Using Body Condition Index Can Be An Unreliable Indicator Of Fitness: A Case Of Sand Lizard Lacerta Agilis Linnaeus, 1758 (Sauria: Lacertidae), Krzysztof Dudek, Zofia Sajkowska, Monika Gawalek, Anna Ekner-Grzyb

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In ecological and morphological studies, researchers often use body condition index as a measure of an individual's fitness. Our research shows that body condition index may be an unreliable method for this purpose, because changes in lizards' body proportions are not stable during their lifetime. Results obtained from a Polish population of the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) show that the body length increases faster than the body mass, meaning that the correlation between these 2 parameters is not linear. Herpetologists frequently use the body condition index to compare the fitness of lizards of different ages. Our study demonstrates that this …

Both sexes of Diarthrodella ergeneae sp. nov. (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Paramesochridae), which were collected from the intertidal zone of Kurtpınarı Beach along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, are described in detail. The new species is morphologically most similar to D. convexa Kunz, 1981; D. secunda secunda Kunz, 1954; and D. lancifera Kunz, 1981 according to the setal formula of the swimming legs, but D. ergeneae sp. nov. can easily be differentiated from D. convexa by the ratio of P1 exopod/enp-1, by the lack of an inner seta on P2 enp-2, and by the shape and armature of P5; from D. secunda …

Spider Assemblages And Dynamics On A Seasonal Island In The Pripyat River, Belarus, Izabela Hajdamowicz, Lucyna Pilacka, Wlodzimierz Meissner

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Spider assemblages on a seasonal river meadow island were studied in spring 2006 and 2007. Samples were collected with a set of 20-30 pitfall traps once every 5 days. Altogether, 1179 spiders belonging to 30 species were collected. There were 5 constant dominant species: medium-sized wandering Pardosa prativaga, and small-sized air colonizers Oedothorax retusus, Erigone dentipalpis, Oedothorax fuscus, and Pachygnatha degeeri. The relatively low species diversity was higher in 2007 and grew throughout the season with the lowering of the water level. The total turnover of species involved the least abundant species (below 1% of the total), mainly Linyphiidae. Abundance …

Distribution Of Two Pine Processionary Moth Species In Turkey Evidences A Contact Zone, Kahraman İpekdal, Christian Burban, Carole Kerdelhue, Seli̇m Süalp Çağlar

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The pine processionary moths Thaumetopoea pityocampa and T. Wilkinsoni are among the most important Mediterranean pine defoliators. Although recent studies suggest that the two species may coexist in Turkey, the relevant literature lacks precise information on the occurrence and exact distribution of the two species in this country. In particular, whether the two sister taxa form a contact zone is still unknown. In this study, we aimed to reveal the limits of the ranges of the two species in Turkey by using nuclear (ITS-1, photolyase) and mitochondrial markers (COI). Multilocus molecular characterization of the two species showed for the first …

Diet Of Barn Owl Tyto Alba In Central South Bulgaria As Influenced By Landscape Structure, Boyan Milchev

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study of the diet of Barn Owl Tyto alba analyzed pellets containing 18,810 prey specimens. Small mammals (98.2% by number, 97.5% by biomass) dominated, while birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects constituted a negligible portion of the diet (1.8% by number, 2.5% by biomass). Voles (Microtus spp.) were the most numerous prey (35.3 ± 14.4%, range 14.6%-67.1%) in 9 localities (69.2%, n = 13 individually studied localities) and dominated the biomass in all diets (51.4 ± 14.1%, range 27.4%-78.2%). The lesser white-toothed shrew (Crocidura suaveolens) (20.8 ± 7.6%, range 7.3%-32.8%) was the most frequent prey in the other 4 localities …

Monthly Variations In The Shell Structure Of Two Freshwater Ostracod (Crustacea) Species In Karapınar Spring (Bolu, Turkey), Okan Külköylüoğlu, Manuel R. Palacios-Fest, Dirk Baron, Necmetti̇n Sari Jan 2015

Monthly Variations In The Shell Structure Of Two Freshwater Ostracod (Crustacea) Species In Karapınar Spring (Bolu, Turkey), Okan Külköylüoğlu, Manuel R. Palacios-Fest, Dirk Baron, Necmetti̇n Sari

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The variations of environmental conditions (T °C, pH, Δ13C, Δ18O, Mg/Ca, and Sr/Ca) for two ostracod species (Psychrodromus olivaceus, Potamocypris similis) were analyzed and compared to identify the controls of environmental parameters on the chemical and isotopic composition of their valves. The specimens were collected from Karapınar Spring (Bolu, Turkey) between October 2009 and November 2010. The species were observed throughout the year. Psychrodromus olivaceus showed relatively constant Mg/Ca ratios during the study period, whereas those of P. Similis showed more variability. The ratio was also significantly different (P < 0.05) between the two species. We did not find significant correlation between water temperature and either of the species' Mg/Ca ratios. The stable isotope record for P. Similis was very patchy, showing a small range of values consistent with the groundwater source, similar to the behavior of Sr/Ca. The Sr/Ca ratio displayed little variation throughout the year, suggesting hydrochemical stability over time, most likely in response to the groundwater source. The stable isotope data displayed pronounced variability for P. Similis but little for P. Olivaceus, suggesting that the former may be responding to seasonality, whereas the latter responds to groundwater.

Mammals Under A Colony Of Great Cormorants: Population Structure And Body Condition Of Yellow-Necked Mice, Linas Balciauskas, Laima Balciauskiene, Marius Jasiulionis

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Investigations into small mammals within the territory of a breeding colony of great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis), carried out in 2011-2014 near Juodkrant? (West Lithuania), demonstrated the colony's impact on the dominant rodent, yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis). The age and sex structure of the sampled mice (n = 432), along with body weight, body condition index, and residuals from the linear regression, were used to analyse data from five zones of the colony and the surrounding forest. We found that in the most active zones of the cormorant colony, the age structure of the population was tilted towards a prevalence …
