The Synthesis, Structure, And Properties Of Group 2 Poly(Pyrazolyl)Borates And Their Use For The Atomic Layer Deposition Of Group 2 Borates, Mark J. Saly

Wayne State University Dissertations

A series of heavy alkaline earth complexes containing TpR2-based ligands has been synthesized, structurally characterized, and their properties were investigated. Salt metathesis routes involving MI2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) with either KTpEt2 or KTpnPr2 afforded MTpEt22 or MTpnPr22 in good to moderate yields. All of these complexes are volatile and exceptionally thermally stable, and have acceptable properties for use as group 2 atomic layer deposition (ALD) precursors. In addition, a series of group 2 complexes containing BpR2-based ligand systems were synthesized. Treatment of MI2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) with two equivalents of TlBptBu2, KBp, and KBpiPr2 in tetrahydrofuran at ambient ...

Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystal Assembly: From Synthesis To Applications, Qinghong Yao 2010 Wayne State University

Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystal Assembly: From Synthesis To Applications, Qinghong Yao

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation study is focused on (1) the application of an oxidation-induced sol-gel assembly method to formation of CdTe aerogels; (2) extension of existing aerogel compositions and properties by an alternative synthetic approach: cation-exchange reactions; and (3) probing the functionality of CdSe aerogels as optical sensors of Lewis base analytes.

Highly porous CdTe aerogels were successfully synthesized by sol-gel assembly of CdTe nanocrystals with thiolate or nonthiolate (phosphine oxide) ligated surfaces by treatment with tetranitromethane. Both phosphine oxide-capped and the thiolate-capped aerogels exhibit similar structure, morphology and porosimetry properties, suggesting that precursor ligation does not have a no major effect ...

A Bioarchaeological Study Of A Prehistoric Michigan Population: Fraaer-Tyra Site (20sa9), Allison June Muhammad

Wayne State University Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The Saginaw Valley Region has been the focus of Michigan archaeology for many decades. The Late Woodland period of the Saginaw Valley has been characterized as an area that prehistoric people abandoned as a permanent resident, but exploited seasonally during times of scarcity. Furthermore, the valley's resources were exploited by a diverse group of prehistoric peoples, both native to Michigan and those Mississippian `intruders' (Halsey 1976; Holman and Brashler 1999; Norder et al. 2003; Stothers 1999). Though previous studies of the Frazer-Tyra site (20SA9) have included ceramic and lithic analysis (Andrews 1995; Halsey 1976) and a study of ...

Synthesis And Characterization Of Metal Complexes Containing Tetrazolate, Poly(Tetrazolyl)Borate, And Aryl Pentazole Ligands As High Energy Density Materials, Dongmei Lu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Heavier alkaline earth metal tetrazolates have been prepared as cryatals contain aqua ligands and as anhydrous powders, and were characterized by spectral and analytical methods. Potassium bis(tetrazolyl)borate complexes K(BH2(RCN4)2)(H2O)n (R = H, Me, NMe2, and NiPr2) and their 18-crown-6 adducts have been synthesized. In the solid state, complexes where R = H and Me have B-N bonds to the nitrogen atoms proximal to the carbon atom, whereas those with R = NMe2 and NiPr2 possess isomeric B-N bonds to the nitrogen atoms distal to the core carbon. With ...

The reaction of oximes to amides, known as the Beckmann rearrangement, may undergo fragmentation to form carbocations + nitriles instead of amides when the cations have reasonable stability. The reactions of oxime derivatives of 1-substituted-phenyl-2-propanones and 3-substituted-phenyl-2-butanones in aqueous solvents gave both rearrangement and fragmentation products, the ratio of which was dependent on substituents. Transition state (TS) optimizations and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculations for the reaction of 1-phenyl-2-propanone oximes showed that there is a single TS for each substituted compound. The IRC path from the TS either led to a rearrangement product or a fragmentation product depending on the substituent ...

Trace Gas And Particle Emissions From Domestic And Industrial Biofuel Use And Garbage Burning In Central Mexico, Ted J. Christian, Robert Yokelson, B. Cardenas, L. T. Molina, G. Engling, S. C. Hsu

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

In central Mexico during the spring of 2007 we measured the initial emissions of 12 gases and the aerosol speciation for elemental and organic carbon (EC, OC), anhydrosugars, Cl(-), NO(3)(-), and 20 metals from 10 cooking fires, four garbage fires, three brick making kilns, three charcoal making kilns, and two crop residue fires. Global biofuel use has been estimated at over 2600 Tg/y. With several simple case studies we show that cooking fires can be a major, or the major, source of several gases and fine particles in developing countries. Insulated cook stoves with chimneys were earlier shown ...

Safe and cost-effective experiments were designed for high school students to enhance their laboratory skills and knowledge on polarity and separation of mixtures. Annatto, Spanish paprika and turmeric were extracted yielding red-orange, light red-orange and yellow color, respectively. These were combined with a blue aqueous solution made from food color resulting to green mixtures. These were all extracted with kerosene or oil/kerosene. The non-polar solutes for each mixture combined with the kerosene or oil/kerosene layer, making the polar phase blue again. Students gained a better understanding of the concepts as shown in their laboratory report and test results.

It is well known that conversion of Si(111)-(7×7) into the (√3×√3)R30° phase of adsorbed Ag requires a change in the Si density, and causes formation of islands and holes at the surface. By mass balance, the ratio of areas of islands and holes (RIH) should be approximately 1. However, we find that the ratio is significantly higher, depending on preparation conditions. A possible explanation would be that there are different types of (√3×√3)R30° structures. However, neither scanning tunneling microscopy nor density-functional theory (implemented as a genetic algorithm search) supports this explanation. We ...

Structure-Activity Relationships Of Pai-1 Inhibitors, Karen Sanders 2010 Eastern Michigan University

Structure-Activity Relationships Of Pai-1 Inhibitors, Karen Sanders

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The inhibition of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is anticipated to increase our understanding of various human ailments with which high levels of PAI-1 have been associated, including diabetes, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Previous accounts have reported the synthesis of inhibitors that bind to PAI-1 with a low affinity, inhibit the serpin plasma protein antithrombin III, and/or fail to inhibit PAI-1 when vitronectin, a cofactor of PAI-1 is present. The synthesis of small-molecule inhibitors of PAI-1 that improve upon these properties has been the main goal of this research. Research efforts focused on examining changes in inhibitor potency based on the ...
