Relationships Between Stem Rust ( Puccinia Graminis Triticieriks. And Henn.) Resistances And Morphological Traits In Some Wheat (Triticumspp.) Hybrids, Hakan Ulukan, Murat Özgen

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This research was carried out to determine whether dominant morphological features could be used instead of disease tests as markers of lines resistant to stem rust ( Puccinia graminis tritici Eriks. and Henn.). Of the 13 species used as material in the hybridization program, 9 were non-resistant and 4 were resistant. Experiments were carried out separately, because of the different genetic structure in seedling resistance and adult resistance. It was determined that in view of the morphological characters examined; auricle colour, leaf colour and leaf waxiness in seedling resistance, and grain glumaceouss, spike brittleness and awn dentiness in adult resistance …

Strength Of Individual Soil Aggregates Against Crushing Forces I. Influence Of Aggregate Characteristics, Taşkin Öztaş, Koray Sönmez, Mustafa Y. Canbolat

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was undertaken to determine the relative strength of individual soil aggregates of different sizes and shapes against crushing forces. Soil aggregates were placed individually between a clean-fixed flat surface and a flat plate connected to a pocketpenetrometer and crushed under applied stress. The results of this study show that the strength of the aggregates against disruptive forces was directly related to aggregate size and shape. As the aggregate size increased, so did the applied stress required to crush the aggregate. Significant relationships were found between applied stress and the mass, volume, average diameter (D avg ) and geometric …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of selected soil properties on the relative strength of individual oil aggregates against crushing forces. Soil aggregates were crushed between a flat surface and a flat plate connected to a pocket penetrometer. Significant relationships were found between dry-aggregate stability and the clay content, sand content, CEC and ESP of the soils studied. There was also a significant positive correlation between dry-aggregate stability and wet-aggregate stability (r=0.94**). No significant relationships were found between dry-aggregate stability and silt content, organic matter content, CaCO 3 content or pH. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated …

Rapd Analysis Of Genetic Variation In Barley, Gülruh Albayrak, Nermi̇n Gözükirmizi

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The variation between wild barley lines ( Hordeum murinum, Hordeum bulbosumand Hordeum vulgare spontaneum) orig-inated from Turkey were investigated comparatively at the molecular level with the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique. Leaf DNAs extracted from different barley lines were amplified with randomly chosen primers in a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Rates of polymorphisms between the 23 lines were determined in pairwise comparisons. The lowest value of poly-morphism was determined to be 0.3% between wild barley lines numbered 50327 and 50354, and between 48101 and 50365 while the highest polymorphism value was determined to be 60% between wild barley lines …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, some cytological characters of orchardgrass were examined naturally growing in Erzurum. Plants assessed for their chromosome number were tetraploid (2n=28). In metaphase I stage the most prevalent pairing was bivalents (avg. 8.37). This was followed by quadrivalent (avg. 2.81), univalent (avg. 0.04) and trivalent (avg. 0.015) pairings. All combinations of bivalents and quadrivalents were recorded. In most of anaphase l cells examined chromosomes distribution to poles were even (14: l4), however some cells had laggings and bridges. In addition, 95. 17% of observed tetrads had no micronucleus.

In this study, the effects of rooted offshoot properties and number of GA_3 applications, 30 ppm in concentration, on the early and total yield of the globe artichoke cv "Sakız", produced in one year, were tested. It was determined that when the offshoots, which were at the vegetative growth stage, were used in plantation, higher early and total yields were obtained than that of the generative growth stage. This positive result gained with offshoots at the vegetative stage was also improved significantly with all GA_3 applications, 30 ppm in concentration when compared with untreated plants. Double GA_3 application gave better …

The Relationships Between Penetration Resistance And Certain Soil Properties, Cevdet Şeker

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between penetration resistance and certain soil properties, and to develop regression equations based on these relationships for predicting penetration resistance. Field studies were conducted on four different Entisol soils in plains in the Konya regions. Below 0.2 \mum, pore-size distribution was found to be positively relatd to soil penetration resistanca and bulk density. Above 50 \mum, pro-size distribution was found to be negatively related to soil penetration resistance and total porosity.

Cost Of Bread Making In Central Samsun And An Economic Analysis Of The Factors Affecting Bread Prices, Hüseyi̇n Avni̇ Ci̇nemre, Mehmet Bozoğlu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Most of the bread making units in the central district of the province of Samsun are small-scale and have so-called "black-oven" technology. On average, 500 kg of flour is processed daily in a bakery and in doing so only 37.3 percent of the total daily capacity of the bakery is utilized. Bread sold at kiosks, small grocery stores and in markets makes up 62.5 percent of total bread sales. The rest is sold directly by the production units. The production cost of a 250 gr loaf at bakeries is 12,848 TL and this figure reaches 15,098 TL when the marketing …

This study was carried out on the natural range and meadows of Atatürk University in Erzurum, 1996. Recorded species in the study were separated into 16 grasses, 16 legumes and 60 other families. High percentages of the ungrazed species (approximately % 60) indicate that the rangelands have seriously been degrated. In chemical analysis, grasses had the highest crude cellulose content, while legumes had the highest crude protein content, and legumes and other families had the highest mineral element content. In conclusion some wild species on the district rangelands could successfully be utilized in the range improvement.

Investigation Of Optimum Tillage Depth For Sunflower In Crop Rotation Under Central Anatolian Conditions, Yaşar Murat Çeli̇k, İlhami̇ Ünver

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Optimum tillage depth for sunflower after wheat was studied on Brown soils at two locations in Central Anatolia. The experiments were constituted as split randomized blocks with three replications, the treatments were 9-11, 14-16, 19-21 and 24-26 cm tillage depths. Weeds were permitted for growing in the half of every plot in order to test their adverse effect on sunflower yield. Optimum tillage depth under the research conditions was 14-16 cm from the points of economy and yield. Weed infestation significantly decreased the sunflower yield.

Problem Identification And Priority Setting In Agricultural Research: The Case Of The Eastern Margin Of Central Anatolia, Vedat Uzunlu, Ahmet Bayaner, Surendra P. S. Beniwal

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Since the resources available to research institutes are scarce, and experimentation is the most costly phase of a research program, researchers must make sure that the possible solutions to identified problems have a high chance of success. Consequently, problems should be carefully prioritized for experimentation. Factors limiting increased productivity in crop production in the Eastern Margin of Central Anatolia (EMCA) along with agro-ecological factors, apart from political concern, are agronomic constraints. Limiting factors in livestock production are insufficient feed supply, poor conditions of natural grazing areas, and housing of animals. Increasing the adoption rate of the recommended production practices among …
