Effects Of Marketing Chicken Meat As A Whole Or Cut Up On Enterprise Income, Ferhan Kaygisiz, Yavuz Cevger

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

As research material, 521 broiler carcasses, 308 of which were cut up manually and 213 of which were cut up with machine, were used. The carcasses cut up were divided into 6 groups based on their weights. In both methods, the whole weights of the carcasses were determined first and recorded. After that, they were divided into 3 parts as wings, legs, and breast. It was found that the process of cutting up takes 12 s by hand and 50.5 s with machine. As a result of cutting up, net income increase was determined as 13.75% for manual cutting up …

The study was performed with 21 intact male dogs that had HS (n = 12) and signs of BPH (n = 9). DMA (Tardak® or Tardastrex®) was administered subcutaneously to each dog at a dose of 3-5 mg/kg and was repeated 15 days later as a second treatment. DMA administration was repeated in some cases until the clinical signs …

A Case Study Of The Clinical Form Of Johne’S Disease In A Heifer, AGNIESZKA WISZNIEWSK LASZCZYCH, JOANNA SZTEYN, ALEKSANDRA RUSZCZYNSKA 2010 TÜBİTAK

A Case Study Of The Clinical Form Of Johne’S Disease In A Heifer, Agnieszka Wiszniewsk Laszczych, Joanna Szteyn, Aleksandra Ruszczynska

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Johne's disease-paratuberculosis-affects domesticated and wild ruminants throughout the world. The first symptoms of the disease appear 6 months to 15 years after infection. The clinical stage of paratuberculosis usually occurs in older animals and is rare in those under 2 years of age. While performing analyses on a farm in the northeastern region of Poland a 2-year-old heifer that manifested symptoms of dyspepsia, proceeding with watery diarrhea, was observed. ELISA test (IDEXX) results demonstrated a positive serological reaction for paratuberculosis. Clinical examination, microbiological analysis of feces, autopsy, and histopathological examination confirmed the incidence of Johne's disease in the heifer.

The Performance Of A Small-Scale, High-Density, Continuous System For Culturing The Rotifer Brachionus Plicatilis, Umur Önal, İhsan Çeli̇k, Sebahatti̇n Ergün

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The performance of a high-density continuous system was evaluated as an alternative to conventional low-density batch-culture systems for culturing the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Rotifer densities ranging from 1700 to 3760 individuals/mL were achieved in 4 different trials that lasted 10-18 days. Problems associated with NH_3-N and pH were controlled by increasing the water exchange rate and periodic addition of ammonia remover. While NH_3-N and pH values were 0-8.8 mg/L and 6.9-9.3, respectively, the most important problem was the accumulation of TSS at concentrations of up to 85 mL/L within a very short time after start-up. Further studies are required to …

Ticks are obligate blood sucker arthropods that infect animals and humans. A common tortoise tick, Hyalomma aegyptium, was collected from a young and an adult male hedgehog, Erinaceus concolor, from Central Anatolia in July 2008. More ticks were determined on the young one. This is the second record of tortoise tick that parasitizes a hedgehog.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Six days after transfer of eyed stage rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) eggs into an incubator, egg mortality occurred during the winter of 2007. During the outbreak, approximately 30% of the eggs died. Rheocricotopus fuscipes (Kieffer, 1909) and Eukiefferiella claripennis (Lundbeck, 1898) (subfamily Orthocladiinae), Chironomid midge larvae were observed on the eggs by examining the eggs under the microscope. Histological sections of the infested eggs exhibited midge bite marks. This is the first report of Chironomid midges preying on fish eggs.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A crossbred Jersey cow had been suffering from severe pain for 3 days due to a corneal foreign body. Tranquilization using intravenous triflupromazine (20 mg) followed by Peterson nerve block with 2% lidocaine hydrochloride (13 mL) facilitated examination of the eye and removal of a 12-mm-long (7 mm penetrated plus 5 mm protruding out) dry plant awn from the cornea. Corneal opacity was noted around the puncture site. Direct ophthalmoscopy did not reveal any abnormality in the ocular media. Topical gentamycin (3 mg/mL) and systemic gentamycin (5 mg/kg), along with meloxicam (0.2 mg/kg) for 3 days, followed (on the basis …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This preliminary report describes the occurrence of acute pulmonary emphysema cum pulmonary edema ensuing in extensive subcutaneous emphysematous swellings in a dairy buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) apparently associated with a sudden shift from berseem (Trifolium alexendrinum) to Brassica juncea fodder. Tachypnea, expiratory dyspnea, open-mouth breathing, loud expiratory grunt with abdominal lift, and crackles in ventral aspects of the lungs with normal rectal temperature characterized the condition clinically. A substantial improvement was noted 3 h after treatment with parenteral administration of prednisolone plus dexamethasone, diclofenac sodium, and furosemide. Per os administration of chlortetracycline was undertaken after dyspnea had abated. Extensive subcutaneous swellings …

Nasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma In A Cow, Ali Baniadam, Navid Moezzi, Babak Mohammadian

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A patient with a turgid, hemorrhagic mass infected by myiasis in the left nostril and diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is presented. Complete blood count (CBC) showed moderate neutrophilia and eosinophilia and vital signs were in normal range. After aseptic surgical preparations and local anesthesia, the mass removed en bloc and submitted to the Department of Veterinary Pathology for histopathological evaluation. SCC was recognized microscopically by identifying malignant epithelial cells demonstrating various degrees of differentiation towards keratinocytes.
