Tourism And Hospitality Small And Medium Enterprises And Environmental Sustainability, Abel Alonso, Alfred Ogle

While environmental sustainability is increasingly gaining relevance, it appears to have been ignored in certain areas, such as in research on water usage of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the hospitality and tourism industries. The purpose of this paper is to examine this dimension from the perspective of the operators. Semi-structured face-to-face and telephone interviews were conducted with ten managers/operators in the Swan Valley region of Western Australia. Strong manager/operator awareness of the impact of their actions on the environment was demonstrated. Also salient was the factors impinging on implementation of environmental initiatives. Business demands or added costs also …

The purpose of this paper is to examine the links between olive growing, hospitality and tourism in an emerging olive growing region, as well as challenges olive grove operators face. A qualitative approach is taken in the form of face-to-face and telephone interviews among 23 olive grove operators in Western Australia from a sample of 33 operations identified. Almost half of the respondents indicated being open to the public in some form, including ellar door sales and hospitality facilities, such as a cafe´. Other respondents are currently in the process of developing hospitality facilities or plan to be associated to …

Internationalisation Of Small And Medium New Zealand Wineries: An Exploratory Study, Abel Alonso
Internationalisation Of Small And Medium New Zealand Wineries: An Exploratory Study, Abel Alonso
Abel D Alonso
Internationalisation strategies, such as exports, present business and growth opportunities for many enterprises, including those small and medium. In recent years, many of these small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have become predominant in New Zealand’s burgeoning wine sector. Despite the importance that the growth of this group represents, in terms of their contribution to New Zealand’s economy, little has been reported to date small and medium winery operators, particularly from an academic perspective. Lack of academic research is obvious concerning operators’ involvement, intentions or perspectives on internationalisation strategies. This study examines these dimensions from a group of 82 small and …

Farmers's Relationship With Hospitality Businesses: A Preliminary Study, Abel Alonso
Farmers's Relationship With Hospitality Businesses: A Preliminary Study, Abel Alonso

Numerous advantages exist for farmers as food producers and for restaurateurs as food sellers to be engaged in business relationships. While in many situations such relationships would seem a very “natural” process that would also benefit consumers, to date very little research has been conducted in examining the extent to which farmers are engaged in such relationships. The present paper aims to explore these areas from the farmers’ perspective. Semi-structured telephone interviews and two on-site face-to-face interviews were conducted among 30 farm owners/operators in the state of Alabama, USA. A very weak relationship was noticed between farms and hotels/restaurants in …

Thailand is currently putting considerable effort into their attempts to attract a new type of traveller, the medical tourist, to visit their destination for a combination of health, medical and travel purposes. While significant research effort has been devoted to the ethical and legal issues related to medical tourism, relative limited research has focussed on the destination decision making process of people who choose to engage in medical tourism. This paper presents the results of an online survey which explores the travel motivations, information search behavior and destination choice criteria of a sample of prospective medical tourists to Thailand.

Is Physical Activity Leisure Or Work? Exploring The Leisure-Tourism-Physical Activity Relationship With Holidaymakers On Rottnest Island, Ruth Sibson, Pascal Scherrer, Maria Ryan, Nadine Henley, Lynnaire Sheridan
Maria M Ryan
To help overcome preventable health problems in the developed world, the 'active living' concept seeks to stimulate people's physical activity in every day environments. This study contributes to the understanding of the leisure-tourism-physical activity relationship by investigating the self-reported physical activity of holiday makers on Rottnest Island, Western Australia, compared to their home environment. The quantitative analysis of 41 participant interviews on behaviour, motivation and constraints revealed that physical activity was seen as leisure on Rottnest but work at home. A uniquely attractive and easily accessible environment and positive social interactions were key contributors to participation in physical activity.

Global Corporate Challenge Qualitative Research Project: The Effect Of A Workplace Team Initiative On Participants' Motivation To Sustain A Physical Activity Program, Nadine Henley, Pascal Scherrer, Ruth Sibson, Lynnaire Sheridan, Susanne Bahn, Maria Ryan, Raguragavan Ganeshasundaram

Physical inactivity is one of the major contributors to ill health and, hence, productivity costs in Australia. While the workplace is increasingly recognised as an appropriate site for promoting healthy behaviour, the effectiveness of workplace physical activity programs remains to be demonstrated, particularly with regards to participants' motivation to achieve sustained positive physical activity behaviour change. This exploratory study examined how participation in the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) affected participants' motivation to sustain regular physical activity. The GCC is a commercially operated four-month program based on the 10,000 steps-a-day concept. Three distinct phases in terms of participant motivation were identified …

Many holiday destinations provide people with different social, cultural and natural environments that promote opportunities for participation in a range of physical activities. Holiday-makers also generally have more commitment-free time which can provide for increased levels of physical activity. There has, however, been limited research which explores the link between holiday-makers and physical activity and, more specifically, how an individual’s leisure behaviour is influenced by their social and physical environments. This paper explores people’s physical activity experiences on the popular, and fairly unique, holiday destination of Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth, WA. Thirty intercept interviews were conducted with …

Image Formation Information Sources And An Iconic Australian Tourist Destination, Janet Hanlan, Stephen Kelly
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
Tourist destination brand image is a major influencing factor in traveller destination choice. This exploaratory research into the information sources form which destination brand image evolves provides insights which have the potential to improve tourism destination brand development strategies. In-depth interview with 21 international backpackers on Australia's northern NSW coast indicate that mainstream media play little or no part in the formation of respondents' image of the coastal destination of Byron Bay. Rather, word of mouth and autonomous independent information sources were the key media through which respondents formed their image of this iconic Australian tourist destination. Findings also show …

Non-Local Masters Games Participants: An Investigation Of Copmpetitive Active Sport Tourist Motives, Pat Gillett, Stephen Kelly
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
Many governments within Australia actively support Masters Games with the expectation that such events generate significant economic benefits. However, while research demonstrates that 'non-local' participants provide greater economic value to the host region, little is known about this key participant category. In particular, previous Masters Games research has only briefly considered the influence of travel on participant motives. In order to address this gap in the literature, a qualitative investigation of the motives among non-local Masters Games participants was undertaken. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 non-local competitors prior to their participation in the 2005 Australian Masters Games. The …

Burnout And Perceived Organisational Support Among Frontline Hospitality Employees, Gabrielle Walters, Michael Raybould
Michael Raybould
This article describes research designed to investigate the relationship between burnout and perceived organisational support (POS) among front-line hospitality employees. Three hundred front-line employees of a multisite hospitality firm were surveyed using an instrument comprising the general survey version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the 17-item version of the Survey of Perceived Organisational Support (POS). Significant relationships were found between POS and each of the three burnout dimensions of exhaustion, cynicism and personal efficacy. The findings of this study contribute to the existing academic literature and provide hospitality managers with a better understanding of the factors that contribute to …
