Mental Health Is Wealth Too: Did The Affordable Care Act Medicaid Expansion Improve Mental Health Outcomes?, Dereck Wang
Mental Health Is Wealth Too: Did The Affordable Care Act Medicaid Expansion Improve Mental Health Outcomes?, Dereck Wang
Honors Theses
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has greatly exacerbated mental health, which has long been a growing problem in the United States; poor mental health not only jeopardizes the well-being of Americans but also has severe implications for America’s economy. Not only do mental health conditions have significant costs of treatment, but the absenteeism, presenteeism, early retirement, and mortality stemming from poor mental health also severely impact productivity. One health policy that could alleviate this problem is Medicaid expansion. The Affordable Care Act gave states the choice to expand Medicaid eligibility for individuals with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty …
How Presidential Disapproval Affects Bitcoin Returns: A Product Of The President, Joseph Libretti
How Presidential Disapproval Affects Bitcoin Returns: A Product Of The President, Joseph Libretti
Honors Theses
There has been a growing fascination for decentralized electronic assets, and Bitcoin has emerged as the face and leader of the movement. There have been three different presidents coinciding with the growth of Bitcoin. Since the creation of Bitcoin, each president has faced periods of net disapproval, and these periods have been the norm throughout Obama’s, Trump’s, and Biden’s presidencies. There is currently no existing literature on Presidential ratings as a predictor of Bitcoin, however, there has been research on the predictors of Bitcoin and Presidential ratings as a predictor of financial markets. I hypothesized that increases in net disapproval …
The Effects Of Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries On Local Opioid Mortality, Patrick Morrison
The Effects Of Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries On Local Opioid Mortality, Patrick Morrison
Honors Theses
This study examines how recreational marijuana dispensaries in Colorado affect opioid mortality at the county level. Using a difference-in-difference model with county and year fixed effects, I estimate the impact of recreational marijuana dispensary access on fatal opioid overdoses. Additionally, I employ distance from a major roadway and border as two instrumental variables to help limit the endogeneity associated with the location of dispensaries. Previous studies have shown that medical and recreational marijuana dispensary access decreases opioid mortality at the state level. Still, no study has explored the connection between recreational marijuana dispensaries and overdoses at the county level. Using …
The Effect Of Artificial Intelligence Implementation On Total Factor Productivity, Matthew Toy
The Effect Of Artificial Intelligence Implementation On Total Factor Productivity, Matthew Toy
Honors Theses
Investment in and availability of artificial intelligence has become a central concern for most developed economies because of is expected positive impact on an economy. Unlike other forms of capital investment, investment in AI may lead to innovative products and processes that should increase productivity. However, AI’s overall effect on productivity remains largely unknown. Adopting AI replaces labor with capital, which will have a positive effect on labor productivity, but overall productivity may remain the same or even decrease. I look at the impact of AI implementation on Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in order to assess its effect on the …
Using Difference-In-Differences Analysis And The Kocyk Geometric Lag Model To Estimate Aspects Of Carbon Tax Effectiveness In Nordic Countries, Kyle Riley
Honors Theses
This paper generally looks at the connections between carbon taxes and carbon emission levels in Nordic countries over a period from the 1960s to the early 2010s. Most of the existing literature on this topic looks at and finds that carbon taxes do have a significant impact upon carbon emissions levels in some countries while not in others. In many countries which have this policy there is not a significant impact that can be seen and there is a discussion as to why this might be the case and what needs to be done to fix these potential issues to …
How Did Medicaid Expansion Affect The Provider Labor Market?, Aaron Wu
How Did Medicaid Expansion Affect The Provider Labor Market?, Aaron Wu
Honors Theses
One provision of the Affordable Care Act was to expand Medicaid eligibility for a greater number of low-income patients. The resulting increase in demand for care was largely explored, but the effect of the 2014 Medicaid expansion on the physician and advanced practitioner labor market has not been well researched by economists. Using pooled cross-sectional data from the 2010 – 2018 American Community Surveys, this paper examines whether the Medicaid expansion has caused notable changes in physician, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner hours, compensation, and overall employment. The literature shows that practices that employ nurse practitioners are far more likely …
The Incidence Of Intra-State Violence: An Empirical Study On Ethnicity And Values, Kevin Fitzpatrick
The Incidence Of Intra-State Violence: An Empirical Study On Ethnicity And Values, Kevin Fitzpatrick
Honors Theses
FITZPATRICK, KEVIN R. The Incidence of Intrastate Conflict: An Empirical Study on Ethnicity and Values. Department of Economics and Political Science, June 2019.
