Learning From Land Use Reforms: Housing Outcomes And Regulatory Change, Noah Kazis
Learning From Land Use Reforms: Housing Outcomes And Regulatory Change, Noah Kazis
Law & Economics Working Papers
This essay serves as the introduction for an edited, interdisciplinary symposium of articles studying recent land use reforms at the state and local level. These papers provide important descriptive analyses of a range of policy interventions, using quantitative and qualitative methods to provide new empirical insights into zoning reform strategies.
After situating and summarizing the collected articles, the Introduction draws out shared themes. For example, these essays demonstrate the efficacy of recent reforms, not only at facilitating housing production but at doing so in especially difficult contexts (like when producing affordable housing and redeveloping single-family neighborhoods). They point to the …
The Sunnyside Movement Towards Mental Health Prevention And Resiliency, Eva Williams
The Sunnyside Movement Towards Mental Health Prevention And Resiliency, Eva Williams
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Goal Statement: To increase Mental Health awareness and resources among adults with untreated mental disorders in the Sunnyside community (Understanding Houston, 2023).
Significant Findings: 18,6004 residents reside in Sunnyside. Nearly half (48%) were between 20 and 64 years of age, 18% were 65 or older, and many out of this group have untreated mental disorders or have been hospitalized for mental health symptoms (Sunnyside Survey Shows Neighborhood's Social Fabric Is Strong, 2019). These findings include the LGBTQ community, which accounts for about 40% of people who reported experiencing mental illness in the last year (Kolanek, 2020). The target problem in …

Hustle In H-Town: Hip Hop Entrepreneurialism In Houston, Brittany L. Long
Hustle In H-Town: Hip Hop Entrepreneurialism In Houston, Brittany L. Long
Journal of Hip Hop Studies
Imagine a sprawling, overheated American megalopolis that epitomizes diversity and segregation in one of the world’s youngest countries. Despite Houston’s history of structural racism and segregation, Houston Hip Hop entrepreneurs built communities and created storied businesses that culminate in a sense of local pride and Hip Hop identity that has not been replicated in the same manner in any other city. An examination of thought-provoking existing scholarship about the Hip Hop South and Hip Hop in Houston, as well as an examination of existing and collected primary sources (interviews) allow me to demonstrate two things: Hip Hop entrepreneurialism is a …

Urban Traffic Simulation: Network And Demand Representation Impacts On Congestion Metrics, Aaron Faltesek, Balasubramaniam Dakshinamoorthi, Sreeni Prabhala, Akbar Thobani, Anu Kuncheria, Jane Macfarlane
Urban Traffic Simulation: Network And Demand Representation Impacts On Congestion Metrics, Aaron Faltesek, Balasubramaniam Dakshinamoorthi, Sreeni Prabhala, Akbar Thobani, Anu Kuncheria, Jane Macfarlane
SMU Data Science Review
Traffic simulations are often used by city planners as a basis for predicting the impact of policies, plans, and operations. The complexities underpinning traffic simulations are often not described in detail yet can significantly impact the simulation outcome. Conflating underlying data for simulations is complex and hinders the interest in this type of exploration. This paper aims to elucidate critical features of traffic simulations that drive the generated metrics of the modeled urban environment. Specifically, this paper examines differences in two road graph networks for the metropolitan region of Houston, TX: a reduced network composed of 45,675 road links and …

Queering Disasters: Embodied Crises In Post-Harvey Houston, Thomas T. Tran
Queering Disasters: Embodied Crises In Post-Harvey Houston, Thomas T. Tran
Masters Theses
This project addresses how neoliberal expansion complicates disaster recovery for queer communities in an urban context looking specifically at how disasters, disease, and marginalization operate as interlocking systems of oppression for queer people in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in 2017. This research draws upon anthropological studies of disasters, urban studies, critical medical anthropology, and queer theory to employ a queer political ecology that combines understandings of disasters and diseases as socio-political and ecological phenomena with queerness as a set of culturally constructed vulnerabilities that carry embodied effects. Starting from the understanding that disasters more heavily impact groups that already …

It’S Not All Partisan Politics: The Interaction Between Religion And Extreme Weather Events In Shaping Attitudes Toward Anthropogenic Climate Change In The Greater Houston Metropolitan Area, Gary J. Fitzsimmons
It’S Not All Partisan Politics: The Interaction Between Religion And Extreme Weather Events In Shaping Attitudes Toward Anthropogenic Climate Change In The Greater Houston Metropolitan Area, Gary J. Fitzsimmons
Sociology & Anthropology Theses
This study investigates the effect that Pope Francis’ 2015 Encyclical Laudato Si had on Catholic beliefs about climate change using a Houston area case study, and presents a model for how religious affiliation and religious worldview impacts those beliefs. I tested three variables gauging respondent views on climate change included in the Rice | Kinder annual survey of Houston area residents for 2015, 2016 and 2018. My results show that Catholicism was not a factor in pro-climate belief formation in 2015, but was in 2018. The data also suggest that Catholics may have increased their risk perceptions of climate change …

Social Media Flooded With Rescue Requests During Hurricane Harvey, Alison Greenhalgh
Social Media Flooded With Rescue Requests During Hurricane Harvey, Alison Greenhalgh
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Professional Projects
When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, social media was used in a new way during a natural disaster. Emergency phone lines were jammed, and people were in desperate need of rescuing. These people turned to social media, such as Facebook, to ask for help. At the same time, civilian rescuers turned to social media to find locations of people in need of rescuing. News articles published stories about the desperate cries for help on social media; however, these articles left some questions unanswered. How exactly did social media connect rescuers and victims, and how could it be more efficient? How did …
