Extracellular Matrix Of The Charophycean Green Algae, Sarah Nelson Kiemle 2010 Michigan Technological University

Extracellular Matrix Of The Charophycean Green Algae, Sarah Nelson Kiemle

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A comprehensive knowledge of cell wallstructure and function throughout the plant kingdom is essential to understanding cell wall evolution. The fundamental understanding of the charophycean green algal cell wall is broadening. The similarities and differences that exist between land plant and algal cell walls provide opportunities to understand plant evolution. A variety of polymers previously associated with higher plants were discovered in the charophycean green algae (CGA), including homogalacturonans, cross-linking glycans, arabinogalactan protein, β-glucans, and cellulose. The cellulose content of CGA cell walls ranged from 6% to 43%, with the higher valuescomparable to that found in the primary cell wall …

2010 Tropical Coral Reefs (Appendix 10), Joana Figueiredo 2010 Universidade de Lisboa

2010 Tropical Coral Reefs (Appendix 10), Joana Figueiredo

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

SUMMARY

  • Coral reef ecosystems are global biodiversity hotspots that depend on the massive calcium carbonate structures mainly deposited by scleractinian (i.e., “hard”) corals. Scleractinian coral distribution is primarily limited by sea-surface temperature, light, depth, ocean pH, sea water salinity, nutrients and sediment loads. These ecosystems are currently threatened by localized stresses such as overfishing and destructive fishing practices, pollution, terrestrial nutrient and sediment run-off, but are increasing impacted by direct and indirect impacts of rising CO2 concentrations and climate change.
  • Coral reefs provide a broad range of ecosystems services with high socio-economic value: tourism, fisheries (food and employment), nutrient cycling, …

A Quantitative Description Of The Vocalizations And Vocal Activity Of The Barred Owl, Karan J. Odom, Daniel J. Mennill 2010 University of Windsor

A Quantitative Description Of The Vocalizations And Vocal Activity Of The Barred Owl, Karan J. Odom, Daniel J. Mennill

Biological Sciences Publications

Barred Owls (Strix varia) are highly vocal and perform a diverse array of vocalizations. They are often monitored by acoustic surveys, yet Barred Owl vocalizations and vocal behavior are poorly described. We present a detailed analysis of Barred Owl vocal behavior with four goals: (1) to provide a quantitative description of Barred Owl vocalizations, including those given within duets, (2) to examine diel variation in vocal output for multiple vocalizations, (3) to explore the use of vocalizations inside and outside of duets, and (4) to identify sex-specific vocal characteristics and discuss their utility in identifying an owl's sex. Adult Barred …

Environmental Factors Associated With Reproductive Barrier Breakdown In Sympatric Trout Populations On Vancouver Island, Daniel D. Heath, Cory M. Bettles, Derek Roff 2010 University of Windsor

Environmental Factors Associated With Reproductive Barrier Breakdown In Sympatric Trout Populations On Vancouver Island, Daniel D. Heath, Cory M. Bettles, Derek Roff

Biological Sciences Publications

The incidence of hybridization between coastal cutthroat (Oncorhynchus clarki clarki) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) varies widely among populations. The breakdown of reproductive isolation is of concern to managers, and raises the question: how have the two species retained their genetic and morphological divergence? Using a combination of mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA markers coupled with watershed attribute and disturbance data, we determined the distribution and frequency of trout hybridization on Vancouver Island, BC and the environmental factors associated with the hybridization. We found 284 hybrids (among 1004 fish) in 29 of 36 sampled populations. High variation in levels of …

Interleukin-6 Increases Expression And Secretion Of Cathepsin B By Breast Tumor-Associated Monocytes., Mona M. Mohamed, Dora Cavallo-Medved, Deborah Rudy, Arulselvi Anbalagan, Bonnie F. Sloane, Kamir Moin 2010 University of Windsor

Interleukin-6 Increases Expression And Secretion Of Cathepsin B By Breast Tumor-Associated Monocytes., Mona M. Mohamed, Dora Cavallo-Medved, Deborah Rudy, Arulselvi Anbalagan, Bonnie F. Sloane, Kamir Moin

Biological Sciences Publications

In the tumor microenvironment, monocytes respond to paracrine stimuli from breast cancer cells by secreting molecules that participate in breast cancer growth, invasion, intravasation and metastasis. Here we examined the effects of media conditioned by MDA-MB-231 human breast carcinoma cells (231-CM) on expression and secretion of proteases and secretion of cytokines by U937 human monocytes. We found that 231-CM increased U937: 1) proliferation; 2) expression, activity and secretion of the cysteine protease cathepsin B (CTSB); 3) secretion of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9; and 4) secretion of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1). We further demonstrated by …

The Hippo Tumor Suppressor Pathway Regulates Intestinal Stem Cell Regeneration, Phillip Karpowicz, Jessica Perez, Norbert Perrimon 2010 University of Windsor

The Hippo Tumor Suppressor Pathway Regulates Intestinal Stem Cell Regeneration, Phillip Karpowicz, Jessica Perez, Norbert Perrimon

Biological Sciences Publications

Skip to Next Section Identification of the signaling pathways that control the proliferation of stem cells (SCs), and whether they act in a cell or non-cell autonomous manner, is key to our understanding of tissue homeostasis and cancer. In the adult Drosophila midgut, the Jun N-Terminal Kinase (JNK) pathway is activated in damaged enterocyte cells (ECs) following injury. This leads to the production of Upd cytokines from ECs, which in turn activate the Janus kinase (JAK)/Signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway in Intestinal SCs (ISCs), stimulating their proliferation. In addition, the Hippo pathway has been recently implicated in …

Nebraska Statewide Forest Resource Assessment & Strategy - 2010, Scott Josiah, John Erixson

Publications, etc. -- Nebraska Forest Service

This Assessment relies heavily on the input from our partners. To complete the Assessment, we bolstered our own forest resource data with publicly available data from a variety of sources, including the National Land Cover Dataset, USFS Spatial Analysis Project, U.S. Census Bureau, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nebraska Department of Roads, Nebraska Natural Resources Districts and input from many partners. Combined, this information provided us with valuable insights about the nature, complexity and value of our forest resources, and helped us identify priority forest areas across the state.

Using the information from the Assessment, we developed strategic goals based …

Sugar In Moderation: Sugar Diets Affect Short-Term Parasitoid Behaviour, Danielle Lightle, Mario Ambrosino, Jana C. Lee

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The biological control potential of parasitic wasps in the field is expected to increase with the provisioning of sugar sources, which increase longevity and replenish carbohydrate reserves. Apanteles aristoteliae is an important parasitoid of Argyrotaenia franciscana, the orange tortrix, an economic pest in fruit crops. In the present study, the effect of sugar diet on the physiological status of A. aristoteliae is investigated in the laboratory, as well as the effects of nutritional status on short-term olfactory orientation and parasitism behaviour, and the association between olfactory orientation and immediate parasitism activity. Levels of glycogen, fructose, total sugars, proportional weight …
