. Often, community "experts" such as the high school drama teacher, or the president of the community concert association, are used …

College Union Design Criteria, James C. Lewis May 1973

College Union Design Criteria, James C. Lewis

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Purpose

The purpose of this thesis is the study of union buildings on college and university campuses from the architectural point of view. The final objective is to arrive at a set of guidelines to facilitate union design for planners and architects.

Limits

The study is limited to union buildings themselves, with a small amount of additional comments on the problem of campus planning. While architectural considerations are the focus of the study, exact architectural details are not; the main thrust is on functional requirements.

Methods

Three methods are used to arrive at the guidelines: (1) a variety of questionnaire-type …
