From Gis To Uavs: Emerging Opportunities For Drone Support Services In Academic Libraries, Jessica Davila Greene, Warren Roberts
Library Staff Publications and Research
In 2015, The Claremont Colleges Library purchased a drone for its Emerging Technology Loan program. At the time, Federal Aviation Administration regulations were still in their infancy in regards to drone use in public and for teaching and research –lending wasn’t even a consideration. After three years of waiting for the regulations to catch up with the demand, The Claremont Colleges Library GIS Specialist was able to pilot a drone lending program that circulates both the drone and the GIS Specialist for course integration. More Than A Pretty Interface: The Louisiana Digital Library As A Data Hub, Sl Ziegler
Faculty Publications
The Louisiana Digital Library (LDL) is an online platform for libraries, museums, archives, and historical organizations across the state. The books, manuscripts, oral histories, maps, and photographs held in the LDL showcase the cultural resources of Louisiana. The interface enables users to discover materials through search and browse, and to view and interact with these materials. The metadata about these items is also a great asset. When explored in their entirety, the data held in the LDL is as valuable as the digital facsimiles. The LDL may be conceptualized as a data hub, a place to gather and share the …

Community Engaged Digital Initiatives: Building Academic Library Services And Infrastructure With Faculty And Community Collaborators, Shannon Lucky, Craig Harkema
Digital Initiatives Symposium
Community collaborations have become key drivers for the development of our library’s digital initiatives (DI) program. While collaborative partnerships can complicate the process of getting DI work completed, they can also positively contribute to decision making around digitization projects, metadata use, user interface (UI) design, and infrastructure development. This presentation outlines possibilities for iteratively developing digital infrastructure and service offerings to support community engaged research and discusses key issues to consider when developing such a program. We will describe how we have adapted DI systems to support a range of projects from photography collections to oral histories, to locally created …

A Modest Proposal For Scholarly Publishing: 21st Century Ideas For A 19th Century System, Shawn Martin
A Modest Proposal For Scholarly Publishing: 21st Century Ideas For A 19th Century System, Shawn Martin
Shawn Martin
In 1729 Jonathan Swift wrote A Modest Proposal which proposed (albeit sarcastically) that Irish peasants could solve their economic problems by selling their children to the rich. The point Swift was making, with an admittedly morbid sense of humor, was that Ireland was facing serious problems and that transformational change was needed. Similarly, the scholarly publishing and communication system is also in need of such changes in order to continue. To facilitate this change, it is important to re-frame how we think about scholarly publishing. Disseminating scholarship is no longer a matter of simply publishing work in a print monograph …
Open Access And Digital Libraries: A Case Study Of The Text Creation Partnership, Shawn Martin
Open Access And Digital Libraries: A Case Study Of The Text Creation Partnership, Shawn Martin
Shawn Martin
Many people operate under the assumption that Open/Closed access is a binary proposition. Either the material is available to everyone on the web or it is closed to a limited number of subscribers. The reality, however, is much more complicated. What is the use of a digital library, no matter how open, if it is unable to sustain and maintain itself over time? What is the point of a well funded collection that is closed to the people who need it most? There are in fact many models for maintaining both open and closed access digital libraries. Though the conversation …
