An Examination Of Non-Linear Relationships Between Intellectual Property Rights Protection And Growth, Brian R. Lemak 2010 Gettysburg College

An Examination Of Non-Linear Relationships Between Intellectual Property Rights Protection And Growth, Brian R. Lemak

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper examines the possibility of a non-linear relationship existing between intellectual property rights protection (IPR) and gross domestic product (GDP) growth rates. A theoretical justification is developed for the potential existence of a non-linear relationship in terms of a quadratic relationship. This is then examined using panel data from 191 countries and taken in 5 year intervals, although the data had many missing observations. Results indicate there is statistically significant evidence that a quadratic relationship exists between IPR and GDP growth, however there are reservations about this evidence due to a dearth of observations in countries with very weak …

Greenberg, Rafael Augusto Teixeira De Aguiar, Francisco Campos, Eric Buch, Badara Samb

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

In countries severely affected by HIV/AIDS, shortages of health workers present a major obstacle to scaling up HIV services. Adopting a task shifting approach for the deployment of community health workers (CHWs) represents one strategy for rapid expansion of the health workforce. This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of CHWs with a focus on identifying the critical elements of an enabling environment that can ensure they provide quality services in a manner that is sustainable. The method of work included a collection of primary data in five countries: Brazil, Ethiopia, Malawi, Namibia, and Uganda. The findings show that delegation …

The Impact Of Information Retrieval Skills Training For Nurses: A Case Study Of Ken-Ahila/Inasp Course In Nairobi, Kenya, 2009, Symphrose Ouma, Nasra Gathoni

Libraries

Introduction: Nurses would normally seek for information for three basic reasons: Patient care; practice development and lastly for professional/personal development. In this study, KEN-AHILA identified nurses as the largest group of healthcare providers who are in dire need of skills to know when they need healthcare information, where and how to find it and efficiently and effectively put it into use.. The HIFA2015 challenge for 2009 spelling out the need for nurses to have access to the information they need for diagnosis, appropriate care and treatment and save lives, gave KEN-AHILA the added incentive to source for funding and eventually …

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Over the past decade, the Port of Virginia has slipped to third place on the East Coast behind Savannah, Ga. Perhaps we can reverse this by means of Norfolk Southern Corp.’s Heartland Corridor and the recent lease acquisition of the APM Maersk facility in Portsmouth.

Review Of Research Data Curation Practices And Attitudes Of Stakeholders, Suzie Allard, Elizabeth Allen, Christina Murray, Robert J. Sandusky

DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups

Advances in technology have allowed researchers to create large amounts of reusable digital data sets. This phenomenon, e-Research, encompasses not only innovative forms of scholarship in the sciences, but the humanities and social sciences as well (Lynch 2008). While digital data benefits research by permitting new types of problems to be addressed, increases ability to collaborate across disciplines and institutions, and allows for replication of previous results, it is easily lost for future use unless action is taken to manage it from its inception. Data curation is the process of managing digital data from the moment of its creation so …

Credit Risk Models: An Analysis Of Default Correlation, Howard Qi, Yan Alice Xie, Sheen Liu 2010 Michigan Technological University

Credit Risk Models: An Analysis Of Default Correlation, Howard Qi, Yan Alice Xie, Sheen Liu

College of Business Publications

This paper examines one of the major problems in credit risk models widely used in the financial industry to forecast future defaults and bankruptcies. We find that even after proper calibration, a representative credit risk model can severely underestimate default correlation. We further find that a likely reason for the underestimation of default correlation is the problematic common practice in the financial industry of using observable equity correlation as a proxy for unobservable asset correlation when the model is applied to predict default correlation. However, our results show that this proxy in common practice is not valid.

Analyzing The Relationship Between Dependent And Independent Variables In Marketing: A Comparison Of Multiple Regression With Path Analysis, Junhong Min, Debi P. Mishra 2010 Michigan Technological University

Analyzing The Relationship Between Dependent And Independent Variables In Marketing: A Comparison Of Multiple Regression With Path Analysis, Junhong Min, Debi P. Mishra

College of Business Publications

Multiple regression models continue to be widely used in marketing. Within the regression framework, researchers have to grapple with and resolve several contentious issues. For example, multicollinearity, nonsimultaneous estimation of parameters, inherent measurement error in independent variables, absence of overall goodness of fit indices, and lack of compelling guidelines for adding and deleting model variables are some common estimation problems associated with this method. In the absence of universally acceptable guidelines, researchers often use judgment calls to deal with these issues. Such ad-hoc approaches, in turn, compromise the potential usefulness of multiple regression models. In this paper, we position path …

Professional Tasks Of Librarians At Small Bible College Libraries, Jeffery S. Gates 2010 Cedarville University

Professional Tasks Of Librarians At Small Bible College Libraries, Jeffery S. Gates

Library Faculty Publications

The author attempts to define professional library tasks by surveying small Bible college librarians to discover the tasks on which they spent the most time performing directly and which tasks they considered “professional.” Respondents generally spent most of their time directly performing many tasks that they considered professional in nature. They apparently were unaware that they directly performed many tasks that they did not consider professional and did not directly perform many tasks that they considered professional. The author concludes that most professional tasks of small Bible college librarians tend to be indirect and long-range and that most of their …

The Role Of Culture, Family Processes, And Anger Regulation In Korean American Adolescents’ Adjustment Problems, Irene J. K. Park, Paul Youngbin Kim, Rebecca Cheung, May Kim

SPU Works

Using an ecologically informed, developmental psychopathology perspective, the present study examined contextual and intrapersonal predictors of depressive symptoms and externalizing problems among Korean American adolescents. Specifically, the role of cultural context (selfconstruals), family processes (family cohesion and conflict), and anger regulation (anger control, anger suppression, and outward anger expression) were examined. Study participants were N = 166 Korean American adolescents ranging from 11-15 (M = 13.0; SD = 1.2) years old. Results showed that depressive symptoms were significantly associated with lower levels of perceived family cohesion, higher levels of perceived family conflict intensity, and higher levels of anger suppression. Externalizing …

Libraries And Strategic Change: The Role Of Institutional Repository+ Services, Marilyn K. Moody

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the "new normal" environment for higher education, libraries must realign themselves much more closely with the university mission, vision, and strategic priorities. In this environment of constant change, libraries must take on new roles and emphasize different priorities. Institutional repository services are essential to this process. This presentation gives examples of the Boise State University ScholarWorks institutional repository+ services and how those services support the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the university.

Key points include: • Libraries must aggressively realign resources to align with their university’s mission, vision, and strategic goals and priorities. • Universities are changing directions …