ADVISORS: Jeeten Giri, Lori Marso
What best explains conflict? Why do societies engage in violence, or better yet, why are some societies more likely to fall victim towards internal instability and civil war? This paper seeks to better understand what factors offer the most explanatory power for intra-state violence. Utilizing Geert Hofstede’s 6-D model of cultural dimensions, I construct a data set incorporating intra-state data from the Uppsala Conflict Data Program/Peace Research Institute of Oslo to determine …
A Cross County Examination Of Fiscal Federalism In The 2016 Election, Sarah Kaplan
A Cross County Examination Of Fiscal Federalism In The 2016 Election, Sarah Kaplan
Honors Theses
The 2016 election has often been referred to as one of the most unorthodox elections in United States history. Both major candidates had their own unusual qualities about them. Hillary Clinton was the first woman to receive a major party’s nomination. Donald Trump ran with no political experience, using a rhetoric that was foreign to the established political world. And yet, Donald Trump did the unthinkable and was elected to the highest office in the nation. He triggered a voice that many felt was silenced in recent years. By laughing in the face of political correctness, and speaking about what …
The Business Cycle And Health: An Analysis Of How Macroeconomic Conditions Impact Health Outcomes In The U.S., Talitha Kumaresan
The Business Cycle And Health: An Analysis Of How Macroeconomic Conditions Impact Health Outcomes In The U.S., Talitha Kumaresan
Honors Theses
The U.S. spends about twice as much per person on healthcare, yet the disease burden remains higher in the U.S. than in comparable countries (Sawyer and Cox 2018; Sawyer and Gonzales 2017). Although health status is perceived to be an outcome of individual decision making, the business cycle also affects health. While the effect of macroeconomic shocks on health outcomes has been studied extensively, results remain inconclusive. This analysis uses longitudinal data over 30 years and panel data models to examine the effect of macroeconomic conditions on obesity, diabetes, hypertension, depression, congestive heart failure, and heart attack or myocardial infarction. …
Solar Energy For The Soul: Solving America’S Fuel Poverty Problem With Solar Panels For The Poor, Samantha St. Marie
Solar Energy For The Soul: Solving America’S Fuel Poverty Problem With Solar Panels For The Poor, Samantha St. Marie
Honors Theses
In the United States today, at least 14 million Americans live in fuel poverty. These Americans spend at least ten percent of household income on energy costs ranging from fuel to electricity. The purpose of this thesis is to identify an innovative solution to mitigate the effects of the energy affordability crisis in the United States. After examining national trends and researching localized efforts, I determined that solar panels may be able to support the modern energy needs of the fuel poor. The study uses a least squares regression model with fixed effects to determine factors influencing solar adoption at …
Does Player Performance Outside Of Major League Baseball Translate To The Mlb?, Ian Vogt
Does Player Performance Outside Of Major League Baseball Translate To The Mlb?, Ian Vogt
Honors Theses
Statistical analysis has transformed the way front offices across Major League Baseball manage the rosters of their teams. However, much of this statistical analysis is limited to evaluating players playing in the American major league environment. Little has been done in the way of using statistical analysis to evaluate how performance translates from league-to-league, and the market for international and college players remains highly inefficient, despite expansion of these player pools. My study is an attempt to make this market a more efficient one.
