Aim: The aim of this case study was to explore if observing leaders in the context of their day-to-day work can provide an insight into how they lead in particular circumstances. Background: The study was carried out in small organisation which was set up five years ago. Methods: A case study methodology was used. Data was collected by field notes of non-participant and participant observations. Follow-up interviews were transcribed and analysed to contextualise the observations. Work Environment Characteristics Of High-Quality Home Health Agencies, S. Tullai-Mcguinness, J. Riggs, Amany Farag

This concurrent mixed-method study examines the nurse work environment of high-quality Medicare-certified home health agencies. High-quality (n=6) and low-quality (n=6) home health agencies were recruited using agency-level publicly reported patient outcomes. Direct care registered nurses (RNs) from each agency participated in a focus group and completed the Practice Environment Scale of the Nurse Work Index (PES-NWI). No significant differences were found in the PES-NWI results between nurses working in high- and low-quality agencies, though nurses in high-quality agencies scored higher on all subscales. Nurses working in all the high-quality agencies identified themes of adequate staffing, supportive managers, and team work. …

AIM: To describe and compare how nurses representing four age cohorts perceive their manager's leadership style and unit climate. BACKGROUND: The current workforce consists of nurses representing four generational cohorts. Nursing literature suggests that nurses from each age cohort think, behave and approach work differently. Limited empirical evidence, however, exists about how nurses from each age cohort perceive two aspects of their work environment: their managers' leadership style and unit climate. To promote the holistic development of university students, a course entitled "Tomorrow's Leaders" was developed and offered at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Based on a case study approach, reflective journals of five outstanding students of the course are presented and analyzed (i.e., thick description), with several themes emerging from the reflection. First, the students liked the course, and they identified many positive attributes. Second, the students appreciated the instructors. Third, the students viewed that the course contributed to different aspects of their development. Fourth, some areas of improvements were proposed. Most previous literature focused on obtaining input from an architect’s or nurse’s perspective, and very few studies have analyzed input from the residents—the primary stakeholder (Woo, Mak, Cheng & Choy, 2011). In 2004 the Institute Of Medicine called for healthcare leaders to embrace and adopt transformational leadership practices to promote quality of care and favorable patient outcomes. Nurse managers are accountable for 24-hour operations of their departments and influence patient outcomes. The purpose of this research was to examine the relationships among nurse manager transformational leadership practices, patient outcomes and hospital types (Magnet, On The Journey, and Non-Magnet). This study used Principal Component Analysis to examine factors that facilitate emergent change in an organization. As organizational life becomes more complex, today’s dominant management paradigms no longer suffice. The holding environment concept, developed by Donald Winnicott, has been used to represent the type of support that encourages adaptive change during psychosocial transitions. The leadership and change literature posited that the holding environment had the ability to shape the trajectory of the transition, yet did not test this empirically. The psychosocial breast cancer literature empirically researched support during and after treatments ended, but did not incorporate the holding environment concept.
