In The Valley Of The Giants: Cultivating Intentionality And Integration, Miriam Carey Jan 2012

In The Valley Of The Giants: Cultivating Intentionality And Integration, Miriam Carey

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

This study examines the cultivation of intentionality and integration in a foundation level General Education class: Communities and Societies. Three research tasks were set within the context of a grounded theoretical approach: codification of indicators for both intentionality and integration, and an examination of student learning logs. Intentionality was helpfully scaffolded by targeted questions for reflection while integration appeared more spontaneously, apparently as a result of the course design and delivery but also possibly as a result of the nature of free-styling journaling. Learning logs suggested students found full class discussions, continuous small groups, and journaling itself to be the …

Expanding The Understanding Of The Social Determinants Of Health To Support Community Readiness For Change, Nandi A. Marshall Jan 2012

Expanding The Understanding Of The Social Determinants Of Health To Support Community Readiness For Change, Nandi A. Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Addressing the Social Determinants of Health is critical if we truly want to achieve health equity. The World Health Organization's Commission on the Social Determinants of Health (2008) recognized the need to broaden the understanding of these determinants among the general public to facilitate change in communities. Using a concurrent transformative case study, this mixed methods design explored the potential increase in 1) awareness of the social determinants of health, 2) understanding of context and 3) organizational empowerment through the use of Photovoice and Action planning with a Rural Diabetes Community Coalition in Southeast Georgia. Engaging the coalition through these …

Relationship Of Select Admissions Criteria To Pre-Licensure Requirements In A Graduate Degree Program In Occupational Therapy, Sharon Delaney Swift Jan 2012

Relationship Of Select Admissions Criteria To Pre-Licensure Requirements In A Graduate Degree Program In Occupational Therapy, Sharon Delaney Swift

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the profession of occupational therapy continues to become widely recognized as a top career choice, the number of applications to occupational therapy educational programs continues to rise. To date there has been little research regarding the admission process and the admission variables used to select candidates for admission. Healthcare professions such as occupational therapy must reliably select those applicants who can succeed in the academic classroom and in the clinical setting by providing competent compassionate patient care.

This study sought to examine whether select cognitive and non-cognitive admission variables could be used to predict graduate performance on pre-licensure requirements …

Curriculum And The Life Erratic: The Geographic Cure, Leslie B. Nissen Jan 2012

Curriculum And The Life Erratic: The Geographic Cure, Leslie B. Nissen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines a subset of Children of Alcoholics, whom I call Geographic Cure Children, who cope with both fermented parenting (as I have termed it) AND transient schooling. Viewed by schools and school systems simply as “highly mobile” students, their frequent school changes tell only part of the story. Geographic Cure Children arrive at their newest classrooms bearing the heavy burdens of emotional trauma and dark secrets about the Life Erratic. However, due to frequent mobility, their access to help or support is sketchy at best. Through currere, I employ autobiographical and psychoanalytic lenses to explore the intersection of …

African American Grandparents Raising Their Grandchildren In Rural Areas: A Phenomenological Investigation In South Georgia, Emmanuel Nii Okai Clottey Jan 2012

African American Grandparents Raising Their Grandchildren In Rural Areas: A Phenomenological Investigation In South Georgia, Emmanuel Nii Okai Clottey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Grandparents are increasingly raising their grandchildren in the United States of America. Those grandparents who live in rural areas face limited resources to help them raise their grandchildren. This phenomenological study is an investigation of the phenomenon of African American grandparents raising their grandchildren in Southeastern rural Georgia and the resources available to them. It looked at what it will take to start a faith-based or community-based support group for these Africa American grandparents raising their grandchildren in a rural setting. The concept of phenomenology served as the theoretical foundation for the study with social ecological model and social support …
