UCHC Articles - Research
Progesterone Receptor Membrane Component-1 (PGRMC1) is present in both the cytoplasm and nucleus of spontaneously immortalized granulosa cells (SIGCs). PGRMC1 is detected as a monomer in the cytoplasm and a DTT-resistant PGRMC1 dimer in the nucleus. Transfected PGRMC1-GFP localizes mainly to the cytoplasm and does not form a DTT-resistant dimer. Moreover, forced expression of PGRMC1-GFP increases the sensitivity of the SIGCs to progesterone (P4) 's anti-apoptotic action, indicating that the PGRMC1 monomer is functional. However, when endogenous PGRMC1 is depleted by siRNA treatment and replaced with PGRMC1-GFP, P4 responsiveness is not enhanced, although overall levels of PGRMC1 are increased. P4's …

Aim
This paper examines patient’s desire for prayer from their health care providers and looks at the difference in prayer frequency between religious and non-religious based hospitals.
Background
Continued debate surrounds this concept: How much spiritual care should be integrated into the medical field? Many theorists have included spirituality as an integral part to holistic care. Therefore healthcare providers should address prayer and spirituality.
Method
A convenience sampling of 93 patients was taken from a government and a religious based hospital in southeastern Tennessee. The questionnaire used was specifically designed for the study. Information collected included demographics, religious affiliation, habits …

Psychology Of Sport Injury : A Holistic Approach To Rehabilitating The Injured Athlete, Jennifer Jordan Utley
Athletic Training Collection
Sports medicine practitioners must consider both physical and mental aspects of injury to fully rehabilitate the injured athlete. The psychological distress that follows injury has been well documented and calls for a change in the rehabilitation of injured athletes.1-3 With the recent emergence of sport psychology and the emphasis on competitive sport in the United States and beyond, psychological skills are no longer solely utilized by the elite athlete; college and high school athletes are gaining instruction in the use of psychological skills from sport psychologists, coaches, and fellow teammates. Psychological skills have been shown to be effective in …

Everything's Better In Moderation: Young Women's Gender Role Attitudes And Risky Sexual Behavior, Tamara Leech
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose This study examines the association between gender role attitudes and risky sexual behavior among young women. Previous studies have posed seemingly contradictory arguments: that either traditional attitudes or egalitarian attitudes are associated with riskier behavior. Methods Data are based on the children of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, representing 520 sexually active 18–19-year-old women. Propensity radius matching was used to assess differences in rates of multiple sexual partners and sex outside of a committed relationship. Results Relative to moderate gender role attitudes, both egalitarian gender role attitudes and traditional gender role attitudes are associated with higher rates of …

Rna-Dependent Selenocysteine Biosynthesis In Eukaryotes And Archaea, Sotiria Palioura
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Selenocysteine (Sec), the 21st genetically encoded amino acid, is the major metabolite of the micronutrient selenium. Sec is inserted into nascent proteins in response to a UGA codon. The substrate for ribosomal protein synthesis is selenocysteinyl-tRNASec. While the formation of Sec-tRNASec from seryl-tRNASec by a single bacterial enzyme selenocysteine synthase (SelA) has been well described, the mechanism of Sec-tRNASec formation in archaea and eukaryotes remained poorly understood. Herein, biochemical and genetic data provide evidence that, in contrast to bacteria, eukaryotes and archaea utilize a different route to Sec-tRNASec that requires the tRNASec-dependent conversion of O-phosphoserine (Sep) to Sec. In this …

A Passive Pure Moment Protocol For Testing Spine Segments: Development And Application, Kyle David Fraysur
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The pure moment protocol is the accepted standard for performing in-vitro biomechanical testing of spinal devices. Published studies predominantly report range of motion and flexibility data, but information regarding the segment center of rotation is also relevant. Most current pure moment platforms are not sensitive enough to accurately calculate the instantaneous axis of rotation (IAR) for a segment throughout a bending motion. The purpose of this study was to simulate a pure moment protocol using a programmable spine robot, and use the data gathered to calculate the IAR for harvested specimen and those implanted with a constrained total disc replacement …

The Provision Of Mental Health Services By Rural Health Clinics, John A. Gale Ms, Stephanie L. Loux Ms, Barbara Shaw Jd, David Hartley Phd, Mha
Rural Health Clinics
The number of Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) providing specialty mental health services remains limited. This study examined changes in the delivery of mental health services by RHCs, their operational characteristics, barriers to the development of services, and policy options to encourage more RHCs to deliver mental health services. Key Findings: Approximately 6% of independent and 2% of provider-based RHCs offer mental health services by doctoral-level psychologists and/or clinical social workers. Models used to provide mental health services include contracted and/or employed clinicians housed in the same facility as primary care providers. A key element in the development of mental health …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) guide Argonaute (AGO)-containing microribonucleoprotein (miRNP) complexes to target mRNAs.It has been assumed that miRNAs behave similarly to each other with regard to mRNA target recognition. The usual assumptions, which are based on prior studies, are that miRNAs target preferentially sequences in the 3'UTR of mRNAs,guided by the 5' "seed" portion of the miRNAs. Here we isolated AGO- and miRNA-containing miRNPs from human H4 tumor cells by co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP) with anti-AGO antibody. Cells were transfected with miR-107, miR-124,miR-128, miR-320, or a negative control miRNA. Co-IPed RNAs were subjected to downstream high-density Affymetrix Human Gene 1.0 ST microarray analyses using …

Women's Softball In Iran: An Autoethnographic Journey, Sarah J Hillyer
Doctoral Dissertations
This autoethnographic dissertation recounts numerous untold stories about my journeys into the Islamic Republic of Iran as a sports consultant and women’s softball coach for Global Sports Partners (GSP). Autoethnography as defined by Ellis & Bochner (2000), is “an autobiographical genre of writing and research that displays multiple layers of consciousness, connecting the personal to the cultural…Autoethnographers vary in their emphasis on the research process (graphy), on culture (ethnos), and on self (auto)” (pp. 739-740). Autoethnographers, writing within a branch of narrative inquiry (Ellis & Bochner, 2000), believe in the power of story and that humans learn through stories lived …

The Mechanisms Of Muscle Hypertrophy And Their Application To Resistance Training, Brad Schoenfeld
College of Arts & Sciences
The quest to increase lean body mass is widely pursued by those who lift weights. Research is lacking, however, as to the best approach for maximizing exercise-induced muscle growth. Bodybuilders generally train with moderate loads and fairly short rest intervals that induce high amounts of metabolic stress. Powerlifters, on the other hand, routinely train with high intensity loads and lengthy rest periods between sets. While both groups are known to display impressive muscularity, it is not clear which method is superior for hypertrophic gains, or whether other training methods may perhaps show superiority. Therefore, the purpose of this proposed paper …

Assessing The Sensitivity Of The Canadian Adverse Event Following Immunization Surveillance System ( Caefiss), Mina Tadrous
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Background: Vaccines are important to public health, but because of the way they are manufactured, their mechanism of action, and their indicated population, careful monitoring of their adverse events is necessary. Canada has a national surveillance system that collects reports on adverse events that may be associated with vaccine administration. Sensitivity is one of the tools used with surveillance systems to study the extent and characteristics of reporting of a surveillance system. To date, the sensitivity of the Canadian system has not been assessed.
Purpose: To assess the sensitivity of the Canadian Adverse Event Following Immunization Surveillance System …
