Economics Of Residue Harvest: Regional Partnership Evaluation, David W. Archer, David J. Muth Jr., Jacob J. Jacobson, Douglas L. Karlen Dec 2011

Economics Of Residue Harvest: Regional Partnership Evaluation, David W. Archer, David J. Muth Jr., Jacob J. Jacobson, Douglas L. Karlen

Douglas L Karlen

Economic analyses on the viability of corn (Zea mays, L.) stover harvest for bioenergy production have largely been based on simulation modeling. While some studies have utilized field research data, most field-based analyses have included a limited number of sites and a narrow geographic distribution. An Iowa case study is developed illustrating the use of data extracted from a database of geographically distributed field studies for a region-specific economic analysis. The analysis utilizes grain and residue yield and associated management information from two Iowa field research sites that are Sun Grant Regional Partnership locations associated with the Corn Stover Regional …

Landscape Management For Sustainable Supplies Of Bioenergy Feedstock And Enhanced Soil Quality, Douglas L. Karlen, David J. Muth Jr. Dec 2011

Landscape Management For Sustainable Supplies Of Bioenergy Feedstock And Enhanced Soil Quality, Douglas L. Karlen, David J. Muth Jr.

Douglas L Karlen

Agriculture can simultaneously address global food, feed, fi ber, and energy challenges provided our soil, water, and air resources are not compromised in doing so. As we embark on the 19th Triennial Conference of the International Soil and Tillage Research Organization (ISTRO), I am pleased to proclaim that our members are well poised to lead these endeavors because of our comprehensive understanding of soil, water, agricultural and bio-systems engineering processes. The concept of landscape management, as an approach for integrating multiple bioenergy feedstock sources, including biomass residuals, into current crop production systems, is used as the focal point to show …

Morphological, Anatomical And Molecular Investigation Into Witches’ Broom Disease Of Mamejvo (Enicostemma Axillare), K. Abirami, Anjali Sharma, Jatindra Nath Samanta, V. S. Rana, Kunal Mandal Dec 2011

Morphological, Anatomical And Molecular Investigation Into Witches’ Broom Disease Of Mamejvo (Enicostemma Axillare), K. Abirami, Anjali Sharma, Jatindra Nath Samanta, V. S. Rana, Kunal Mandal

Kunal Mandal

Mamejvo (Enicostemma axillare Raynal) is a perennial herb with diversified health benefits. It was found to be affected by a witches’ broom disease under the field conditions at Anand, Gujarat, India. Affected plants were 53.33% reduced in height due to shortened internodes, leading to typical witches’ broom symptoms. Flower size was reduced significantly in the affected plants compared with the healthy ones and their petal color gradually turned green (virescence). Affected plants produced 2.5 times more dry herbage than the normal plants but with less active ingredient (swertiamarin). Symptomatic plants died early while root suckers from such plants failed to …

Public Expenditures, Private Incentives, And Technology Adoption The Economics Of Hybrid Rice In South Asia, David J. Spielman, Deepthi Kolady, Patrick Ward, Harun- Ar- Rashid Dec 2011

Public Expenditures, Private Incentives, And Technology Adoption The Economics Of Hybrid Rice In South Asia, David J. Spielman, Deepthi Kolady, Patrick Ward, Harun- Ar- Rashid

Deepthi Kolady

The rapid expansion of hybrid rice cultivation in China has contributed significantly to improving food security in the country since the 1980s. However, few other Asian countries have seen similar expansions in hybrid rice cultivation or the associated yield and output gains. This paper examines the technical challenges, market opportunities, and policy constraints related to hybrid rice in South Asia, with specific emphasis on India and Bangladesh. The paper sets the discussion within a novel analytical approach to agricultural science, technology, and innovation that focuses on improving the efficiency with which new technologies are transformed into economically relevant products and …

Pesticide Residue Determination In Shahr-E-Rey Tomatoes Using Quechers Method, Amin Mousavi Khaneghah Mr Dec 2011

Pesticide Residue Determination In Shahr-E-Rey Tomatoes Using Quechers Method, Amin Mousavi Khaneghah Mr

Amin Mousavi Khaneghah

In this study, pesticide residues in tomato products from Shahr-e-Rey farms were measured and investigated by QuEChERS modified method. This method was on the base of the sample preparation in few steps and high speed. Measurement of pesticide residues was carried out by gas chromatograph with electron capture detector. In this study, most of the pesticides showed a recovery in the range of 70% – 120%. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for all pesticides were lower than 0.50 and 1.90 μg/kg respectively. chlorpyrifos was detected in studied samples at average concentration 3.22 μg/kg, which was lower …

Evaluation On Leaf Proline Amount In Three Bread Wheat Cultivars In Presence Of Two Fertilizers Containing Amino Acids In Drought Stress, Amin Mousavi Khaneghah Mr Dec 2011

Evaluation On Leaf Proline Amount In Three Bread Wheat Cultivars In Presence Of Two Fertilizers Containing Amino Acids In Drought Stress, Amin Mousavi Khaneghah Mr

Amin Mousavi Khaneghah

To study leaf proline amount in presence of two fertilizers containing amino acids in drought stress on three bread wheat cultivars, a research was conducted in Ardabil IAU Research Center in 2012. To achieve this, factorial experimental design based on completely randomized block design was used. Factor A in six conditions (normal, aminol forte and fosnutren, drought, drought + aminol forte, drought + fosnutren) and factor B included three wheat genotypes (Kuhdasht, Cross Sabalan and Chmran). Results showed that there is a significant difference between The solutions on leave proline at 1 percent. Also, there was a significant difference between …

Impact Of Biofield Treatment On Growth And Yieldof Lettuce And Tomato, Vishal Shinde, Frank Sances, Shrikant Patil, Amy Spence Dec 2011

Impact Of Biofield Treatment On Growth And Yieldof Lettuce And Tomato, Vishal Shinde, Frank Sances, Shrikant Patil, Amy Spence

Mahendra Kumar Trivedi

Recent studies report the effect of biofield treatment on changes in structural characteristics of organic and inorganic matter, on cancer cells in vitro and on overall plant development. This study tested the impact of the same treatment applied to lettuce and tomato seeds and transplants (Lactuca sativa var. capitata and Lycopersiconesculentum var. Roma) in commercial plantings with and without fertilizers and pesticides, in relation to yield, quality, and pest inhibition. Treated lettuce plants with fertilizer and pesticide applications were more vigorous, exhibited less incidence of soil-borne fungal wilt, and subsequent yield was statistically greater 43% compared to untreated plants. Treated …

Porous Capsule Irrigation, David A. Bainbridge Dec 2011

Porous Capsule Irrigation, David A. Bainbridge

David A Bainbridge

Porous capsule irrigation is a modern adaptation of buried clay pot irrigation. Research in Brazil and Mexico has demonstrated its value in improving water use efficiency. Porous capsules are more easily integrated in an irrigation network than buried clay pots.
