Mine Action With A Human Face: A Human Security Doctrine For Mine Action, Matthew Bolton
Mine Action With A Human Face: A Human Security Doctrine For Mine Action, Matthew Bolton
Global CWD Repository
Mine action needs to rediscover its ‘human face',1 to remember, as UNMAS has said, that “It is not so much about mines as it is about people….”2 Empirical research in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Sudan show that mine action is in danger of becoming distracted by commercial and strategic priorities. This is especially true since the advent of the ‘War on Terror' and the continuing trend of consolidating the commercial mine action sector into the private security sector. Ten years ago a group of NGOs critical of the donor and commercial interests tried to develop a framework to guide mine action. …

Social And Commercial Sustainability Of Regional Web-Based Communities, A. Connery, Helen M. Hasan
Helen Hasan
New information and communications technologies have disrupted many traditional forms of community but enabled the emergence of new ones. This paper examines pertinent characteristics of communities, before describing three case studies of commercially operated web-based communities. The research demonstrates the social and commercial value of the concept of community.

Building And Maintaining Sustainable Organizations, Dilip Mirchandani, John Ikerd
Organization Management Journal
As our planet’s resources and carrying capacity have become exponentially strained in the last century of vast industrialism, it will be imperative for the corporations that currently determine the flow of global economic resources to advance into a position of sustainable post-industrial prosperity. It is essential that firms create and maintain synergistic relations with the biosphere, key stakeholders, and the global community. There have been many great strides in the last decade to expand environmental and social considerations in business and a path toward a sustainable future has been initiated. Today the corporation must go beyond pollution prevention and product …
The Development Of Corporate Responsibility/ Corporate Citizenship, Sandra Waddock
The Development Of Corporate Responsibility/ Corporate Citizenship, Sandra Waddock
Organization Management Journal
This paper outlines the emergence of corporate responsibility/corporatecitizenship as part of corporate practice. The paper first defines the terms, then briefly focuses on the history of corporate citizenship and its evolution over time, highlighting the current popularity of the term both in academic and practice-based work. It turns next to an assessment of the current pressures and dynamics facing major corporations, highlighting the internalization of corporate responsibility practices into companies’’ business models, and a growing infrastructure that involves new standards and principles, the social investment movement, NGO pressures, multi-sector collaborations particularly around so-called bottom-of the pyramid strategies, internal and external …
Eco-Palms: Providing A Sustainable Commercial Alternative To Palms For Palm Sunday., Deidre Marine Peroff
Eco-Palms: Providing A Sustainable Commercial Alternative To Palms For Palm Sunday., Deidre Marine Peroff
Western Division, Canadian Association of Geographers
There is a widespread view that commercialization of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in the tropical forests of Mesoamerica is both economically and environmentally sustainable in rural communities. Despite this belief, research shows that the harvesting and commercialization of NTFPs alone do not necessarily alleviate poverty or maintain biodiversity within rainforests. This paper describes the eco-palm program, a program which serves to sustainably harvest and export Chamaedorea palm fronds from Southern Mexico and Northern Guatemala. The eco-palm program works with churches in the United States to charge a five cent premium on palm fronds that are imported from Mexico and Guatemala …
Redefining Quaker Simplicity: The Friends Committee On National Legislation Building, 2005, Carl Abbott, Margery Post Abbott
Redefining Quaker Simplicity: The Friends Committee On National Legislation Building, 2005, Carl Abbott, Margery Post Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 2005, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the major Quaker peace and justice lobbying organization in the United States, completed a substantial remodeling and expansion of its office building on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The building exemplifies a self-conscious effort to express Quaker values of simplicity and stewardship in architectural choices. Examining the changing meanings of simplicity as expressed in Quaker meeting houses, this article argues that contemporary Friends in the United States have given nontraditional meanings to the concept and now associate simplicity with environmental stewardship in personal and community life. For example, the use of natural …

Social Innovation, Sustainable Futures And Commercial Concerns: People, Profits And Social Well-Being, Patrick M. Dawson, L. Daniel
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This paper draws attention to the growing interest in social innovations as they seek to improve the well being of people, communities and society. Social innovations are recognised as the development of new concepts, strategies and tools that support individuals and groups to achieve improved well-being. We examine here the growing interest in social innovation before turning our attention to more theoretical and conceptual concerns. We examine the link between the social and technical dimensions of innovation and identify how the scope of our definition is important in delineating our phenomena of interest. Some of the earlier academic work on …
International Technology Transfer For Climate Policy, David Popp
International Technology Transfer For Climate Policy, David Popp
Center for Policy Research
While the developed world is starting to limit emissions of greenhouse gases, emissions from the developing world are increasing as a result of economic growth. Reducing these emissions while still enabling developing countries to grow requires the use of new technologies. In most cases, these technologies are first created in high-income countries. Thus, the challenge for climate policy is to encourage the transfer of these climate-friendly technologies to the developing world. This policy brief reviews the economic literature on environmental technology transfer. It then discusses the implications of this literature for climate policy, focusing on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) …

Toward A New Social Contract: A Tripartite Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Social Sustainability At Three Land-Grant Universities, Lyndsay Josephine Agans
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increasingly, colleges and universities in the United States are adapting toward a model of behavior that incorporates issues of sustainability. This adaptation in universities and in society has implications on the organizational and nation-state level, the very core of which may serve to reshape the social contract between the two. In addition to supplying a strong counter-hegemonic argument that alters the competitive economic agenda-setting paradigm, this study serves as a tripartite comparative case study analysis of university adaptation toward social sustainability. By employing a social capital lens to understanding social sustainability in higher education, this study seeks to examine the …

Fostering Sustainability In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Transformative Leadership And Change Strategies, Kim H. Mcnamara
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
As evidence of the earth’s limited capacity to sustain human life mounts, institutions of higher education are being looked to for leadership in the effort to educate students about environmental concerns and support the development of sustainable innovations. Colleges and universities are responding to this call for leadership by starting and/or expanding environmental research programs, integrating sustainability issues throughout the curriculum, adopting sustainable operations, and building green facilities. Reflecting upon the sustainability efforts of these institutions, this research study explores the following questions: What factors are essential for initiating and leading a successful change effort to foster sustainability in higher …
