The Greenfield Versus Brownfield Debate: A Balanced Approach To Industrial Planning, John R. Mullin, Zenia Kotval, Maureen Moriarty Jul 1993

The Greenfield Versus Brownfield Debate: A Balanced Approach To Industrial Planning, John R. Mullin, Zenia Kotval, Maureen Moriarty

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

Across the United States, mill towns and industrial communities, the "brownfields", have been experiencing rapid disinvestment as manufacturing and service firms increasingly move to suburban industrial parks, the "greenfields". This locational trend has been intensified over the years by our policies and regulations for industrial development. Is this shifting balance a desired result of our policies? The authors believe this trend has had negative effects on both the center cities left behind, as well as on the communities which are being developed. Analysis of the "Greenfield-Brownfield" debate can assist economic development planners in promoting balanced industrial growth. This article analyzes …

Eureka General Plan Update, Susie Van Kirk Jul 1993

Eureka General Plan Update, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

Historic resources within the City of Eureka's planning area, which extends from College of the Redwoods to Indianola, reflect the region's development since its settlement in 1850. Significant in the area's social, economic, and architectural history, these resources include a diversity of structures, sites, groups, neighborhoods, and communities, each of which contributes to the planning area's aesthetic qualities and historic context. They are the tangible evidence of the regions past and a heritage to be valued by this and future generations.

Center for Architecture and Urban Planning Research Books

Two concept designs for lunar habitats are explored and developed in this monograph based on human factors/environment-behavior considerations. Attention is given to initial operating configuration design requirements, different technological options and 12 different habitat concepts. Domus 1 is a pressurized self-supporting membrane structure (PSSMS) proposed by Chow and Lin. Dymaxion is a dome structure based on the work of Buckminster Fuller. The master plan, construction sequencing, technical subsystems and interior configuration of both of these concepts are presented.

Explorations Into The Characteristics, The Determinants Of Production, And The Impact Of Land Policies On The Informal Housing Sector In Alexandria, Egypt, Mostafa Morsi El Araby

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the housing characteristics and the determinants of housing production of the informal housing sector in Alexandria, Egypt. It also examines the impact of land policies on the development of the informal housing sector. Informal housing, by definition, is constructed and acquired outside the legal procedure of land and building registration and without the necessary permissions and approvals. Therefore, there is a little knowledge about it, and its role in the housing market could be underestimated. The aim of this research is to enhance the factual knowledge about informal housing as a basis for future policy development.

Future Water Demand In Cache Valley, Utah, Chris C. Saunders May 1993

Future Water Demand In Cache Valley, Utah, Chris C. Saunders

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present investigation examined the current water demand characteristics and the future water demand of Cache Valley, Utah for the time period of 1990-2010. The demand attributable to agriculture and seven nonagricultural economics sectors was determined and forecasts were performed based on those demand values.

Linear regression, extrapolation, and alternative futures forecasting methods were applied and the various results compared against each other. Three different scenarios were calculated for residential demand to represent different sources and composition of demand information. It was determined that consideration of water demand data excluding Logan City provided the best statistical description of water demand. …

Cultural Corridor: A Preservation District In Downtown Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Augusto Ivan Pinheiro, Vicente Del Rio Apr 1993

Cultural Corridor: A Preservation District In Downtown Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Augusto Ivan Pinheiro, Vicente Del Rio

City and Regional Planning

This paper concerns the first large-scale urban-design project in Brazil to deal with preservation and revitalization in the inner city. In protecting the cultural heritage while still encouraging new construction, the project has been successful in setting a new methodology for development control and in reinforcing the traditional character of a large area of downtown Rio de Janeiro. Within the framework of an overall design-review process, the project has made use of special land-use regulations, design guidelines, participatory and educational programs, and substantial tax deductions. Traditional architectural patterns and uses have been reinforced, and development pressure from large corporations has …
