Let My People Go: Ethnic In-Group Bias In Judicial Decisions – Evidence From A Randomized Natural Experiment, Oren Gazal-Ayal, Raanan Sulitzeanu-Kenan
Oren Gazal-Ayal
Does ethnic identity affect judicial decisions? We provide new evidence on ethnic biases in judicial behavior, by examining the decisions of Arab and Jewish judges in first bail hearings of Arab and Jewish suspects in Israeli courts. Our setting avoids the potential bias from unobservable case characteristics by exploiting the random assignment of judges to cases during weekends, and by focusing on the difference in ethnic disparity between Arab and Jewish judges. The study concentrates on the early-stage decisions in the judicial criminal process, controlling for the state's position, and excluding agreements, thereby allowing us to distinguish judicial bias from …

Framing Water Policy In A Carbon Affected And Carbon Constrained Environment, Noah D. Hall, Robert H. Abrams

Climate change driven by greenhouse gas emissions is substantially altering water availability while increasing water demand. Shifts in domestic energy policy and production, while needed to confront the challenge of climate change, may further stress the nation’s water resources. These changes and new demands will be most severe in regions that are already experiencing water stresses and conflicts. This article examines the extent of the changes in water supply and demand by assessing how water conflicts will be addressed in the four overarching water use categories: water for population security, water for ecological security, water for energy security, and water …

Context Is Everything: Sociality And Privacy In Online Social Network Sites, Ronald Leenes
Ronald Leenes
Social Network Sites (SNSs) pose many privacy issues. Apart from the fact that privacy in an online social network site may sound like an oxymo- ron, significant privacy issues are caused by the way social structures are currently handled in SNSs. Conceptually different social groups are generally conflated into the singular notion of ‘friend’. This chapter argues that attention should be paid to the social dynamics of SNSs and the way people handle social contexts. It shows that SNS technology can be designed to support audience segregation, which should mitigate at least some of the privacy issues in Social Network …

Achievement goal theory has emerged as a dominant paradigm for understanding student motivation. However, its focus on mastery and performance goals as central constructs has led to a neglect of the role of social goals in motivating students. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different kinds of social goals (social affiliation and social concern goals) on various types of educational outcomes. Results indicate that even after controlling for the effects of the oft-examined mastery and performance goals, social goals were still able to predict additional variance in the outcomes of interest. Social concern goals …

Customary International Law In The 21st Century: Old Challenges And New Debates, Roozbeh (Rudy) B. Baker
Roozbeh (Rudy) B. Baker
This Article will survey the new scholarship that has emerged in international law to challenge the two traditional sources of customary norms, state practice and opinio juris. With the recent growth, in the international system, of self-contained international criminal tribunals, new challenges facing international law have emerged. Institutionally structured as self-contained legal regimes, international legal tribunals such as the ICTY, ICTR, and now the ICC have nevertheless contributed to a new paradigm within international law. The jurisprudence of these international criminal tribunals, on a wide range of international legal questions, has slowly begun to be elevated into norms of customary …

Repeated Contracts For Supply Chain Coordination: A Review And Future Directions, R K Amit, Peeyush Mehta

Supply chain coordination with contracts has emerged as one of the key strategies to reduce the inefficiencies arising from conflicting objectives of agents in a supply chain. In this paper, we critically analyze the literature on repeated contracts that are designed for mitigating inefficiencies in supply chains. We also provide some directions for future research in repeated contracts for supply chain coordination.

This discussion is about the neglected concepts of trust and social responsibility on the Internet. I will discuss and explain the concepts and their implications to people and society. I then address the issue of moral and social responsibilities of ISPs and web-hosting companies. I argue that ISPs and web-hosting companies should aspire to take responsibility for content and that they should respect and abide by their own terms of conduct.

Are Profits From Subdivision Development Higher In Areas With More Regulations? A Case Study Of South Kingstown, Rhode Island And Some Implications For Land Use Planning, Rayman Mohamed

Little is known about the relationship between regulations and profits from residential subdivision development. This article presents data that for the first time determines profits from subdivision development in a heavily-regulated market. This study found an average profit, measured by internal rates of return, of 29 percent, comfortably above what scholars consider normal. Profits decreased as time increased to complete the subdivision. Profits also decreased because of delays due to regulations and voluntary delays by developers. These results suggest that implementing smart growth policies may be challenging in more-regulated areas and easier in less-regulated areas. The findings suggest that higher …

This article analyzes the World University Ranking of the Times Higher Education, one of the most important and famous international rankings, with a special emphasis on the how this ranking has been designed and methodologically built up. Starting from a longitudinal study the authors analyze the regional distribution and the linguistic affinities, and the institutional mobility as well, including the variability of the first 200 universities in each edition of this ranking (between 2004 and 2009). Within this context the authors study more specifically how the universities of Latin America behave. And based on the previous reflections the Times Higher …

Daarnaast …