I measure the correlation between performance in two top international baseball leagues (Nippon Professional Baseball and …
Marriage, Religion, And Women's Happiness, Aaron Gordon
Marriage, Religion, And Women's Happiness, Aaron Gordon
Honors Theses
This thesis studies the effect of six major religions (Catholicism, Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism) on the gender marriage gap and the gender gap in the happiness payoff associated with marriage. Becker (1974) developed a theory on marriage claiming that individuals seek to maximize their utility through marriage. However, in some religions, individuals are coerced into marriage or have an arranged marriage, and thus, it is unlikely that such individuals’ marriage choices reflect their preferences. This paper uses data from the World Values Survey to examine whether religious people’s marriage decisions are consistent with their preferences. The results show …
Do Preferential Trade Agreements Affect Us Exports? Empirical Evidence From Us Export Panel Data, Benjamin A. Fay
Do Preferential Trade Agreements Affect Us Exports? Empirical Evidence From Us Export Panel Data, Benjamin A. Fay
Honors Theses
The Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) created under the World Trade Organization in 1995 established minimum standards of intellectual property rights (IPRs) for member nations. Concurrently, the US has used preferential trade agreements (PTAs) to negotiate for stronger IPR protections within its trading partners.
This paper empirically accesses the effects of PTAs on US exports. I use a gravity model of trade to analyze changes in US exports to 19 trading partners who signed a PTA with the US during the period 1991-2015. I regress US exports on dummy (binary) variables that identify the signing and entry-into-force of …

The Impact Of Wealth And Sentiment On Consumption: Before And After The Great Recession, Joshua Schwartz
Honors Theses
I study the impact of consumer sentiment and the wealth effect on aggregate U.S. consumption before and after the Great Recession. First I will introduce a background of the 2008 financial crisis and some major factors leading up to it. I will discuss both the Michigan Consumer Sentiment index as well as the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence index. I will also discuss several measures of net worth relevant for my study. Second I will discuss the relevant literature and the main findings that correspond to my thesis. Third I will present the methodology used for my thesis and the several …
Is Graduate School Worth It? Evaluating The Return On Investment In A Master's Degree., Kevin Paltat Tran
Is Graduate School Worth It? Evaluating The Return On Investment In A Master's Degree., Kevin Paltat Tran
Honors Theses
Pursuing a college degree is one of the most expensive financial investments that an individual makes during their lifetime. While several elements contribute to the increasing cost of obtaining a bachelor's degree research indicates that the wage premium of a college degree remains highly beneficial. Over a lifetime a bachelor's degree has an estimated worth of $2.8 million with a wage premium that is 84% greater than individuals holding just a high school diploma. The tremendous monetary returns and economic opportunities that are associated with a bachelor's degree lead to the question as to whether an advanced degree is necessary …
Acquirer Shareholder Value Creation In United States Mergers & Acquisitions, Kristen K. Landre
Acquirer Shareholder Value Creation In United States Mergers & Acquisitions, Kristen K. Landre
Honors Theses
Mergers and acquisitions remain the primary corporate growth strategy for executives around the world. While deals continue to rise in popularity, their success in generating value for participating firms remain uncertain. A vast majority of merger and acquisition research focuses on this disparity and considers whether they create or destroy value for stakeholders. In this thesis, I examine the value generated to shareholders by US acquisitions and mergers announced between 2005 and 2009. Utilizing the event study methodology, I evaluate cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) for acquiring firms to analyze the wealth effects of merger and acquisition announcements. CAR is a …
Made In America: The Affects Cognitive Load Consumer Ethnocentrism And Country Of Origin Have On Consumer Purchasing Decisions, Hannah Halstrom
Made In America: The Affects Cognitive Load Consumer Ethnocentrism And Country Of Origin Have On Consumer Purchasing Decisions, Hannah Halstrom
Honors Theses
Previous research suggests that cognitive load affects decision-making tasks. As well, a consumer varies his or her purchasing decisions based off of his or her personal level of Consumer Ethnocentrism (CE) and the Country of Origin (COO) of the product or brand. Eighty individuals participated in the study. Some participants were put under cognitive load by having remembering an 8 digit number span. All subjects were randomly exposed to one of two product sets, where COO was manipulated. Each product set consisted of 5 advertisements followed by a series of 4 questions. These questions regarded their willingness to purchase the …
