Student2Scholar (S2S) is a fully online and open course that aims to teach academic literacies and research skills to social science graduate students. Set to launch in December 2015, S2S was conceived of and created by a diverse and distributed team of academic librarians, university staff, and graduate students from three Ontario Universities: Western, the University of Toronto, and Queen’s. Members of the project team brought with them varying degrees of experience and expertise across a range of disciplinary and teaching and learning backgrounds, including: adult education, information literacy, and online learning (to name only a few).

Purpose: This paper shares possible opportunities for librarians, faculty, and students with access to Google Classroom, and includes a discussion of its application and functionality in formation literacy sessions.

Design/methodology/approach: This article describes the functionality of Google Classroom with a review of its capabilities for providing information literacy instruction based upon hands-on use in several classes and observation.

Findings: Google Classroom streamlined delivery of materials with students in one-time and multi-meeting classes. Students appreciated its seamless integration with their university email accounts.

This poster reports on qualitative analysis of 97 first-year student essays generated from an information literacy exercise designed collaboratively by four academic support units at DePaul University in Fall 2013. Working as an ACRL Assessment in Action team, the Library, Writing Center, Office for Academic Advising, and Center for Students with Disabilities integrated a library experience into an academic skills unit led by peer mentors. The flipped classroom that started in K-12 has now caught the attention of higher education as a way of encouraging deeper and more meaningful learning for students.
This presentation will demonstrate how, by using an Articulate Storyline SCORM package within the Desire2Learn platform, librarians and instructors flipped the information literacy training session.

Despite ongoing interest in deploying Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for sustainable development, their use in climate change adaptation remains under-studied. Based on the integration of adaptation theory and the existing literature on the use of ICTs in development, we present an analytical model for conceptualizing the contribution of existing ICTs to adaptation, and a framework for evaluating ICT success. We apply the framework to four case studies of ICTs in use for early warning systems and managing extreme events in LAC countries. Librarians have been refining their information literacy assessment methods since the 1990′s closely tying these assessment measures to clearly articulated learning outcomes as defined in the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. An assessment plan was developed and implemented in conjunction with four information literacy sessions offered to students enrolled in a required course in the Women’s Studies Undergraduate Program at the University of Western Ontario. Hear how one librarian implemented an assessment plan and what she learned in the process. Results of this research will inform how best to assess library instruction in support of undergraduate student learning.

This presentation will give an overview of the structure for embedding information literacy into Loyola Marymount University’s new core curriculum. The curriculum map for information literacy throughout the first-year core courses will be displayed, with an emphasis on how the performance indicators are iterative and help build a foundation for more advanced skills. Also, the first-year information literacy assessment plan, which ranges from mandatory online tutorials to a series of graded research assignments, will be presented. In 1906, sociologist Georg Simmel wrote that secrecy «secures, so to speak, the possibility of a second world alongside of the obvious world»[2]. In this article, I explore Simmel's second world of secrecy and its relationship to Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Technology is often thought of as «autonomous»[3], independent of human influence, and ethically neutral[4]. Through various examples, I hope to convince my readers that it is also political, and assists in not only maintaining freedom of information and expression, but secrecy as the consciously willed or intentional concealment of information[5].
